I've been seeing bits of discourse float by about western magical girl works having an overly narrow reference pool (mostly just pmmm and sailor moon), and how that leads to over-fitted derivative works that ignore the breadth and depth of the genre (with the counterpoint being that those works are influential and well regarded for a reason).

But leaving aside all the actual discussion there, I'm now amusing myself by picturing the conclusions about What Magical Girl Shows Are Like one could get to by drawing exclusively from a reference pool of a couple random shows with absolutely no broader knowledge of the cultural imprint of magical girls. Like,

Some myths I'll always remember:

I love these because NONE of them turned out the way they expected. They went into all three with pre-conceived ideas of how it would go, and each time they "failed." Elephants WILL cower from mice. A bull moves very gingerly through a china shop. It doesn't matter how you run because ALLIGATORS WON'T CHASE YOU.

And each time, they reacted with just... pure glee. "Holy shit, we were wrong! Oh my god! This is great! We were so wrong!"

And that, to me, is what science is. Being excited about being wrong because either way it's information.

Those of you lucky enough to not experience ChatGPT writing on a regular basis might not be aware of its tells. (See: Recent post that went viral on this website, with 1000s of people talking about how well-written it was and OP doubling down on how it couldn’t possibly be AI, despite it being one of the most obviously AI-generated posts I have ever read. Yikes.)

This article (archive link from NYT) offers a great explainer of ChatGPT/LLM writing tells. If you visit the post I linked above you will see that I listed out the exact same tells. That’s because they really are ubiquitous in AI writing. These tells are 99% of what you need to recognize AI slop writing in any context.

I encourage everyone to read this article! It is worth knowing when you’re reading AI slop! It is worth knowing that government leaders are using AI for everything from their tweets to their fucking Parliament speeches! It is worth knowing just how much of the writing you see everywhere is AI right now! Especially if it means you don’t fawn over egregiously bad Linkedin AI slop who said that.
