Iām in the middle of moving this blog from a secondary to a primary account.Ā Our regularly scheduled program will be back soon.
Bah, humbug
Day 21: FlyLady answers your questions
Except I donāt want to read any more. Ā I canāt take any more upbeat peppy voices today. Ā Reading her attempts at encouragement leave me feeling like a cartoon teenager: āWhatever,ā and I roll my eyes.
Maybe later on I will revisit some of the earlier, more helpful steps in this project. Ā I havenāt shown you my Useful Notebook yet. Ā Or the post-it notes Iāve left for myself; those could use a refresh, actually, because Iāve begun to tune them out. Ā Or maybe I will just take a nap. Ā That counts as self-care, and it gets me closer to tomorrow by an hour.
Getting my house in order
Day 20: Laundry
āA load a day keeps Mt. Washmore away."Ā The FlyLady system is to do a load of laundry every day, whether itās completely full or not.Ā Iāve been doing the washy like this since my children were small. Ā Back then, it had to be every day because there was so much laundry. Ā Especially diapers ā I was very pleased with our system of dealing with cloth diapers, but it did require two loads a week of hot wash. Ā At least in the US we have a dryer for the socks and washcloths; in Australia we did a load a day and hung it on the line outside, or a clothes horse in the living room when it rained. Ā Now, if we miss a day or even two, itās not a catastrophe, but I find itās better for me to stay in the habit.
But that wasnāt what I wanted to write about. Ā When I started this blog, I was cheery and energetic. Ā The last few days, not so much. Ā Thatās kind of an understatement, actually. Ā More like bitter and resentful, alternating with hard and detached. Ā Iām sure itās a hormonal state, and if I donāt do anything destructive it will pass in a few days more. Ā
At least I still have energy to keep working. Ā In the winter I generally add a fluctuating layer of limp exhaustion and hopelessness to the entire month. Ā A lot less gets done. Ā Some years, I read a lot of Facebook in the winter. Ā One year I wrote a lot. Ā That was better.
This is why Iām doing this whole FlyLady project. Ā I have to be able to live my life even when the me who planned it isnāt showing up to do the work. Ā If I want to homeschool my children, there have to be routines that they and I both know and can rely on when my desire and energy fail. Ā Getting the house clean is a nice bonus. Ā Having an orderly house certainly feels better than being surrounded by chaos. Ā But these joyless, angry days remind me that thereās more to the work Iām doing. Ā Iām building a scaffold around my life for the days I canāt hold it together myself.
Today, I have no expectation of success. Ā But I know how to work anyway. Ā I will be doing laundry and cleaning the bathroom and sorting through piles of junk. Ā Today, I donāt need success. Ā Itās enough just knowing that another day I had thought these tasks were worthwhile. Ā Iāll just show up and do the work.
Onward, onward
Day 19: The same old things
As far as I can tell, there is nothing new weāre being asked to do today. Ā This is good. Ā I have already given up on getting all the other FlyLady things done and am just going forward anyway with what I can manage.
On todayās instruction page, instead of a new task to do thereās a reminder that FlyLady posts testimonials in the hope of encouraging us beginners. Ā I am hormonal and bitter; reading about other peopleās success leaves me feeling angry, disgusted, and loathsome. Ā So instead of reading I am going to just do the things and not think too much. Ā Take a walk. Ā Pick up some mess. Ā Find things that can be given away or discarded, and make them go away. Ā Eat some good food. Ā Watch Star Trek or YouTube with my children. Ā Sleep when tired. Ā Repeat. Ā Keep repeating until it gets better.

Ten and a Half Good Ideas
Day 18: Eleven Commandments
Yesterday I was too snarky to write about FlyLadyās Eleven Commandments.Ā Mostly these are sensible and useful advice, but there are a couple of things that make my skin crawl.
Keep your sink clean and shiny.
Get dressed every morning, even if you donāt feel like it. Donāt forget your lace-up shoes.
Do your morning and before-bedtime routine every day.
Donāt allow yourself to be sidetracked by the computer.
Pick up after yourself. If you get it out, put it away.
Donāt try to do two projects at once. ONE JOB AT A TIME.
Donāt pull out more than you can put back in one hour.
Do something for yourself everyday, maybe every morning and night.
Work as fast as you can to get the job done. This will give you more time to play later.
Smile even when you donāt feel like it. It is contagious. Make your mind up to be happy, and you will be.
Donāt forget to laugh everyday. Pamper yourself; you deserve it!
Did you catch that? Ā āMake your mind up to be happy, and you will be.ā Ā No, no, no. Ā Just no. Ā I mean, smiling, sure. Ā No harm in that, and it is nicer to spread around than frowns. Ā But āmake up your mind to be happyā? Ā I am going to have to go offline again to vent all the bile this sentiment calls up in me. Ā #depressionisreal.
Iām also not a fan of āDonāt forget to laugh everyday.ā Ā Iām in such a bad mood from #10 that I have difficulty forgiving the lack of a space between every and day. But thatās normal human frailty, not something that deserves mockery. Ā I understand and basically agree with the sentiment: itās important to make time for the things that make me happy. Ā I just need different words.
Lauraās Ten and a Half Good Ideas
Keep your sink clean and shiny.
Get dressed every morning, unless you are actually sick and need to send a clear message to your family. Donāt forget your lace-up shoes, or earrings, or makeup. Ā You are beautiful, and you are also on the job.
Do your morning and before-bedtime routine every day.
Donāt allow yourself to be sidetracked by the computer. Ā Easier said than done, I know, but do keep trying to stay on target. Ā Timers and lists are good tools to help.
Pick up after yourself. If you get it out, put it away. Ā Maybe you can teach the children to follow your good example.
Donāt try to do two projects at once. ONE JOB AT A TIME.
Donāt pull out more than you can put back in one hour. Ā I know that sometimes youāre going to do it anyways, and youāre going to end up walking around the mess on the floor for a month. Ā I still love you.
Do something nice for yourself every day ā maybe every morning and night. Remember to make time in your life for things you enjoy.
Work as fast as you can with kindness. Ā Getting the job done sooner will give you more time to play later, but you donāt need whips and chains. Ā Itās also okay to take breaks when you need them.
Smile even when you donāt feel like it. It is contagious. Ā (Try this in public places or at the grocery store: people generally will respond to your smile with their own. Ā These kinds of positive social interactions are good for everyone.)
And then one more, which could be 10 ½;
Itās not wrong for you to want joy and comfort in your life. Ā You donāt have to earn it; you donāt have to deserve it. Ā You are already enough. Ā I love you and want you to be happy.
Early to bed, early to rise
Day 17: Do the things, and also go to sleep at a reasonable hour.
Well, this is completely reasonable and also impossible.Ā Sleep, that knits up the ravelled sleeve of care⦠Some of us have very loosely-made sleeves, it seems, that need a lot of nightly repair.Ā Before I was a mother, before I fell pregnant, I slept about ten hours nightly and felt great.Ā Mentally sharp, physically rested.Ā When my first daughter was born, that changed to five or six hours nightly, taken in two-hour bites; that changed in various ways through her toddlerhood and then my second daughterās babyhood and young childhood, but I donāt think I started having even the option to sleep through the night uninterrupted for eight or nine years.Ā And āsleeping though the nightā doesnāt mean getting enough sleep or not waking at all, just that Iām no longer interrupted by my children.Ā Instead, I now wake up on my own, because Iām too hot or cold, or I have to use the toilet, or Iām thinking about troubling things.Ā Or I need socks on my feet.Ā Or because Iām hormonal and canāt help sleeping lightly.Ā Or I canāt figure out why.Ā Sometimes I think Iāve forgotten how to do this sleep thing.
And then thereās the other problem.Ā I have seasonal depression, aka SAD, aka seasonal affective disorder.Ā The clinical kind, not just the blues.Ā Part of the necessary treatment is daily use of a light box for intense bright light in the early morning.Ā So for much of the year I need to be awake and in front of my light at 6 am every day, so I donāt start thinking about throwing myself under a bus or other awful things.Ā This year has been extra challenging (translate: remission didnāt come as usual in April) so Iāve been continuing the light therapy.
A little math here: in order to get ten hours of sleep, Iād have to be falling asleep at 8 pm.Ā Not gonna happen.Ā 9 pm is sometimes attainable if Iāve had a very quiet day and the kids are in bed early.Ā 10 is a reasonable goal, but the interrupted eight hours that gives me still doesnāt feel like enough.Ā Enough to function, yes, but not enough to wake feeling fully rested, and definitely not enough to feel sharp.Ā I am always foggy these days.Ā I forget things.Ā All the time.Ā I think about my motherās complaints about memory loss, starting about the same time in her life and continuing now into her 70ā²s.Ā Is this it?Ā Am I ever going to feel sharp again?Ā Or get enough sleep?
Okay, okay, enough complaining.Ā Iāll keep working on bedtime.Ā Progress, not perfection, and all that.Ā I know that my daytime self will eventually thank me for extra minutes of sleep at night.
Read something that helps you
Day 16: Do the other things, and also read FlyLadyās website.
Like yesterday, todayās task is straightforward.Ā I already do this, sometimes, in lieu of subscribing to her overwhelming flood of emails.Ā The principle, in general, is good: read something inspiring every day.Ā Or if inspiring is too high a bar, something encouraging. Something that reminds me of the world I want to inhabit, in which I am fully functional, capable of meeting my responsibilities with something left over, alive all the way through and able to enjoy living.Ā Sometimes FlyLady is the right place for me to look for this kind of encouragement.Ā Other times, scrolling through Tumblr is better; Iāve found marvellous pockets of positive affirmation here for real people in our various messy struggles.Ā Other times, I need a flesh-and-blood friend on the telephone or by email.Ā I need reminders to keep me on track.Ā I am right here.Ā I am maybe not healing, exactly, but kind of growing forward.Ā I can do this hard thing.Ā I am already doing it.
Body Love
You may have heard me raving about Elizabeth Cooperās āQueer Body Loveā, the interview series I listened to last month. Ā The interviews are no longer available, but I am enjoying her follow-up emails (you can try, too: see elizabethjcooper.com). Ā Anyhow, last weekās encouraging email contained the story of trying something new ā an ecstatic dance event. Ā She tried dancing, but it just wasnāt working for her. Ā So she sat down and wrote. Ā I love how she describes what happened next:
āI felt freedom.
My freedom looked different than most of the hundred plus people in the space, most of whom were moving very energetically. I certainly didnāt see anybody else writing or reading.
I wrote the following in my notebook: āI feel such delight in writing right now. It feels delightfully subversive. But Iām not doing it to be subversive - Iām doing it because itās what I want to do. And that - knowing what I want and taking it a step further and actually doing it - feels so good.āā
I seldom am aware of my own presence. Ā I donāt easily know what it is I want, let alone how to pursue it. Ā But I recognize that feeling of joy. Ā Thereās a wonderful, deep freedom and peace that come with finding my place, the place I fit. Ā Right now, my focus is on survival. Ā Iām making plans and carrying them out. Ā Iām doing the things that will hopefully keep me afloat through my monthly crashes now and the expected seasonal crash to come. Ā But every now and then I happen across something that reminds me of something deeper.Ā Writing is like that.Ā Ā Thereās a kind of quiet, centered calm clearness and joy that comes with writing from a place of stillness. Ā It feels real.Ā It feels so good.
Iām not used to thinking about this kind of interior happiness as related in any way to body love. Ā What does embodied happiness feel like, anyway? Ā This housecleaning project that Iām working on is also about making my life, my whole life, hospitable for me who has to live in it. Ā Maybe it will happen that this challenging outward, physical world I move through in my body will come to touch or overlap with my delightful, protected interior world. Ā Wouldnāt that be something? Ā To be alive all the way through? Ā Mind, heart, body, to be a whole person?
Doona, duvet, comforter
Day 15: Do the other things, and also make your bed.
Make the bed: check! Ā My dear, tidy, organized husband taught me this when I was just a young slob. Ā Making the bed makes the bedroom look so much better. Ā It also creates a clean surface onto which to dump your messy hair drawer so you can sort the contents, allowing you to discover that some unknown person has used your drawer to catch fingernail clippings.
When we lived in Australia, we were introduced to a new kind of bedding. Ā Here, I understand they are called duvets, but in Melbourne they were called doonas. Ā For our daughters, for years, all we used on the beds were a fitted bottom sheet and a doona in a nice washable cover. Ā Instead of dealing with sheets and blankets and tucking and smoothing, making the bed became very simple. Ā Fluff the doona over the bed, more or less straight if possible, and be done with it. Ā When the sheet gets changed, so does the doona cover. Ā Clean and tidy enough, and easy for people who find the physical world clumsy and inconvenient to navigate.
For the adults, we gave up on big soft fluffy doonas some years ago, because my husband and I have incompatible heat and cooling needs. Ā In my fantasy land, I will someday have my own room, and on the bed will be the quilt my motherās mother sewed for me and the afghan my fatherās mother crocheted for me. Ā The colors are rose and blue and cream, and seeing these things in my mindās eye takes me back twenty years to the big house in Bloomington, with its old dark wood doors and double-hung windows with counterweights built into the frames. Ā My bed is made, neat and comfortable, and my room looks like home. Ā I still have the quilt and afghan, but thereās no place for them in the home where I now live. But their time may come again. Ā I can wait.

A map of our time
Day 14: Do [some of] the things, and read about calendars.
I will not be decluttering or cleaning much today, because one of my feet is weirdly painful. Ā Instead, I get to sit at the computer and knock off some of the online tasks Iāve been storing up. Ā Yay!
Todayās task is to read about calendars. Ā This one, at least, I already understand. Ā We have a desk-type calendar with big squares mounted on the kitchen wall, and everything that happens in the family gets written there. Ā Dd15 convinced me last year that itās worth springing for the one with pretty colors, and Iām so glad she did: Iām looking at this thing every day, multiple times a day, and it makes me happier to look at something I think is not ugly.Ā The system is not perfect.Ā Charles uses a smartphone app for his own appointments, and sometimes they donāt make it onto the real paper calendar in time.Ā Sometimes I just plain forget to write things down.Ā I am gradually becoming more willing to consider an app (hear me dragging my feet?) as a backup, so I can see his schedule when Iām planning doctor and dentist visits, but really.Ā The paper one is better.
Thereās another nice side effect to relying on a single physical calendar. Ā When Iām asked whether I can do something, I canāt give a definite answer right away. Ā Having to look it up allows me to stop and think: do I really want to do this? Ā Do I have time to add this thing and still feel relaxed and rested? Ā Iām not good at knowing those things on the spot, and not having a calendar at hand creates the time I need to find out.
One of the things I see coming for us is a weekly rhythm. Ā As our homeschool gathers speed, there will be some days that are organized outside classes and lessons, and others when we can focus on our own work at home. Ā Iām looking forward to developing a predictable pattern, although the list of activities weāve already said yes to is worryingly long. Ā Maybe today I will prepare the weekly overview that hangs on another wall in the kitchen, so we can see how complicated the choreography of our activities is likely to be.
The instruction book
Iāve been meaning to share this with you, in case someone is interested in following along with the FlyLady part of what Iām doing. Ā Somewhere along the way I got tired of clicking around the FlyLady website and found a pdf summary of her relevant daily steps. Ā This is much easier to use:
http://www.flylady.net/d/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/31-Beginner-BabySteps2262015.pdf
Should you choose to accept it...
Day 13: do [most of] the things, and do a cleaning mission.
Iām back in the saddle today. Ā Not having to go out for groceries or doctors makes this much less hard. Ā Anyhow, I worked on my bedroom for a respectable but not out-of-control time and am pleased with the improvement I see. Ā The dining room table has again become a staging area for homeless things to gather, but I am working on it little by little. Ā And I read about the daily missions todayās FlyLady instructions talk about.
I think I get the idea: one of the helpers at FlyLady Central puts together a set of small tasks each week in the area of the house weāre focusing on. Ā This week, evidently, itās bathrooms; each day this week has a cleaning or decluttering job that goes beyond the basics. Ā The task that was proposed for today was to take a toothbrush and scrub around the faucets ā five minutes, so as icky as it might sound it shouldnāt be an awful job. Ā I, of course, canāt do what I am told. Ā Instead of scrubbing faucets, I dump out my drawer of hair stuff and put back only the things I actually use. Ā This takes a little longer but is immensely rewarding: no more dead splayed-out bobby pins and scratchy bun pins, no more chaos of elastics, no more combs that nobody uses, no more washcloths that donāt belong there anyway. Ā Just the good stuff, and not too much of it.
Iām not beating myself up, either, about whether I actually did *all* the other things or only most of them. Ā I did enough. Ā I get to rest now. Ā Wow, that feels weird to say. Ā I did enough. Ā I get to rest now. Ā (Even though somewhere in the world, somebody is still working. Ā Shhh! Ā Donāt tell them.)
āGood enoughā is good enough
Life keeps happening around here, and it does not stop while I am cleaning.Ā This week has been full of doctors and dentists and other appointments, and weāve also tried adding a wee bit of study to our homeschool life.Ā Iāve been able to do maybe 3 out of 5 things on my daily FlyLady list ā different things each day, so the success gets spread around.Ā I am calling this good enough.Ā My life is going to keep happening.Ā I can expect that there are going to be days, maybe weeks, when I am not going to make progress with tidying or decluttering.Ā That is okay.Ā Some days, I canāt even write two lines to tell you that I am still here and have not forgotten.Ā That is also okay.Ā It is okay that I canāt do all the things.Ā No guilt.Ā I am just going forward from where I am today.
Saturation
Okay.Ā I am having trouble getting back to some forward motion here.Ā I have the sadly familiar feeling of having too many balls to juggle, so many that itās simply impossible to keep them all in the air.Ā The only thing I can do is decide which ones to drop.Ā Will I get enough sleep?Ā Will my children have my attention when they want it? or when they need it?Ā Will there be cooked food today?Ā Will there be any homeschool activities?Ā Will I keep records of the childrenās project work?Ā Will I have any contact with friends?Ā Or with my husband?Ā Will we make it to appointments with doctors (dentists, optometrists, etc.)?Ā Will there be any decluttering?Ā Or tidying?Ā Will my sink still be clean?
If you have never read the spoon analogy of life with a chronic illness, you might like to read this:Ā http://www.butyoudontlooksick.com/tcS3_media/uploads/2010/02/BYDLS-TheSpoonTheory.pdfĀ I donāt have lupus or fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome; I donāt have rheumatoid arthritis or any chronic pain condition.Ā My body is healthy.Ā But the spoon story gives me a way to talk about my experience of being limited.Ā
I no longer know whether itās sickness or health; I just know that sometimes I canāt.Ā Canāt do things that look easy.Ā Canāt do something, anything, just for fifteen minutes.Ā Sometimes just doing the basic vegetative things is mentally and emotionally exhausting: I make lunch for my children, and then I want to crawl into bed and hide and sleep.Ā Today, Iām not feeling that kind of global overwhelm.Ā I think Iāve just reached my saturation point with new additions to the daily routine; Iāll keep working here at day whatever-it-is until I feel a little more peaceful, until Iām ready for a change.Ā But Iām remembering the winter feeling.Ā I remember the sense of helplessness, the way it seems that life rushes inexorably onward and Iām unable to keep up.Ā I hope this year I will have created enough external structure to carry my family through the times when I am struggling.

Keeping on, sort of
Today would have been day 12, with the special project of deleting all the old FlyLady emails lying around.Ā But I already solved the too-many email problem about three days in, when I saw that the flood of reminders was going to make me miserable and overwhelmed: I unsubscribed from the fire hose.Ā Now I get only one FlyLady email, which I look at quickly and then delete.Ā I try to look at the daily article on her website, but over the weekend I havenāt done even that.Ā I am just treading water here ā feeling basically okay but without time or energy to spare.Ā Iām allowed to rest when I am tired, and Iām tired.Ā So Iām resting.Ā Tomorrow I will do my best to pick up the daily projects again.
Ugh.
Of course there was going to be a day, and this was it.Ā I started off all right with the usual morning self-care and laundry, and I did some tidying before I left to do the errands.Ā But sometime after lunch my mental focus crumbled, and my child needed attention, and I did not nap.Ā Now it is late and I have only a zombie evening brain left.Ā Tomorrow I will jump in and try again.
