self-guided ocd exposure therapy can be as simple as resisting the urge to check if your door is locked more than once and sitting with the discomfort until it passes without engaging in any reassurance rituals.

idk man I'm thinking a lot about the discourse being reported in this post and my own post about crushes, which has garnered a lot of responses like this one
and I don't know exactly what to do with this yet but I'm fascinated, in a really upsetting way, by the way some of these people seem to conceptualize romantic and/or sexual attraction as an act of violation that no one should do to people they like and care about. if nothing else it raises some really compelling questions about what they think actually goes on between people who have sex and/or romantic bonds with each other if that's not supposed to be something that happens between friends.

the trick about getting invested and confident in ur own concepts is to surround urself with other likeminded artists who are down to earth. i know nowadays especially people think "indie" and they think undertale or glitch pilots and they have paved the way for great things but i mean like. engage with your friends comics theyve been posting to an audience of 20-30 people. The people who are genuinely at your level with you. Who are working on their projects on the side because they still have a full time job to attend to. who go on long hiatuses because theyre in college and are crunching for tests at the moment.
maybe one day youll have all the resources you want to create your stories exactly how you imagine it at the speed you want it to be done, but until you get there you'll find so many people working with the same resources and available time that you have, and its about that network of small artists being able to support each other that can light a spark that you thought you needed an audience of hundreds to light.
it's honestly kinda awesome how you can have no friends for eight years as a kid and then for the rest of your life in any social situation you'll be at all times seconds from throwing your body at the nearest window. wow brains really are so adaptive.
i dont read comics but i think dc should create a new role called the Crazyperson Advisor and hire one for every writer. the crazyperson advisor has read and memorized every comic ever and can tell the writer when something contradicts established canon and how. obviously comics canon is at this point so convoluted and contradictory that it would be impossible to never write something that doesnt follow it but i think it would be good if it only happened on purpose. also i think it would make my mutuals make posts like “did timothy jones fucking kill his crazyperson advisor is that how this happened” and “i am going to kiss the green lantern 2030 crazyperson advisor on the mouth for this reference to the 1954 martian manhunter” and i think that would be fun. i would like to see them.
These are important things I have learned about writing fiction. I know these things, but sometimes I need a reminder. So I am writing them here, both as a reminder for myself, and as a reminder for all those who, like me, sometimes forget.
Characters must make choices.
Characters should often make bad choices before they make good choices.
Character choices should drive the vast majority of the plot. Characters reacting to having random stuff thrown at them is far less interesting than characters reacting to the stuff they've thrown after it's ricocheted around and comes bouncing back toward them.
If a character refuses to make a choice, there better be consequences for that too, and you better have a damn clear way of showing those consequences to the reader and the character.
Nearly every time I'm struggling with writing something, taking a step back and thinking about these 4 things usually helps get me unstuck.
