I think I just heard the worst argument in favor of suburbia, maybe ever

So I was arguing with someone and I said that suburbs are bad, monotonous, and unsustainable. And do you know how they responded?

They said that 52% of Americans live in suburbs, if it was unsustainable, they wouldn't do that, and now I wonder, are they stupid

And I have to say, that is the most ignorant thought ever. If something was unsustainable we wouldn't do that. Have they seen the fucking capitalist economy or the fossil fuel industry or you know just existed in the modern world

Because it's not more sustainable, it wastes water, forces car usage, is less energy efficient, and destroys natural land while Greenwashing that destruction as preservation against urbanization when cities take up less land and resources to hold more people

i just. i hate all this 'modernity is making us complacent, we need more struggle in our lives or we won't survive' bullshit. it's like

it's so much easier to experiment with ways of living if you can return to civilization and recover, write down what you learned and share it.

you can only really experiment if you have a surplus to experiment with. you want humanity to survive ~The Crash~ give people more free time and resources to do with as they see fit.

Just to add, we always hear "survival of the fittest", except... they don't. Many, many challenges end up with the fittest being disabled, which automatically and firmly pushes them out of that category. So, having such luxury as plenty of food, time and support can really make for a wild time of experimentation.
