just the ol' nine-to-five
[another regular day at work || a regular workplace relationship]
consuming media like
Vampires at Sea was a lot of fun. Most fucked up thing I've read in ages that wasn't fanfiction or anime.
I'm not done complaining about how dirty ATLA did Hama, btw., and because I'm a sucker for rewriting and worldbuilding, I've actually started tinkering on an alternative arc for the character that has grown entirely out of proportion, so let me yap a little more. Hama is the knot that roped me back into ATLA, apparently.
The episode's setup doesn't make any sense if you think about it for more than two minutes, and I think it's one of the biggest wasted storytelling opportunities of the entire show. See, I don't buy the premise of the Hama episode, so I'm not drawing the ethical, emotional, and even logical conclusions the writing tries to push on me.
Now, for the episode to happen at all, the writers shove three conditions into the setup that work against each other. First, the episode needs Hama socially embedded enough that the children can meet her casually and have a reason to hang out with her at all; thus, she's the owner of an inn and offers boarding to the Gaang. Second, the episode needs her to appear suspicious and unworthy of trust enough that Sokka can justify investigating her; thus, the kids can find the chest where she keeps the comb as a relic from home, revealing to them that she's from the Southern Water Tribe (don't bother thinking about the implications of non-violent resistance this comb carries, btw, since she managed to keep it through years in a prison during which the guards tied her up by hands and feet before they feed her water and through the escape, or what it means that she has to keep that last remenant of home hidden in a locked chest; would it expose her if she kept it in the bathroom? Does she fear it could? Episode says, who cares? It's just a plot device to reveal her origin. Obey the episode and don't ask questions) Third, the episode needs her crimes to be recent enough that the local community has not already exposed her, but frequent enough that the kids have reason to investigate at all. Thus, how convenient that Hama messed up the schedule during the last full moon and failed to capture her latest victim before sunrise, so the Gaang has someone to tell them an invisible force pulled him toward the mountain. Now, they know where to look for the missing people. (btw, that the man lived to tell the tale makes me additionally question how evil and dangerous Hama truly is because that is a senior, too; as if she couldn't have assassinated him in the month since to make sure he doesn't talk. As if that weren't the most logical decision if she were as ruthless as the episode needs her to be to justify the cruelty it unleashes on her)
As you see, to meet the plot requirements, the script simply stacks coincidences until the villain twist can unfold, but the character and the storytelling just become aggressively incoherent.

if you see me liking contradicting headcanons for the same character just know it's because I do not give a fuck and I have an active imagination #hewouldsaythat
sometimes it’s not about ‘would he say that or do that’ it’s more like that would be hilarious if he did because I have a jester’s heart

genuinely the funniest thing ra’s ever did was let talia keep jason. like what do you fucking mean his daughter found a dead 15yr old and supersized him into oblivion and then just gave him full access to the league’s compound. ra’s must have been watching this poor barely-pubescent kid trip over his new body-builder legs just fucking. squinty-eyed mouth open, absolutely fascinated with jason’s existence. jason was ra’s version of reality tv over there, he genuinely had no idea what the kid would do next and it was amazing.
"…is your daughter’s new pet project bothering you, my lord? would you like me to dispatch of him swiftly? you are staring at him rather intently."
"actually… call ducra. see if she’ll give him those magic swords."
*jason in the distance, trips over his own feet and faceplants the stone steps*
"what."
"look even you have to admit that seeing what he’d do with them would be interesting. i’ve been in the desert for 600 fucking years oleg, i’m bored."
~
“so what’s new with jason?”
“…he seems to have finally taken to his new body, and is throwing himself into training.”
“…:/“
“…we also have word that he might be starting a coup against his poison tutor.”
“magnificent.”
~
“…my lord… if you don’t mind me asking… why are you crouching in front of those doors?”
“shhhhh, i left gotham newspapers on jason’s nightstand and i wanna see what he does when he realises the detective adopted another kid.”
*distant sobs of rage* *crashes and screams*
“ok now somebody go in there and tell him the joker’s still alive. i’ll wait out here where it’s safe.”
“…”
Yeah I saw the lovecraftian horrors and didn’t succumb to madness. What- no I’m not a cultist, James. For Christ’s sake. What you’re forgetting my friend is that HP Lovecraft wasn’t a flexible man. His brain simply wasn’t stretchy enough to take it all in. I however, have short term memory issues. Flexibility is the name of the game when you can’t remember if you ate lunch or not. What’s the size of the universe? Big. You knew that already, James. Come on now. You don’t need to witness the terrifying ocean at the base of the entirety of reality itself to know that. Pass the brandy.
You must imagine the character I’ve created here wearing a suit and a monocle, by the way.
During a Eldritch Horrors based tabletop RPG my character was a young dandy who wasn't particularly interested in all this monster mystery stuff but his father (my brother's character) was a researcher who WAS very into it, so Bertie went along to make sure the old man didn't get into too much trouble. It was your average Eldritch Horrors RPG in that you don't make your characters with the expectation that they will survive for very long, both the game itself and the genre are very intent on turning your characters inside out, driving them insane, and blowing them up in no particular order.
The thing was, everything in this nightmare hellscape just seemed to keep coming up Bertie because the man was too stupid to realize what genre he was in. Every time he had to roll for a sanity check whenever he saw something crazy, the dice treated him so well that he just... didn't get it. Gee that sure is a funny costume. There's something wrong with that dog. These mean guys in stupid hats are trying to hurt that young lady, we can't have that! I had not built him this way, his intelligence stats weren't even that bad, random chance just made it so that this man was living a scooby doo adventure while everyone else was being consumed by The Horrors. The final straw was at the end of an adventure when Bertie escaped from the cultist headquarters by breaking out through the mansion's front window on a motorcycle with a hot rescued sacrificial maiden clinging to his back and leading the cultists on a merry chase through the hedge maze while the other adventurers escaped. His sanity score? HIGHER than when the adventure had begun. He had found the whole experience quite thrilling and felt very good about life in general! Bertie retired from adventuring to marry the maiden he rescued and care for his aging father and delight and bemuse his friends at the gentleman's club with stories of his 'wacky' adventures. I didn't want to risk breaking his ridiculous lucky streak.
can you show me some corvids? perhaps?

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream by Harlan Ellison
The King in Yellow by Robert W Chambers*
The Lottery by Shirley Jackson**
The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe
The Monkey's Paw by W.W. Jacobs

i got these knockoff boots online and instead of the brand name on the tag they have the name of an apparently nonexistent martin scorsese movie??? what the fuck
THE ORIGINAL? ON MY DASH
this post led to a series of events that had martin scorsese himself reacting to his alleged movie goncharov and it has less than 400k notes almost 3 years later?
