i love when characters who aren't human and are total outsiders to humanity and by all means do not need to align themselves with human concepts of gender and have every choice in the world, still actively decide to be women
it's that "calling people bro vs. calling people girl" thing. the first is unconscious, going along with societal views that assume maleness is the universal norm, but calling people girl is an active choice to reject that assumption, it's a choice someone has thought about. it's like that, the author likely made an active choice to make these characters women when making them men would've more than likely been a default, unconscious autopilot decision.
