woman who literally just passed an open pyometra is ANGRY!!! about her confinement and does not appreciate your attempts at making it better with toys
please update about your dog breeding journey for those of us who don't follow along on the other socials. sooooo glad Bram is such a chap and rallied through the pyo!! 💜
ok this is a monster of a post
and i'll make another later discussing the literature
okay, so here's the details of the breeding process & handling the outcome with Bramble this past spring
i made a much more formal/professional version of this on my kennel page bc i do think it's a valuable experience to share, but dogblr's gonna get a less formal one that is also maybe got more opinions from me in it
and probably also like. the research
on my kennel page i only talked about catching the open pyo and then treating it; i'm actually gonna detail my experience start to finish
warning: this is SOOOO fucking long. i broke it out into 3 header sections but godspeed. feel free to send follow up questions in the replies or by ask

Bella, Beagle (3 y/o), Cobble Hill Park, Brooklyn, NY • “Funny story actually, he had a different name for her. He wanted to call her Jessica…just a random name. You wanted to call her Jessica… I was like that’s a weird name for a dog. I don’t know where he came up with Bella; I think we went down the list and were like Bella sounds really sweet. She is more of a people person than a dog person. She definitely has a few spots in the house she has claimed. Matt has an Eames chair that she’s claimed. You have to trade – ‘If I give you my spot, I want a piece of bacon’.”
in so fascinated by borzoi dogs, they are my huge inspiration to do original art they are like magical creatures of dogs
Saturday was Indigo’s 20th “gotcha day” anniversary and this (from 9 years ago) popped up in my memories today. Shout out to the dog who helped me grow more than any other and who secured the permanence of Aussies in my heart and home.
great question, buddy, I hadn’t really thought about it like that

the only real difference between a girl dog and a boy dog is that boy dogs have a tiny little secret drop of piss somewhere at all times. and if you think 'mine doesnt' he does. you just havent found it yet.
this post has been brought to you by the fact that my boy dog has learned to lift both his right and his left leg to mark. i know this, because he now has piss stains on both sides of his belly

the face you make when your chair doesn’t have a pillow
problem solved
I’d already finished all my sorting by the time I got this question but I wanted to answer it anyway because it’s FUN. My joke answer is a photo of one (1) copy of Sun Tzu’s The Art of War.
1. A subscription to the Aussie Times is not a book but I do think anyone who owns Aussies and cares about the breed should have one… because we believe in monetarily supporting parent clubs that protect the original form and purpose of the breed—beyond looking pretty in a show ring—in this house. (Fuck USASA, all my homies hate USASA.)
2. All About Aussies - Jeanne Joy Hartnagle
Can ms Hartnagle occasionally be found going insane on Facebook in real time these days? Sure. But this is a pretty comprehensive summary of the breed from someone whose family has been involved with it since its inception, which makes it a cool read for those of us who love Aussies.
The next three are not Aussie-specific in that they’re specifically about or tailored to the breed and I am biased by my job but. Hear me out.
3. How To Behave So Your Dog Behaves - Dr. Sophia Yin
A beautiful combination of behaviour science and everyday pet dog training. It manages expectations and teaches the reader how to do something that every single Aussie owner should be able to do: train a dog with clarity. This is not a breed (like most others, tbh) that I think should be left to develop habits on their own in a vacuum.
4. Frantic, Fired Up, and Freaked Out! - Laura VanArendonk Baugh
The reactivity handbook. :) I have to go on the record and state that I do not think Aussies are any more prone to reactivity than any other herding breed that’s managed poorly: this book is on my list for border collie and GSD owners, too. However, reactivity is the thing I see pet Aussie owners—and sometimes even trainers who haven’t raised many herdy dogs/puppies—struggle with the most. This is a practical, easy-to-follow book that teaches owners how to respond appropriately to and support their dogs through most kinds of over-arousal/reactivity/dysregulation that can look like bad behaviour and hyperactivity to the inexperienced eye. (I also love that it touches on potential medical causes of reactivity.)
5. Predation Substitute Training, Volume 1: Hunting Together - Simone Mueller
First, I stole this from @tea-time-terrier like a year ago and I gotta give it back to him. BUT. This book was such an interesting read and it has a practical, motivation-based approach to dealing with (managing and redirecting) prey drive—especially chasing. That “control movement first, think after” instinct can be a problematic one for a lot of Aussie owners to deal with. Having a book like this, that reframes the dog’s desire to chase as something to be channeled and healthily enjoyed in certain contexts vs. trained and managed in others, turns the conflict between the dog and owner into something more cooperative. It actually covers (albeit slightly to the left) a decent chunk of the skills that dogs need to be successful in herding without… getting into all that.
THANK YOU for the question!
