It works in a s1 rewrite (Damon getting close to Bonnie and being the one she trusts with knowing about her powers), a s2 rewrite (Damon actually wanting Bonnie to like him/have a truce with him so he uses his knowledge of magic to his advantage), a s3 rewrite (Damon and Bonnie bonding emotionally due to shared mommy issues + cheating. Bonnie’s powers has been more reactive since Jeremy cheating and he helps her), a s4 rewrite (Damon helping her with expression as he is staying away from Stelena or Elena that is sired to him) and a s5 rewrite (Bonnie needing to gain her magic back in an au where she doesnt die at the end of s4 and Elena has chosen Stefan so Damon decides to focus on Bonnie [probably for his own benefit too]).

Ever since my last TVD rewatch I can't stop thinking about the end of S4 E4 and the conversation that Damon and Elena have on her porch. If I didn't know that the whole sire bond saga was about to start I would have thought this was the perfect natural ending for any chance at a lasting romantic relationship between them. It seemed like he was realizing that he needed to let go of the idea of her as a vampire that he had and that she was realizing that she didn't know if she could survive what it took to be a vampire.
