jimmy novak is a fascinating character to me and at least 80% of the reason for that is that no one in their right mind would ever cast misha collins to play that character. like, misha played him because he was already playing cas but if they had written a guy like jimmy without cas existing first they would never have cast a guy like misha to play him. it's not his type. and it makes jimmy come off really strange in an interesting way.

#this is all true and all very funny#it's also just#jimmy's entire arc is that of a man in a lavender marriage???#we know almost nothing about him except that he's a midwestern man with a boring job#and then cas shows up and he just#runs away with cas#like the rapture is an absolutely fascinating episode#because yes on one level it is about like vessels and what happens to them#but also on the other it's also about jimmy choosing to leave his family because something about him that is fundamentally immutable#(textually being cas' vessel)#endangers his idyllic midwestern nuclear family#oh the supernatural discourse about deviancy!

"i need you" is already SUCH a line to drop when the person you love is beating you to death, but one key reason why dean may have said it is because he said the exact same words to cas in purgatory to convince him to come with him to the portal. and purgatory was dean and cas' special bonding time, the place where everything feels "pure." so dean is repeating to cas the things he told him in purgatory because he knows how meaningful and raw their time there was and he's hoping that this will get through to cas. that cas will remember that dean needs him so much that he refused to leave purgatory for an entire year until he found cas.
