do you live in seattle (the american city)?
yes
no
please reblog to get this poll out of my bubble, i want reach
so ive been meaning to do this poll for a while because my hypothesis is that seattle is the most Tumblr city, likely in the entire world. tumblr has a huge american majority userbase obviously, but just for comparison going forward, only 0.22% of the american population lives in seattle. as of this reblog, this poll is showing 4% of respondents are seattleites. given, this isnt scientific at all, because my blog just has a lot of seattle connections and seattle followers, but it's still an impressive bias
honestly I think I lost a lot of faith in humanity when hogwarts legacy happened. thousands of people heard "jkr is transphobic" and didn't think that was enough reason to not buy a mediocre videogame and it became a runaway success. it was such a basic show of decency and it was too much. return the shopping cart ass dilemma. I'm a misanthrope now
That was really disturbing, and also extremely confusing to me. I genuinly started to question if many people just don't know anything about the world and the context in which the media they consume is made.
"Rowlings transphobia is extremely well known" I always thought, because HOW THE FUCK COULD YOU MISS IT?? And yet I have met multiple people that mentioned playing the game. And they didn't even admit to transphobia, or tried to vaguely gesture towards some misunderstood death of the author concept, or defended JKR, they just mentioned the game like it was the most normal thing to do.
the amount of people who also KNEW explicity that jkr is a transphobe and chose to just, like, not care, and play that game anyway, is astounding. i lost friends i thought were good friends because they were chill just ignoring her blatant transphobia, and i couldnt be around them anymore

David Cleary!
i'm in Ireland and the search for that bastards name is still blocked and hidden... the legnths the british go to defend and protect their instruments of colonialism and violence is beyond belief. no justice for the victims and yet every measure taken to protect David James Cleary and his fellow murderers.
Never a better time for the Streisand Effect than when it's a government covering up acts of brutality and evil.
if you complain about the Chinese government covering up Tianamen Square, then complain about this, too.

it's actually so crazy how much the simpsons would fucking suck if it didn't have any of the simpsons characters. just a bunch of shots of empty houses and streets for half an hour while nothing happens. that would be so badddd lol
yeah that tends to happen when you remove characters from media. without characters its all just background. i guess movies set in scenic locations would still land as kinda nature docs but even then
it only happens with the simpsons
this same criticism could be applied to nearly any media ever.
it's just the simpsons. are you a troll?
Dragon's right, if you remove all the Simpsons characters from Death Note it hardly changes anything

This image is insane. The 3 weed-smoking girlfriends photo if it was an awesome lesbian polycule instead.
Anti-city people are just plain fascinating to me
I used to live 5 min walk from a small neighborhood shopping place that had a supermarket, a 7-Eleven, three clinics, a dentist, a bakery, a stationery shop, an optometrist, a hairdresser/nail tech salon, a barber's (they're next to each other), three food courts/eating houses, a KFC, three ATMs, a pet shop and a childcare centre. (I'm sure I'm missing something but never mind.)
Within a 10-15min walk, I could get to 2 different larger malls that had facilities such as a library and connects directly to the subway station, a light rail station and a bus interchange.
I could literally wake up at 2a.m. and walk to the 7-Eleven to get a slushie and a sandwich if I wanted. That was how convenient it was. I didn't need to spend hours commuting to and from the doctor's if I didn't feel well enough for work.
Grocery shopping is a part of many people's daily routine. We go to the market or supermarket on the same day we plan to cook.
And this is common here. We're a small city state, true, so the closeness of everything is kinda forced on us, but even so, neighborhoods are planned in such a way that everyone can easily access a variety of goods and services without too much hassle. And we do use little carts! They're useful and practical things!
I do want a bit of earth to grow plants in, but I grew up a d live in a city and I love how convenient everything is. Walkable neighborhoods are blessings for everyone.

Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”
Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.
#'this is present in the text' is often a good first step #but those second and third ones (naming it; describing its function) are vital (via @elucubrare)

the Tumblr "mechsploitation" rant
I have said versions of all this before, but not On Tumblr; which is a problem inasmuch as this is a complaint about the parochial insularity of the Tumblr mechsploitation scene. So, futile as it may be, here it is, theoretically visible at the source of the issue: the terrible shortcoming I see in the Tumblr mechploitation scene is that, for the most part, actually writing, reading, or engaging with mechsploitation only happens in other places — what happens on Tumblr is "jacking off about puppygirls."
Everyone's allowed to jack off about puppygirls, of course, should they so wish, but this shouldn't be mistaken for things it isn't, such as e.g. "reading things" or "understanding a genre" or "knowing what the fuck you're talking about."
Mechsploitation is often mistaken for a subgenre of science fiction, from which Tumblr "fans" often talk about sanitising the horrifying elements. This is a fundamental media literacy error: mechsploitation is a subgenre of horror. You cannot sanitise the horror out of horror; furthermore, the horror in mechsploitation is explicitly fascism. The horror is the horror of fascism breaking its sincere opponents — if not into genuine agreement, then at least into a drugs-and-torture-obtained simulacrum of enthusiastic participation in fascist violence.
Whenever someone says "haha what if mechsplo but nicies to puppy :)" they are saying: it's icky that this horror genre is horror. The breaking people, the bad ends, the intentional feelbad, any of the kinks too edgy for Me Specifically — all that can go, superfluous. Let's take out the horror and breaking and drugs-and-torture and simulacrum and just have the enthusiastic participation, because that's nicies! Puppygirl's nice white affluent middle-class ass Simply signed up to kill the subaltern rebels in the imperial military when a recruiter came round to her school. Uncle Sam says: Off the leash, uwu-rah! :)
And if that criticism is too pointed for your taste, consider: mechsploitation without the things that make it mechsploitation probably isn't "reverse mechsplo" or "mechsplo but". It's probably just "milSF with mechs in," something that substantially pre-dates mechsploitation and has estabished genre language for talking about it. Neither it nor mechsplo is served by trying to define the negative space of Everything That's Not Mechsploitation in terms of mechsploitation; the attempt makes you look, at best, like you should Read Another Fucking Book.
At worst, of course, you look like you're acting in bad faith to gentrify a microgenre written by and for trans women about their specific experiences under contemporary fascism.
