šš®š¦š¦šš«š²: John Winchester has never forgiven himself for raising his sons in the life, and he sure as shit wonāt be dragging anyone else along for the ride. That is, until one of the students in his boxing class is targeted by the Djinn heās hunting.
ššš¢š«š¢š§š : John Winchester x F! Reader
ššš«š§š¢š§š š¬: 18+, explicit language, slow burn, yearning, age gap, sexually suggestive content, no real smut in this one but it's coming I assure you, discussion of death / dead bodies, dead dove: do not eat.
no mention of Y/N Ā· present tense Ā· mix of second person & third person limited POV
ššØš«š ššØš®š§š: 2.5k
šš®šš”šØš«'š¬ ššØšš: This is part one of my first ever chaptered work! Important context: John is still alive, kicking, and annoying the shit out of his sons. Cass & Bobby are around too. John & the boys hunt and live life mostly separately with occasional visits, and the obligatory family reunions whenever shit really hits the fan.
This series will be like Daddy issues on crack. You have been warned.
(That said, there will be no use of the word āDaddyā in a sexual context in my writing ā I would never yuck someone elseās yum, but I still call my own father Daddy so I simply ā¹āā cannot ā¹āā. I assure you it's in a Beth/John Dutton type of way, not an Oldboy way !!)

John Winchester is an asshole composed of fifty percent self-loathing and fifty percent regret. Heās also an exceptionally good boxing coach.
Youād decided all that within the first fifteen minutes of this class. The man is rude as fuck. Heās clearly got issues, but heās also the best sparring partner youāve ever had.
A face-full of leather quickly reminds you that despite your mind wandering, you are still in class. You swat Johnās gloved hand away.
āYou know princess, maybe youād be better suited to pilates or yoga?ā
You retaliate with a body shot packing far more force than that comment called for. It gives you a rush you werenāt expecting.
John winces at the contact, then tosses you a cheeky wink.
āAttagirl.ā
Detecting an ounce of pride in his voice, you can practically hear your Daddy issues rattling the sides of their cage inside you.Ā
You break eye contact, denying yourself the satisfaction of seeing it in his eyes too.
John takes a small step back, noting the conflicted expression on your face. Youāve obviously weirded him out ā and in a single session too, way to go.
He hovers near you for a beat, silently studying you, then strides off launching his gloves across the room in the process. The rest of the group all gather around him in the center. You linger on the edge.
āAlright, good work tonight everyone. No individual sessions this week ācause Iāve gotta head out of town for a job, so Iāll see you all next Monday.ā
You had planned to stick around for some tedious small talk after, but the coffee truck out front is a lot more tempting right now, so you head out.
In a moment of weakness as you pass through the doorway, you quickly scan the room to catch a brief parting glimpse of John. Heās already left ā which is definitely for the best. Thereās a reason your friends keep begging you to date people that are not twenty years your senior. No matter how hot and grumpy they are.
---
John paces back and forth in the alley, pushing the image of his new student to the back of his mind. That is a problem for another day.Ā
As though he can sense his father about to make yet another terrible decision from miles away, Johnās phone rings. Deanās contact card lights up the screen.
He releases a deflated huff, hitting accept.
āDad? Listen weāve taken care of the rugaru in Fair Oaks so we donāt need yāā
John rubs his temple, his tone stern.
āI told you to wait.ā
āI know that. But people were getting hurt and weāve taken out plenty before.ā
Failing to suppress his frustration, John barks down the line.
āI know that, son. But this one was moreāā
A beat.
āācomplicated than that.ā
The muffled sounds of Sam putting in his two cents in the background snaps John out of his rage. He sighs.
āNo, you know what Dean, youāre right Iām sorry. As long as you boys are okay.ā
Thereās a brief, uncomfortable silence on the other line.
āWeāre fine, Dad. Thatās not why I called anyway. Sam got an alert on his phone about some missing folks in this town- uh, Passing Falls, near Washington. Thatās where youāre at, right?ā
John scans the space around him, immediately on edge. He takes a mental note of the people around him, stilling for a moment when he finds a familiar face waiting in line at the coffee truck.
āUh-huh.ā
āYou want us to meet you there? Weāre about a day out.ā
John tears his eyes away from her and forces himself to look at the ground.ā
āNo. Iāve got it.ā
āAre you sure? Sam and I thought could stay for a couple days after andāā
John snaps. āI said no.ā
John wishes he could take it back the moment the words leave his lips. Dean mumbles some generic farewell in response and swiftly hangs up. John tosses his head back and rolls his eyes at himself. Gold star parenting, as always.
Thatās another problem for another day, because before he even realizes heās moving, Johnās boots are heading straight toward the coffee truck.
--- Ā
Downtownsās usual cocktail of gasoline and coffee in the air soothes you as you take in the view of the courtyard.
Some local kids sit huddled under a tree around a Nintendo DS, vibrating with excitement about whatever game theyāre playing. An elderly couple shares a croissant on the bench.Ā
Is this place cute? Sure, but itās all a little too Hallmark for you, so you tune it out.
Walking up to the coffee truck, youāre greeted by the same guy thatās served you every day this week. His nameās Carl or Chris or something like that.
āHey pretty girl, what can I getcha today?ā
You donāt mind the compliment, but this guyās not your type, so you smile sweetly and brush it off.
āJust an oat flat white please, Carl.ā
āSure thing. Itās Cole, by the way.ā
Your mouth opens to issue a half-assed apology, but youāre interrupted by the sound of a voice you recognise in the distance.
Coleās pathetic puppy dog eyes bore into you as you find yourself entirely focused on Johnās harsh tone coming from the alley.
āUh, hereās that oat flat white.ā
You snap out of it, taking the cup.
āSorry Cole, long day.āĀ
You pretend you donāt see his phone number written on it.Ā
Taking a sip of the nectar of the gods, you notice a shadow appear on the asphalt, swallowing your own.
āOf course youāre an oat milk person.ā
The deep, gravel in Johnās voice makes you want to melt, but you push that feeling down as deep as you can.
You spin around, silently enjoying the fact you hair whips him in the face a little. You raise a brow at him.
āGotta make sure thereās enough half fat, decaf, vanilla shit left for you.ā
John huffs out a laugh.
āIāll get the iced banana frappe.ā
Cole stares blankly at you both. His voice shakes when he addresses John.
āAre youā did you really want that?ā
John glares at the poor kid, intimidating him further.
āNo. Coffee, black. Thanksā
While Cole makes Johnās drink with trembling hands, you decide to interrogate him about the call, pointing at his phone.
His posture straightens instantly, shoulders tense.
āUh, yeah. Just my sons.ā
You nod slowly.
āWanna talk about it?ā
John barks out a laugh.
āSweetheart, that is one can of worms you donāt wanna open. Believe me.ā
Noted. John makes toward a nearby bench. You arenāt sure whether to follow him or not so you linger for a second, which Cole unfortunately reads entirely the wrong way.
Rolling up his sleeves and attempting to work up the nerve, he clears his throat a few times. You brace for discomfort.
āHey, listen, I was wondering if youād maybe wanna catch the game together this weekend?ā
Desperate for an out, your eyes dart around the truck looking for anything to help you change the subject. They land on his tribal tattoos.
āUh-huh, maybe some other time. Cool ink, by the way.ā
Awkward as hell, you mumble some shit about wanting tattoos, slowly backing away until you feel the wood of the picnic bench pressing against the back of your thigh.Ā
Cole diverts his attention to his next customer, ego sufficiently bruised.
Johnās smug grin pisses you off as you sit down.
āYou are cold as hell. That boy is down bad for you, you couldāve at least softened the blow a bit.ā
You pout, refusing to give him the satisfaction. He continues the interrogation.
āAlright, so why boxing? You seem to enjoy smacking the shit out of people. You got some deep-seated issues I should be concerned about?ā
Tilting your head to the side, you deflect the question.
āHave you?ā
John groans, picking up a white napkin and waving it in surrender.
You decide to throw him a bone.
āTruth is, I donāt really have an answer for that. Guess I just wanted to feel a bit tougher?ā
āYou seem plenty tough to me.ā
---
A few weeks later, getting coffee together after class has accidentally become a regular thing.Ā
Occasionally, John will rock up with a gnarly bruise or a fat lip. Youāve decided itās best not to ask since that time he sarcastically told you he got thrown against a tree by a vampire.
Despite the fact youāre spending more time together than you really should be, you still know a grand total of fucking nothing about John Winchester, so today youāve opted for a different approach. āBreak breadā and all that.
You dump the offering down in front of John with minimal confidence.
āWhat the fuck is that?ā
You roll your eyes dramatically.
āItās a cinnamon bun, old man.ā
John frowns.
āYou cut that āold manā shit out right now.ā
Taking a sip of coffee, you stare him down.
āCome on, just try it. A man canāt live off hard liquor and burgers alone.ā
He huffs out a laugh.
āSweetheart, Iāve got a son on the road and a friend in South Dakota that would beg to differ.ā
Today feels like a good day to poke the bear.
āHmm maybe you should introduce me? Is your son hot?ā you tease.
No response, heās stoic as ever. You go in for the kill.
āOr even better, your friend?ā
That gets his attention.
āEven better?ā
You stare him down, expecting him to clam up and get all awkward. Instead, he catches you completely off-guard.
āOne of my individual session slots has just opened up. If youāre interested?ā
Youāre not sure if youāre meant to read into that or not.
His gaze is firmly fixed on yours. The tension heats your cheeks, the look heās giving you setting your body alight.Ā
āI donāt think thatās a good idea.ā
You practically watch the thought cross his mind in real time. Thereās a hint of an idea there for a moment, then itās back to his signature frown. Always taking life too seriously. Punishing himself for that split second where he allowed himself to picture you on top of him. Head thrown back, mouth open, sweat glistening on your chest.Ā
You wonder if heāll go home and really punish himself for the thought later. Or if heāll indulge the fantasy for a few minutes longer behind closed doors.
He clears his throat, pulling you out of the depths of your mind.
āLook, full disclosure; Iām a widower, I drink too much, I have two sons that donāt like me very much, I practically live out of my truck, and Iām over 20 years older than you.ā
You blink at him, somewhat taken aback by his candor. He continues.
āIām not putting the moves on you. I just thought you might want the extra training, thatās all.ā
The bluntness of it all stings a little, but youāre glad he said it, regardless.Ā
John has practically poured a bucket of ice water over whatever weird vibe there was between you, which is good because it was a recipe for disaster and youāve decided to sort your life out ā which is exactly why you agree to the 1-1 sessions. What could possibly go wrong?
---
In the gym, skin slick with sweat, you pound your fists against the bag.
Johnās eyes track your every move, jaw clenched.
āHarder.ā
You hit the bag again.
āHarder.ā
And again.
āHarder.ā
Again.
āHarder.ā
Youāre now officially sick of hearing the word āharderā, so this time you pummel the ever-loving shit out of the bag until you genuinely wonder if your hands are broken. And holy shit does it feel good.
John moves in closer and you canāt help but inhale the delicious smoky scent of his cologne. He studies the wild look in your eyes.
āFeel better?
You nod, breathless, chest heaving.
āGood.ā
Pulse drumming in your ears, youāre transported back to that first session just the two of you.
Johnās painfully intense gaze fixated on you as you hit the stupid bag. The words he said that youāve found yourself hearing on repeat lately.
āListen to me. Whatever fucked up shit youāve got going on, whatever demons youāre running fromā or to āyou can lay down and cry about it, go bitch about it on the internet, OR you can fight it. Donāt throw in the towel just because youāre scared. Hit harder, feel better.ā
In a turn of events surprising to absolutely nobody, things are getting a little too intense, so you decide to take five.
John heads out the back to make a call while you hit the water cooler.
Spiraling like an idiot, you run through every possible scenario in your head. At least you think you do, until you hear the scream. Youāre suddenly hyper-aware that there are several scenarios you might have overlooked.
Bursting out the fire doors like a bat out of hell, youāre stopped dead in your tracks when you find John crouched over a dead body.
You recoil at the sight of it. Itās not the first dead body youāve seen, but itās definitely the gnarliest.
What was presumably a woman in her 20s full of life is now a pale, bloodless, husk with a permanent expression of sheer terror.
āJesus fucking christ, John. What the hell?ā
His head whips up in your direction, eyes frantic. You keep your eyes on him, desperately trying not to look at the corpse on the ground.
As bad as it sounds, the incessant shrieking from a middle-aged woman nearby offers you a small comfort, because youāre confident the scream you heard came from her and not the body John is currently crouched over. So if he didnāt do this, why is he crouched over the body?
John must have read your mind because within seconds heās upright and heading straight for you. He grabs you by the elbow and steers you away from the crowd.
Once youāre out of sight from the chaos, he leans in close, his forehead practically touching yours.
āIāll tell you everything, I promise. Just not here.ā
You nod frantically, internally scalding yourself for enjoying being this close to a man who could potentially be extremely dangerous.
He pulls a set of keys from his jacket pocket and pushes them into your palm.
āGo to my truck and lock the doors. Do not let anyone in but me. Itās parked in the main lot ā Iāll meet you there as soon as I can.ā
Judging by the severity in his voice, any protest would be fruitless, so you nod in agreement.Ā
John places a hand at the small of your back as you slip away from the scene. Watching your every step until youāre out of sight completely.
You still feel the pressure of his palm against your back hours later. Sure, he could be dangerous, but that doesnāt stop from you sitting in his truck like an idiot, waiting for whatever comes next.
sabriel vs destiel is so funny because dean and cas had a relationship built on insatiable yearning and preemptive grief. their love is so deeply woven into the narrative that the story cannot exist in its absence. archangel gabriel is desperately trying to get into sam's pants for 12 seasons
How to survive the phase of shitty writting? I know i can't skip it in order to grow, but realistically, how to not give up? How to keep going knowing everything i create is worthless for now and i don't even feel i'll ever progress? Iām trying to come back after quite long time of not writing, i was writing fir years before but i hate pretty much all my previous works, but the curent ones iām trying to write in order to come back are qualy bad, iām worried it can never get better.
Write crap.
No really. Buy yourself a notebook or open a doc and label it "Complete Shit." Spend at least five minutes a day forcing yourself to add to it. If you can't do it every day, try doing it three times a week. If you can't do it three times a week, try to schedule it at least once a week. But you gotta make yourself try at least once a week to write something.
This writing doesn't matter. You don't have to fix typos or fiddle with punctuation. You are just going to sit down, write literally anything for five minutes, and go about your day. Try some writing prompts. Describe your mediocre breakfast. Talk about your cat. Write a songfic. You can and will get through this, but you've got to not give up.
Everyone goes through this, and the only way through it is to weather it out. However, if you don't make yourself sit down and write as often as you can, this funk can sink in and keep you from writing for ages.
And if you're still at this point where you can't write anything without hating it, do something else creative. Read books, watch movies, try your hand at art. Do things that keep your brain thinking, because you will be able to reconnect those threads again, but you've got to remove that pressure from yourself to be good. You simply have to be, and keep going, and you will find joy in your writing again.
I would add to this-- avoid labeling as "complete shit."
Words have power and connotations.
If we're already in the mindset our words are bad, don't fuel the fire. Every time you pick up that notebook and it says "shit" or you touch your "trash draft" that is the frame of reference you are setting for yourself.
Some people can and will refer to it as those things, because that is what they need to move forward. Permission to call it something less than so they can move forward knowing this is only the first iteration.
But (imo) if you're struggling to pick up writing because "your words are bad. " Don't fuel that fire. Label the notebook words. Or something that works for you, (we use different tools for different jobs. What do you need it to be)
There will be bad words sure, but good words too.
Spellbinding sentences by barbra Baig may also be worth checking out (request it from your local library! Get it through libby!). There is a lot of great advice in that book with writing intentionally, writing in a notebook daily, and building skills to improve writing
(Love the blog btw just adding two cents as someone who has a similar struggle)
Fair point! My hope is to try to encourage you to write something with no pressure attached to it at all, but if labelling it negatively makes you think of it like that, for sure call it something else.
(Also no dig at songfics either, they're just the lowest pressure fanfic type I could think of.)

Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy being like, "I am 100% committed to respecting your 'no', but I heard you wouldn't promise my aunt not to marry me so I had to come and check just one (1) more time."
It really speaks to how seriously Darcy took Lizzie's "fuck you no."
He has said NOTHING to her. Avoided her. Done everything he can to respect that fuck no to the highest level.
But then he hears Lizzie read his socially-above-her aunt for fucking filth on the idea she would listen to him?
"She has never been rude in company. She was rude to me because I was rude to her. If she is so vehemently angry at my aunt to tell her to stuff it, maybe she will read an explanation of my actions AND my sincere apologies."
And Lizzie, who took the word of Mr. Darcy's servants that he was a kind man went, "Um, I GUESS I'll read it." and then went, "YOU JUST TOLD ME SOCIALLY RUINABLE INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BABY SISTER, AND I AM A GOOD PERSON, AND OH SHIT I THINK I LOVE YOU."
And this is all BEFORE he gets Wickham to marry Lydia and swears secrecy of his involvement so Lizzie won't think she owes him anything.
