š§ What was the key choice or decision you had to make for this story? If you had chosen differently, what would the story have turned into?
This is an interesting question. Thanks for asking! I had this story tumbling around in my head since finishing the series for the first time, like a decade ago, but I didn't think I could do it justice then, so I just had it simmering in the back of my mind for years. But after a year of rejection from the publishing industry, I was super down in the dumps and lost the joy in writing. I was very bitter and sad, and I wanted to write from the pov of someone who was also bitter and sad. Coincidentally, I also just finished reading one of my favorite time-travel books of all time, and I thought fuck it, ima write it. So to make myself feel better, I did.
There are a lot of changes that I would have made if I hadnāt started it when I did. Mainly:
I really wanted to get to CF. I was originally going to send Peeta back to before the Quell, but it didnāt feel right. And I was doing this for fun (and I thought no one was gonna read it) so again, I said fuck it, and sent him back to the very beginning. Which Iām glad for.
Also the science behind the time travel plays a huge role in the story. This wasnāt the original plan, but having just read Recursion by Blake Crouch, it was kismet because his time travel science is based off memory. And who better to travel through time than hijacked Peeta, who has corrupted memories?
Lastly, if I werenāt so sad and bitter, I would never have started it. I needed to fall back in love with writing. And that was the biggest success of all.
Moral of the story: Say Fuck it and write the fic.

i get that americans love their cultural imperialism, but it really does piss me off that june is āinternationalā pride month just because something happened in the united states.
in aotearoa, june isnāt our pride, itās theirs. marsha p johnson and sylvia rivera are their historical figures, not ours. the phrase that āyou owe your rights to Black trans womenā is true there, but here we owe our rights to (mostly) MÄori historical figures. i have the freedoms i do because of the legacy of an entirely different set of people operating in an entirely different context at entirely different times.
But because of american cultural imperialism, most queer people in Aotearoa donāt even know our own queer history. Carmen Rupe, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, the Dorian Society, Gillian Laundon, Georgina Beyer, and the Wolfenden Association are some of our queer history. We should know their names! we should know what they did for us! but because of the power of the american imperial machine, we donāt.
our national pride month should be july, the month that the Homosexual Law Reform Act passed in 1986. our two largest cities hold their pride festivals in february and march, respectively. american queer history has very little (or nothing, depending on who you ask) to do with our queer history. anecdotally, from my own queries, queer youth in aotearoa know more about american queer history than our own.
anyway, happy pride, americans. iām truly sorry that most of you donāt see the negative impact your nationās culture has on the rest of the world. and to the rest of the world reading this, try searching for your own country and cultureās queer history, donāt accept the american narratives as your own. we deserve our own histories divorced from the cultural hegemony of the USA.
