Ray Bradburyâs short story âThere Will Come Soft Rainsâ that was written in 1950 is set on the day of August 4th, 2026 (tomorrow)!! Nowâs your chance to read it around the time itâs based in!
Audio: A recording of Leonard Nimoy reading it on Internet Archive.
Text: A PDF version.
Graphic Novel: On Internet Archive.
I love love love that you can hear the audience gasp in the proshot when Orpheus turns around. Iâve only seen the musical live once, but it was downright magical being one of the audience members gasping. Because maybe it will turn out this time. But it doesnât, of course. And youâre still surprised.
I didnât gasp in the movie theater. But I loved being able to hear the audience and the bit of meta that comes from us, the viewer, reacting to them, the viewer, and⌠yeah.
I think what drives me crazy more than anything else is âmaybe itâll turn out this timeâ because unlike what Hadestown would have you believe weâve actually been trying to âfixâ the ending of Orpheus and Eurydice for as long as that myth has been told.. we have been trying to puzzle out a way in which they get their happy ending.. Gluck gave them a happy ending in 1762 because how could you listen to Orpheusâs lament and not let him take her home with him!!! The game Hades has them end happily together again!!! Even in the original myth they are reunited in death!!! Who could listen to their tragedy and not try and make a better world for them!!!!!!
the craziest staging in hadestown will forever be eurydice running after orpheus in chant and him NOT turning around and that being the issue. he doesnât see her!!! the reason she goes to hadestown is BECAUSE he doesnât turn around!!! itâs an old song itâs a tragedy!!!!!!

We Raise Our Cups really fucks with me. Itâs brutally hopeful. Itâs a farewell to Orpheus. Sure. everyone knows that. but. its also a call to action.
Hadestown is not subtle in how it shows the power of revolutionaries, of love and hope and human compassion over that of the capitalist cycle of abuse. WRoC is talking about Orpheus. But it is also talking about every person with that revolutionary spirit.
Orpheus is all of us, and every person who stands against exploitation, is Orpheus. The theme is there, but itâs especially strong in Is It True, where he stands against the Fates themselves to challenge the world, only bolstered by the normal people that stood up and heard his words and showed him the power of words.
When Persephone asks where Orpheus is now, it is not entirely that she wonders where the man himself is, but also that she is pouring a drop to every person who holds his legacy and fights for the cause.
Then they praise the birds who sing in the night and the flowers that bloom in snow. A metaphor for those people who fight to make beauty in inhospitable places, who strive for good in darkness.
âTo Orpheus, and all of usâ
To Orpheus, to those who hold his spirit, to those who lead revolutions, and to those who follow him. The cycle of Orpheus and Eurydice is a love song. It is a tragedy. And yet we all know that one day. one time. they will make it out together. It is on that day, when an Orpheus finally manages to bring their Eurydice back, that the revolution succeeds, and the Shades get to follow their path out of Hades. And the mortals get to live free from the poverty and despair of their oppression.
We sing the song even though it is sad, because we know that spring will come and the world will go back in tune once they make it out together. And Hades can take the seasons, the food from our mouths, the fire from our stoves, every ounce of gold from the rivers, but what he cannot take, nor any other like him, is our songs and the cries of an impassioned heart. And may those songs inspire a thousand Orpheusâ to journey to defeat Hades. Because eventually one will win. It only takes one.
So let the song reach the next Orpheus, wherever they are wandering. Alone on this Earth. And let the song comfort them as they start the cycle again.
Working on a Song: The Lyrics of HADESTOWN, AnaĂŻs Mitchell
tbh I can't stop thinking about how i went into Hadestown being like "this is a tragic love story based on a greek myth I enjoy :)" and I came out the other side covered in blood being like "this is a thesis about how capitalism inevitably leads to both personal and global ruin, and so we are duty bound to resist it even as we lose, again and again and again. no matter how impossible it feels or how many times we fail and hit a wall and fall, we try again"
Callout post to Reeve Carney, specifically in the proshot version of Living It Up On Top
âTo the world we dream aboutâŚâ
Turns to the audience with a faint sadness in his eyes
ââŚand the one we live in nowâ
I just feel like we're not talking enough about the pro-labor, pro-union, themes in Hadestown. My boy Orpheus is literally wearing a red bandana. He said you simply have to stand up, together, even when it's terrifying and you have never done it before. There are more of us than them. Even if it seems impossible we have hope, because we are standing in solidarity. You can only make demands of gods if you have your union behind you. And then you realise they aren't gods, and you can bargain.

the musical STARTS with hades looking back btw. âyouâre earlyâ âi missed youâ is hades looking back. is anybody listening. orpheus is told he canât look back because hades knows he will because hades canât stop himself from looking back. and thatâs why the world is out of tune.
Xie Lian is such a fun POV character because you try to get his personality down, and at first you're like thinking, oh, heâs an awkward, down-on-his-luck kinda guy. No wait, itâs more like heâs cool and awkward and a gay Sherlock Holmes. Oh okay okay, no wait, heâs also traumatised; then you go too, oh he wasnât awkward at all. Heâs just been waking up from an 800-year-long depressive episode and is functioning about as well as can be expected. Damn.
Like, your opinion really goes from teehee, I wanna see this disaster gay in situations, to okay, everyone, pack it up and stop making him play Sherlock and just let peepaw retire in Ghost Vegas with his devil husband; heâs been through enough!!!! Like, truly, what a guy.
please vote for tylenol to have her face on a beer can $1 for 1 vote and the donation goes to the baltimore animal rescue and care shelter
TYLENOL HAS MADE IT INTO THE TOP TEN LETS FUCKING GO
VOTE NOW SO WE CAN SEE TYLENOL'S FACE ON BEER CANS IN THE DITCHES BY THE SIDE OF THE ROAD!!!
If you all will allow me a moment to analyze the competition as it exists, there's something interesting going on with the numbers.
As we all know, thanks to the support of the good people of Tumblr, Tylenol has experienced a meteoric rise to second place. Even though her competition is stiff, I believe in Tylenol's ability to go the distance.
But let's take a look at the competition:
Elmer seems to be a lovely boy. I have no qualms with Elmer, and think he would look fantastic on a beer can. But what about Elmer's campaigns? Who is the power behind the throne here, and how have they managed to find such breakout success on this competition?
A handful of wealthy donors are trying to buy this competition.
At the end of the day, all donations are good donations here. This is a charity event so every penny earned is going to help animals in need. But it's not lost on me that Elmer's current ranking is thanks entirely to a few individuals with the financial means to put their thumbs on the scale.
Tylenol's donors, comparatively, are small and numerous, mostly $1-10 donations from many passionate believers in what she stands for (autism and pain relief I think).
Overall, the donations tell a very different story than what the base ranking shows you. Elmer is held aloft by just 24 donors and bolstered by a few wealthy patrons, whereas Tylenol has won the hearts of literally hundreds of people. Even the current third place, Abby, owes her ranking to numerous small contributions rather than one or two large ones.
Tylenol is the people's princess.
Tylenol is the people's princess
Something is missing from the debate over educationally suitable literature
Despite giving Hua Cheng a lot of shit, I actually think post canon Xie Lian is borderline impossible to talk to for like two hundred years because he will only be talking about his husband. Like, no matter the story or situation, you are hearing about his husband. There are wife guys, and then there are wife guys, and then there is Xie Lian and his husband.
Like I just think Hua Cheng has had like 800 years of knowing heâs in love with Xie Lian so itâs more this constant background presence that everything about him is about loving his husband but he is not saying that every five seconds. Xie Lian, however, fell hard and fast and is still so delighted by it heâs telling everyone, heâs happy for the first time in centuries, and heâs telling everyone why. Itâs sweet, but I know the Heavens are tired.

Anniversary of APOLLO 11 MOON LANDING
On July 20, 1969, 109 hours and 42 minutes after launch, Neil Armstrong and Edwin âBuzzâ Aldrin entered the lunar lander âEagleâ, made a final check, and the Eagle undocked from the lunar orbiter âColumbiaâ, where the third member of the crew Michael Collins, stayed in orbit around the moon. Partially manually piloted by Armstrong, the Eagle landed 0 degrees, 41 minutes, 15 seconds north moon latitude and 23 degrees, 26 minutes east moon longitude. Armstrong stepped out, and Aldrin followed 20 minutes later: human beings stepped on the moon for the first time. The two men spent 21 hours and 26 minutes on its surface. One of the astounding aspects of the mission was the seeming simplicity of the technology used to get man to the moon. According to Oliver Gassmann, professor of Technology Management, the mobile phone in your pocket has one million times more memory than the Apollo 11âs computer. Same about the procesor: the latest phones typically have more than 100,000 times the processing power of the computer that landed man on the moon 50 years ago.
âIt suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didnât feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.â âNeil Armstrong
