I don't give a shit if me being a weird furry online loses me any job prospects or if people talk or whatever- maybe it's fucked up that we hold something as minor and meaningless as that over someone's head, that we give it weight it doesn't deserve, you ever thought of that? Maybe I see the culture of belittling a person as "cringe" for having interests counter to the norms as a failure of society, and I'm gonna throw myself onto the damn pyre and fight to my last breath against it, ever considered that?

I'm not just being cute and funny when I say "live your truth no matter how weird it is," because you know what?

If you're not hurting anyone in a real and tangible way, if you're respecting the rights and comfort of others, nobody- NOBODY has the moral grounds to stand against you, and to hell with them if they try.

Please get weirder. Please stop being afraid of being your truest self for the sake of judgemental dorks online.

What you put into the world as a weirder, louder, more interesting person also enriches the people who read your work, see your art, take inspiration from your style or your courage, and from them it also enriches the people who reap THEIR increased and improved output.

And sure, you can dismiss these people as lazy, as stupid, as being elderly and so who cares. But from my 17 years of experience, I can tell you that technical instinct and ability varies widely across the entire adult spectrum. And I can also tell you that people have different strengths, and that just because someone isn't good with computers doesn't mean they aren't smart as hell.

And I can also say, again, that it really doesn't matter.

The first kind is that they buy a license for a pre-determined amount of check-outs. I'll just make some numbers up for the sake of illustrating what that looks like: Let's say $20 for 20 borrows. When the ebook has been checked out 20 times, the library has to renew the license and pay more money in order to continue lending out the ebook. The author gets a cut of that $20 as their royalties.

The second kind is literally paying per borrow. (Again just making up numbers here) Let's say the library pays 50 cents every time the book is checked out. The author still gets a cut as their royalties. Is it just 10 or 20 cents per borrow? Yes, but that adds up! AND it means that people who otherwise wouldn't have been able to read my book at all are able to read it, which is great! AND it means that the library is thriving and being used, which is also great!

So yes, authors DO get paid from library activity!!!!!!

I don't even like the Odyssey very much and I still thought this was a pretty brutal mangling of Odysseus's character. Nolan presents him as smart rather than specifically clever in that very double edged way. He is Wise rather than canny. No! It makes some of the plot beats that the movie is obligated to hit - having himself tied to the mast, lying about his identity - unmotivated by his character. He has to briefly lie for infiltration purposes, is found out by anyone who matters within minutes, and is in no way a compulsive liar man. Okay.

He's also just tormented throughout which is another flattening that makes him less of a complicated antihero than in the original text. He's not a prick, he participated in a war crime and got PTSD. I get that the movie isn't going to have him literally throw a baby off the walls of Troy but it could've at least used a bit of the Odysseus we see in Philoctetes, where he's a real bastard.

The movie doesn't have to be faithful to the poem, but maybe don't change it to something less good. Character growth is itself a somewhat modern idea, but I do think you could've done an interesting thing where Odysseus goes from the selfish, lordly prick we read about in Homer to someone with modern sensibilities who feels bad about sacking a city. Not Homeric, but it has parallels in other Greek literature like the Orestaia where the post-Trojan homecoming ushers in a new, more humane mentality towards the world. Like, he makes the leap from being cunning to wise, to having a psychology. But you'd have to actually have an Odysseus who's a complicated man of many turns who's straight up unlikable for a lot of it. Man, you made Oppenheimer! It's not out of your grasp!

Also an incredibly funny adaptation choice to have one of the maids be an actual traitorous slut who's set up to be justly punished - literally thrown into the final melee - and then for nothing to actually happen to her. Why even bother, what are we doing here

Also also, I guess it's fine but I was amused by how literally no one in the movie looked Mediterranean. Northern European, black, Indian, east Asian, but not a soul who looked to have been born within 500 miles of Greece.

Also also also, fairly bland looking throughout. "Realism" is silly when applied to Homer but the visual choices were consistently boring to me. The sack of Troy was really good, but most of the setpieces were mid.
