sleeping w weapons probably isn’t a good idea but they’re a little jumpy
Something that's really interesting (and sort of funny) to me is that in book 10, Valhallarama talks about how she's spent her entire life looking for the King's Lost Things, and yet one of the Lost Things is the ruby heart's stone. The one that Hiccup stole from Alvin, who stole it from Humongously Hotshot, who had gotten it as a gift by Valhallarama.
She must not have known it was a Lost Thing or she wouldn't have given it away, but I think it's really artistic that she had it, one of the things she dedicated her entire life to searching for, and was none the wiser that she had simply given it away.
#and for love!! it was noble!!#and it eventually found its way to hiccup of course but still!! what are the odds that she HAD it??#i wonder how she got it? did she inherit it? did she buy it or get it as a gift herself? who knows?#amazing#httyd books#how to train your dragon books#how to seize a dragon's jewel#how to twist a dragon's tale#valhallarama#httyd valhallarama#httyd book spoilers
It was half the Ruby Heart’s stone, if I recall correctly. She kept the other half.
What if she KNEW it was part of a Lost thing she had given away? She loved him so much that she gave it to him anyway, because she believed wholeheartedly that they both would come back to her. Because she loved to the point of conviction.
And if she knew it was half of a Lost Thing, and then thought Humongous was dead, don't you think she would have devoted herself even harder to finding the rest of the Lost Things, to the point of not trusting her family with that knowledge? because the last time she trusted someone with a lost thing, they never came back to her?
do you think she recognized the Lost Thing when Hiccup began wearing it? did she think that she could ask for it when she found the rest and this kept him (she thought) in ignorance about it?
or was she not home enough to know the change, and then only realized he had her lost Lost Thing long after she could have asked for it back?
I really love hiccstrid but i really appreciate that in the books there isn’t any love interest for hiccup.
This may be a dumb question, but did Hiccup ever become chief of the Hairy Hooligans ? Because that was the main plot of basically the first half of the series.
If I remember correctly, he was never actually chief ? Obviously he became King of The Wilderwest at the end of book 12, but is it ever established what happens after Stoick inevitably died ?
Did the chiefdom go to Hiccup, because it couldn’t go to Snotlout anymore (RIP) so was it Baggybum ? Or did Hiccup just rule as chief of Berk AND King of The Wilderwest ?
Anyone know anything ? Please help
#that's a good question actually#i figure hiccup defaulted as chief since he's also king but i could be wrong#httyd books tags by @wickedcriminal
ok but like!! what if snotlout could have been chief if he had accepted Hiccup as his leader and been loyal to him—like if he’d given up his percieved right to be heir and fought on Hiccup’s side only for Hiccup to grow up and become king, leaving the chief’s position open for Snotlout again—Snotlout was also his own undoing etc etc
!!!!!
I hadn't even considered that but wow, yeah that... yeah.
bringing in the thoughts ive had about this to say that if Snotlout had been nice to hiccup, hiccup probably wouldve been cool with him being chief from the very beginning
its not like he ever actually wanted to be Chief, its just the alternatives were not very good

I could take the how to train your dragon books like 30% more seriously if the characters had normal names but no the writer of the books that fundamentally shaped my values and defined my childhood named her characters stuff like Fishlegs. Squidface the Terrible. Snotface Snotlout. Chucklehead. Literally Hiccup
“‘He’s been hit…He’s been hit…’ Hiccup heard a shaking Fishlegs say as he helped Hiccup down from the Deadly Shadow’s back, and because Hiccup was nearly fainting it sounded like Fishlegs was talking from a long distance away.”
Flying Gator from the How To Train Your Dragon books.
Drawn in pencil, colored digitally.
I’d like to think that after the rebellion ended and everything had some time to settle, Hiccup and co. began to laugh more often and a lot harder than before. Idk maybe surviving trauma after trauma makes you appreciate life more. They are just kids after all.
Bonus:
i love hiccup horrendous haddock iii im putting him in a little jar and shaking him around

Has anyone read the How to Train Your Dragon series? I've always been curious, because I love the movies. It gets pretty dark in the second movie, so I'm curious if the books do that too (kind of like Harry Potter) or if they're not as good of a read for an adult.
Lol yeah the second movie does get dark but it ain't nothing compared to books ten and eleven. What's a bit of mind control and MCD when you've got slavery, torture, Major Character Death, and war machines the likes of which would never be allowed on an animated children's movie? Hiccup's Darkest Hour in book two is extremely sad, yes, but i have never read a series whose last book started off with the main character having nothing before. Especially when you thought that he already had started one of the books with nothing. Turns out he still had things for the author to take away after all.
Children getting hunted for sport is rather a specialty of Cressida Cowell's. Dude canonically finishes the series with a nervous tic he didn't have in the first book and an firsthand knowledge of how it feels to start getting digested.
(Also the skullions in book two are literally the stuff of nightmares, so the dark stuff starts getting peppered in pretty early)
#Do the books get dark LOLLLLLLLLL#sure stoic lives through all twelve books but you don't gotta kill off a character in order to get That Dark#You just gotta pepper in the idea that vikings owned slaves in the early books#And then pay off that setup in the most devastating way possible#Also you gotta waterboard a boy
THE TAGS I'M
literally the first bit that came to mind when i read the original question was That Whole Scene in book 11. this series is a masterclass on how to do setup and payoff and it's always always worse than you expect.
On Berk HR stands for Hooligan Resources is this anything
I feel like pre-character development Xar sorta has the personality of a stereotypical cartoon high school bully but like, if it never even crossed their minds to bully people that are weaker than them.
He's got that sort of charisma and "I'm better than you, everybody loves me" sort of attitude (because he wants so, so badly for his father to see him as strong and worth being proud of) but he adds onto this statement with "So if you choose to follow me then I will protect you with my life" and that's part of the reason why I love him so much.
#he’s punching up always#he might be obnoxious but you gotta respect it#twoo @seaglassdinosaur You. You get it.
obsessed with stories that start out silly and stupid and then turn out to be deep and heartbreaking in their beauty. like okay, make me cry at midnight while i reflect on the true meaning of friendship i guess

Again, I'd love to see a Wizards of Once movie. I'd love to see an opening narration that introduces the Darkwood and how wild and dangerous it is ("more dangerous than the Warriors?" "Oh, please, this place eats warriors for breakfast.") and how even the prettiest looking flower could be hiding a nasty secret. As the narrator says that last remark, the screen focuses on a very pretty but suspiciously jaw-shaped flower (with an X the color of witchblood displayed prominently on the petals because I like my foreshadowing to be extremely on the nose), and a bumbling, fuzzy little... flying creature buzzing on top of it to admire it. Xar swings in from offscreen and catches the baby sprite just as the petal-jaws start closing around it. Xar is revealed to be the narrator when he says "...But you don't have to be afraid of any of that! Because I'm the leader, and I, Xar son of Encanzo, can protect you from anything!"
oh and during the "this place eats warriors for breakfast" line the camera cuts to a young girl in an eyepatch, followed with visible recuctance by a boy covered in iron armor and if I recall correctly also a horse.
