Birthmarks

Canon doesn't state that zabrak have natural markings, but a) there really should be a plausible in-universe reason as to why tattoos became an overwhelmingly defining trait for an entire species; b) camouflage markings are very advantageous for survival, and given their harsh homeworld and lifestyle as hunters, it would absolutely make sense for such markings to have evolved among zabrak; and c) l will always give sci-fi/fantasy species more "inhuman" traits, while insisting that they are full and complex people, whenever I get the chance.

Zabrak birthmarks are natural stripes, spots, and/or blotches of darker melanated skin. In human terms, they resemble cafe-au-lait spots, with symmetrical full-body coverage like vitiligo. In function, they're similar to the temporary markings of lion/cougar cubs, deer, tapir, etc - they evolved to help conceal young zabrak from larger predators while their parents hunted, and enable other zabrak to easily identify them. The patterns are genetically determined; each specific design is unique, but general patterns are similar within families.

At the beginning of puberty, hormonal changes trigger the skin cells to stop producing extra melanin, and the birthmarks fade. Most zabrak have unmarked skin by 12-13, and get their first tattoos around age 13 to mark their transition into adolescence. However, there are some whose birthmarks never fade - in which case they either tattoo around their birthmarks later, or never get tattoos, and may struggle socially due to being perceived as childlike.

Tattoos

Zabrak tattoos - their chosen marks - are varied in appearance, but share a significant cultural and spiritual basis. A child doesn't choose their birthmarks, or much else in their early life - but as their abilities develop, they learn that what they do matters. When their birthmarks have faded, they are ready to make a choice that represents their commitment to following their dreams and those of their family, and will affect how they are seen forever. Some choose not to receive tattoos, and bear the judgment that follows; some choose designs that reject their family ties, or ones their parents view as outlandish - but if their elders believe they are serious, they are bound to support the decision regardless. What matters most is the act of will itself, the sign that the youth is no longer a child.

When a young zabrak is ready and willing to prove themself, the elder who will administer the tattoos meets with them and their family to evaluate their readiness, and ensure the design has been drawn out or at least approved by the youth in question. The tattoos are traditionally done by hand, with plant resin- and charcoal-based ink, a mallet and chisel or comb of needles, and no numbing for pain. Scarification is commonly performed, leaving raised or grooved areas. The process itself is viewed as both a necessary test and a means to strengthen a zabrak's spirit, strength and self-control. If there's any doubt that the youth understands and wants to go through with it, the ceremony is put on hold until they figure it out.

The face is always the first area tattooed. Facial markings usually include one or more symbols representing clan ancestry (derived from the inherited birthmark patterns), often with stylization and surrounding designs that have significant personal meaning. Other areas of the body may be tattooed later, to commemorate various events and reflect the individual's evolving sense of self; many zabrak reserve the space over their hearts for marks symbolizing their life-partners.

Philosophy

The concept of an individual's spirit as their will and sense of self, distinct yet intertwined with the will of their community, is central to most forms of zabrak spirituality, but its expression varies across the galaxy. On Iridonia, clan status is central to political success, and there may be intense pressure to get tattoos that reflect well on one's family. Across other Republic worlds and the wider galaxy, many zabrak experiment with more personal designs, and may forego the traditional ceremony for modern, faster and less stressful methods. Meanwhile, in the Jedi Order, community harmony has a much larger focus; elder zabrak Jedi act as spiritual mentors for padawans, ensuring that the desire and reasoning behind their tattoos is in alignment with that of the Order before they proceed. The ceremony is adapted to Jedi spirituality, using the pain as a meditative exercise to let go of pride and selfishness and draw closer to the Light Side.

In the time of the Old Republic, free zabrak within the Sith Empire have their own traditions, influenced by their isolation and contact with the Sith; more of the skin is tattooed, with multiple passes and heavier ink, resulting in a much darker hue and more intense pain during the process. To zabrak Sith, this is a heightened opportunity for connection to the Dark Side of the Force. The Nightbrothers - descendants of Imperial zabrak, rattataki, and humans who were stranded on Dathomir - later carry out a similar isolated version within their own clans. Zabrak who are enslaved are often regarded as spiritually lost, unable to exercise their own will, but many still tattoo themselves to reclaim some independence and sense of self, even at risk of punishment. That is, after all, the most widely appealing and enduring idea behind the practice - a permanent reminder and display of one's inner strength and reasons for living, and intention to win the struggle of life.
