a show about an alien (alan tudyk!!!) playing one of the most interesting characters i have ever watched and interacting with members of their small town that FEEL like real people, not just archetypes or single personalities. These people are TIRED, they are happy, they get sad and panicked and excited and sometimes they dont know what to do, but they get back up every day and keep going. It's the indomitable human spirit. it's the relentless hope that even when things are bad, they'll get better. Because we're still here. It's that the married couple struggles, and sometimes you wonder if they should be together at all, but they talk about it and they cry and it's not perfect. they're not perfect, but they're goddamn willing to try for their family and their marriage, and that's all that matters. It's the unapologetic Native presence in the show, how they are just there, and there is no set up, no explanatory prologue, no mysticism or heavy stereotypes, just the refreshing existence of a people who are so deeply woven into the fabric of the town and the area that its like they were never apart. It's the Native American music used as backing tracks for the episodes, the decision to show the reservation as a place of love and family, a place where those who are lost can always find their way back home. It's the choice to show characters who have fucked up, no other way around it, but they are still loved. It is not scot-free love, but it is love regardless. It's the way that the characters are flawed, and funny, and they just love. I love you back, Asta Twelvetrees, and you Sheriff Mike and Deputy Liv, D'arcy and Sahar and Max and Mayor Ben and Kate and Dan and Jay and especially Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle (the alien one) because i get to see a person who is still trying to figure their emotions out, who struggles with a fear of death and the knowledge that grief never goes away, the feeling of missing something so far from you you can never go back, the parallels of a being a neurodivergent person and feeling like an extraterrestrial. I love you, Resident Alien.
