I think this is post show, Marion still has some of her pretty makeup on and Jester desperately wants to draw her beautiful, talented mama right this second!
Β And Marion could never resist a request from her precious little Sapphire.Β πππ
(Image description: A digital illustration, toned in purples and pinks, of Marion Lavorre, a deep red, fat tiefling with horns that arc over her head, lavender eyes and long dark curly hair and wearing a deep blue satin dress gown and her daughter Jester, a young blue tiefling with a short dark blue bob, stubby horns (one with a pink ribbon tied around it), wearing a light pink frilly dress with a deep pink ribbon around her middle. Β Β
They are sat on Jesters bed, plush and blue, covered with cushions and surrounded by navy star studded curtains and light pink gauze that allows light through it. They are shaded in the canopied bed, but we can see through a gap in the curtains that it is a bright day in the rest of the room, containing an Art Noveau styled window and mirrored desk (in which we see a glimpse of the Traveller), strings of coloured lanterns and the walls plastered in Jesterβs drawings. Marion is posing for Jester as she draws her, one hand at her chest, head tilted and Β smiling indulgently, one eye on her small daughter in her lap, who is furiously scribbling with a pink crayon. Jester looks only at the drawing, her right hand is raised as a finger pointed up.
Marion is saying: βMay I move yet, My Sapphire?β
Jester replies: βNo no no! Iβm not done yet mama!β)

A collection of differently aged sloman chicks and an adult with a meg on his back, shown translucent to view the inside.
Here are sloman chicks.
When a sloman hatches by tearing and biting through the megg, it's either lightly or fully covered by fuzzy feathers with little color. They feed on "soup" from their mother's chest pouch with some help from the father, who, however, isn't always able to make more soup after baby hatches. More megg detail (some visuals slightly outdated).
Unlike mammals, slomen have a less refined feeding system, and the chicks have to puncture the pouch to get to the "soup". The holes are very small, much like the tips of the drinking teeth of the babies. The teeth aren't very visible in the image, but they form a triangle from the bottom jaw that directs flow into the mouth. They also help with breaking the megg, these chicks have no other teeth.
The younglings generally start walking on their feet no later than two months. This is when they are fully covered in fuzz and may start growing new teeth. Though that walking isn't exactly competent. Much like baby birds, they wobble around and fall at every step, especially if they try to run. Before their famous good-enough-walk they often crawl around on their ankles, with a few just ignoring that they have legs, instead dragging themselves by their arms everywhere (a behavior important to correct early).
Slims start getting their stripe-fluff latest by half a year. These feathers are more solid than the cottony covering and all show a unique stripe pattern. While they may walk just fine, they aren't yet good speakers, and even among their age, they use signs a lot more than speech. Complex words and signs come with a better understanding of concepts. Before any of that, they can't be trusted running in the fields without an older sibling.
It can sometimes take over a year before a running child can be trusted with running.
By this point, some children will also slowly gain new coloration that, in some cultures, will decide their gender early. This isn't always a good idea, with how long the coat takes to develop and how much assuming has to be made based on older siblings and parent colors. So most slomen until a certain age are not gendered.
The new colors always start higher on the body. So most often, the face is the first to become fully covered in "adult" feathers. But yes, this transition takes their whole childhood and only becomes faster at puberty, where other changes come.
When it comes to scent, the youngest chicks share a very similar scent that is recognized as the baby smell. Later, they develop their more personal one to be recognized by by their peers easily among the many.
It's only in puberty that a personal scent can tell someone which sex someone may be.
Until older, slomen also have much smaller scent glands on their face, which makes their faces a lot flatter than an adult's. The air space in the area also grows.
Most definitely. Just like human babies, slom ones whine.
Although, since they are more independent sooner than human children, being able to walk or even run, they don't need to scream to attract the adults' attention as much. They can come and get the attention themselves. So they will run, climb, poke, scream, and if they are extra naughty, knock stuff over like a cat that has not been fed for 500 years.

i think people are starting to confuse class analysis with bioessentialism. like... no not all men do this, but Men as a constructed social class do do this. that's still okay to say. that is regular material analysis of the world around us.

Bobole shown in natural patterns, with a kula and a sloman silhouette for reference.
The second most widespread domesticated predator the slomen have would be the rounder than round big-maw.
They come from temperate climates, where they roam the forests, eating animals of many sizes (usually based on pack size). Most often, they are seen in pairs (commonly of siblings), but this rule isn't unbreakable. Sometimes, packs reach over 6 members that stay together for a long period of time before they eventually separate into smaller groups. This adaptability might be why their domestication came quite naturally. From the bobole's point of view, slomen might have been great hunting buddies.
Bobole are intelligent hunters that rely on visualizing the path of their prey more than on communication between members. This makes them both adaptable and stubborn when working in bigger groups or with slomen. The usual strategy is for one individual to stay low, watching the target, while others chase it in the other's direction. The unmoving bobola waits for the moment the target is close enough to strike it. In case it fails, the one chasing will still be available on the other side to mayhaps save the hunt.
With smaller prey, they can be useful chasing the target for slomen too. But with their stubborn attitude toward their technique, it's more common for them to help keep the watch on prey and track it.
In an active hunt, the slomen direct the bigger prey to the usually-larger-breed bobola to deal the first hit, keeping the animal in grasp for a person to kill it with a weapon.
Some breeds are very territorial. For this, you will rarely see them in Ciwa, where you could consider them outlawed. Not because they could hurt a person, but because a kula could be at risk. The sacred feral population must live on.
Unlike a dog, bobolas are not as flexible to train. Little funny tricks are meant for a kula. These orbs are loyal and follow direction, but they take a lot of time to do their natural behaviors in ways most useful for people.
The easiest is for them to protect family members from threats, which is why many cultures have at least one devoted to the household kids and follow them on their mischievous journeys even when they sneak around the adults. Of course, one must establish what a threat is early on. Nobody wants an anxious bobola who bites their aunt.
In some regions, if you were to visit a village, chances are you would see them sitting by every third settlement, either sleeping or watching you. Sellers might even take them to the markets to keep thieves away.
Now, you might find these orbicular animals somewhat similar to the put-tut, but they are hardly related. Bobola are actually genetically closer to the 'slomland' bird than to slomen themselves. Just like with the raptorial shape before the mammal overtaking on earth, the upright biped is popular with convergent evolution. However, since vertebrates of the continent don't have true tails to balance them horizontally, most bipedal animals here keep their head high.
This creature has been pretty much designed for a looong time now, but I never got to actually rendering it.
The put-tut, or often among different cultural groups known as 'half a sloman', are contradictory to a common belief, not actually half of a sloman running around the forest at night.
They are a very distant relative to the sloman, with their limb structure being somewhat similar and both having horizontal jaws and more posable head.
Half-sloms eat smaller animals and meggs that they find buried or hidden in treeholes, but if they get a chance, they won't say no to larger ground-dwelling prey. In this case, their arms are largely unused while their legs deliver surprisingly powerful kicks and tears to flesh.
They can be found in many areas with some subspecies variation better fitting 'grass'land, forest, and shore environments. However, they are rare to witness, partially due to them being a popular bounty within sloman groups. These slomen believe in an inherent malice of the animal (as featured in folklore and a few religions). It probably doesn't help put-tuts find young slomen to be of suitable nutritional value.
Poobs are closely related to half-sloms but their diet is much more focused on invertebrates. When they do prey on larger animals, it's often a consequence of taking an unwilling hostage.
When a poob hides or goes to rest, they don't bother making their own burrow and just find one they like and get in. Sometimes these homes still have residents inside that the poob will kick and scratch until the owner gets tired. Other times they take whatever food stash or baby animals are for grabs at the den as the owner desperately tries to get inside their home. The skull of the poob is thick, even if that means their brain gets to be a bit disproportional. They will also take mud baths and get their head dirty on purpose to better hide their identity.
In the few areas where poob and put-tut species populations overlap, put-tuts have learned to fish the poobs out of their stolen burrows, making for a tough but rewarding meal.

Incredibly violent take of mine but I actually donβt think you need to relate to a story in any way to enjoy it. You can enjoy a story even if you canβt point at a character and insert some aspect of your personality or identity into them. In fact I would argue the need for a character like that to be present in every single story you experience is a sign of stunted growth.
