âAfter learning my flight was detained 4 hours, I heard the announcement: if anyone in the vicinity of gate 4-A understands any Arabic, please come to the gate immediately. Wellâone pauses these days. Gate 4-A was my own gate. I went there. An older woman in full traditional Palestinian dress, just like my grandma wore, was crumpled to the floor, wailing loudly. Help, said the flight service person. Talk to her. What is her problem? We told her the flight was going to be four hours late and she did this. I put my arm around her and spoke to her haltingly. Shu dow-a, shu-biduck habibti, stani stani schway, min fadlick, sho bit se-wee? The minute she heard any words she knewâhowever poorly usedâshe stopped crying. She thought our flight had been canceled entirely. She needed to be in El Paso for some major medical treatment the following day. I said no, no, weâre fine, youâll get there, just late. Who is picking you up? Letâs call him and tell him. We called her son and I spoke with him in English. I told him I would stay with his mother until we got on the plane and would ride next to herâSouthwest. She talked to him. Then we called her other sons just for the fun of it. Then we called my dad and he and she spoke for a while in Arabic and found out, of course, they had ten shared friends. Then I thought just for the heck of it why not call some Palestinian poets I know and let them chat with her. This all took up about 2 hours. She was laughing a lot by then. Telling about her life. Answering questions. She had pulled a sack of homemade mamool cookiesâlittle powdered sugar crumbly mounds stuffed with dates and nutsâout of her bagâand was offering them to all the women at the gate. To my amazement, not a single woman declined one. It was like a sacrament. The traveler from Argentina, the traveler from California, the lovely woman from Laredoâwe were all covered with the same powdered sugar. And smiling. There are no better cookies. And then the airline broke out the free beverages from huge coolersânon-alcoholicâand the two little girls from our flight, one African American, one Mexican Americanâran around serving us all apple juice and lemonade, and they were covered with powdered sugar, too. And I noticed my new best friendâby now we were holding handsâhad a potted plant poking out of her bag, some medicinal thing with green furry leaves. Such an old country traveling tradition. Always carry a plant. Always stay rooted to somewhere. And I looked around that gate of late and weary ones and thought, this is the world I want to live in. The shared world. Not a single person in this gateâonce the crying of confusion stoppedâhas seemed apprehensive about any other person. They took the cookies. I wanted to hug all those other women, too. This can still happen anywhere. Not everything is lost.â

I will always love this post.
I haven't emailed my brother who's on a mission in a while and today he sent me an email that just says "Alma 60:6"
This is my favorite form of missionary communication. A gem Iâve received:
Whatâs the story of abish?
short version: by the power of her faith, cuteness, infodumping, and love for her queen, sheâs basically the reason Ammon was able to spread the gospel to all the Lamanites in Lamoniâs kingdom and beyond.
long version: [cracks knuckles] GLAD U ASKED
ok so, alma 19. ammonâs done his arm-chopping and testimony-bearing, lamoniâs in his conversion coma, queen insists that to her he doth not stink, lovely classic stuff. When lamoni wakes up, he does some testimony bearing of his own before his court, and apparently he does it so powerfully that the ENTIRE MULTITUDE is overcome with the spirit to the point of falling to the earth. So now literally everyone in the palace is in a nifty lil conversion coma.
EXCEPT: Abish. Abish is a palace servant and likely close friend (winky face) of the queen, and she has no need for a conversion coma, cus sheâs already converted due to a âremarkable vision of her fatherââits debatable whether that means a vision her father had or a vision she had about her father. Regardless, Abish believes in Christ and in the religion of the Nephites, and has been living by this faith in secret for probably a really long time.
So when Ammon arrives and starts teaching, sheâs probably super excited but also very waryâin this society thereâs still a risk that she could be killed for anti-traditional beliefs. So then when everyone in this palace hears and listens to the gospel, and begins undergoing the same conversion process as The Actual KingâAbish hits the ceiling. She is SO psyched for the spread of truth. Abish understandably wants to share the good news, come out with this secret sheâs been living, and bring all her friends to learn the gospel, so she runs out of the palace and grabs as many people as she can to come see. HoweverâŚthis doesnât exactly go over well. Cus the rest of the Lamanites donât see a bunch of people undergoing a beautiful spiritual experience, they just see a bunch of people (including the king and queen) unconscious, possibly dead, on the ground. On top of that, thereâs this invading Nephite prince in the middle of them (also unconscious, but that doesnât matter so much to them). On top of that, one of these folks Abish grabbed happens to be the brother of a dude who got his arms chopped off a little bit ago. (Small world, I guess.) And on top of THAT, this brother decides âoh dang, this stranger chopped my broâs arms off and is now lying totally defenseless in front of me, ILL SHOW HIM WHATâS WHATââ draws his sword, raises it above Ammon, and immediately drops dead on the spot.
The multitude freaks the flip out. Flips the freak out. Exceedingly sharp contention on all sides. Abish freaks out and starts crying, this is NOT what she planned, not by a long shot, what has she done what does she do now what can she doâshe does the only thing she can think of, and goes to her queen and gently takes her hand.
The queen instantly jumps up to life, praising Jesus. The king and Ammon and the rest of the palace wake up too, all filled with the Spirit and ultra hype to share their experiences. And this huge multitude, firsthand witnesses to everything, are even more shocked than beforeâbut now theyâre willing to listen.Â
And they listen, and they learn, and before long Lamoniâs ENTIRE KINGDOM is converted. Probably not all by coma, but ya never know. All because Abish couldnât help but want to tell as many people as possible about other people learning about her old secret.
so yeah shes adorable and important and I love her more than anything go read about and appreciate her and tell everybody you know about her, follow her example and grab random people outside and make em come check out the good news. make her the real most distinguished book of mormon icon <3

Hey, do you know that feeling of hitching up a long skirt so you donât fall on your face when walking upstairs, and then you immediately become a wretched yet resolute Jane Austen character? Itâs a universal thing, right?
Itâs like resting a laundry basket against your hip and suddenly youâre a long-suffering peasant woman, wondering if youâll survive the winter.
âShe was so committed to joy and fun and embracing life. She had an Auntie Mame quality to her. I would do crazy things to amuse her on the set. Making her laugh was always a badge of honor.â -Â Mark Hamill
THIS IS THE BEST COMMERCIAL EVER
Iâve reblogged this so many times because I truly think every parent should involve themselves with what their child enjoys.Â
Not to mention this is an act of solidarity. Heâs saying âeven if the entire world is against you, Iâm on your side.â Which I think is important for a kid to know. Heâs refusing to be a bully to his child, even if he doesnât understand.
I work at Hot Topic and we had a white suburban dad in who was buying matching heavy metal/screamo band shirts for him and his teenage daughter and said âTo be honest, I think this stuff sounds like garbage, but she likes it so we listen to it together and weâre going to the concert for Christmas.â And it was just really heartwarming to see him so involved in his childâs life and validating her interests.
I WILL NEVER NOT REBLOG THIS.
âI donât get it, but I love how you love itâ is one of the best things anyone can say. My entire family asks questions about comics because they want to share my enthusiasm for them and support me, even though they otherwise wouldnât pay attention to the industry at all.
I cried when I first saw this
This is amazing and really important
I went though a goth faze in my teens (like most) and I wanted more than anything to paint my room black. My mom was supportive of my personal expression in terms of my clothes and hair and accessories but she was genuinely concerned about the toll a black room would take on my mental health (I was already prone to recurring depression at that point and still am). I begged for months to repaint my room, but she wouldnât budge.
One weekend i spent with my dad and when I came back she had repainted my room. A beautiful deep blue on three walls (my favourite colour), lovely sky blue on the ceiling, and one wall was black. The black wall had been sanded smooth and painted with several coats of chalkboard paint. She gave me a couple boxes of chalk and told me to have at it. I LOVED that black wall and wrote on it every day. I drew on it, I doodled, I wrote out my favourite emo song lyrics, wrote reminders for myself, anything I wanted. It was my favourite part of my room and was something that it would have never occurred to me to ask for. It was something only my very creative and clever mom could have come up with and Iâm still grateful to her for it.
In retrospect, a room of black walls would indeed have been encouraging a reacurrence of my depression and my moms answer was the perfect compromise. That black wall ended up being the most colourful part of my room.
Wow this is really beautiful. You have a great mom

in this house we love, treasure, and support the oxford comma
If you take ALL the commas out of this sentence, you end up with grammarian dragons.
In this house we love treasure and support the Oxford comma.
God did not spend all that time making you, all that time forming every inch of you, putting so much detail into every aspect of you to hear you talk about how ugly or not beautiful you are.
He created you in His image. He created stars, waterfalls, rainbows, flowers, and all other beautiful things. But you were created to look like Him. He thinks youâre beautiful, He didnât make anyone ugly.
The world told us lies about how we need to look. âIf you were thinner, thenâŚâ âIf you were in better shape, thenâŚâ âIf you were taller, darker, lighter, wore more make up, wore less make up, worked out more, changed your hair, covered up those scars and freckles, then youâd be beautiful.â
But they donât get it. They donât know the truth. They donât see that we were all beautifully and fearfully made by the hands of the One who made galaxies, the One who made dogs and cats and all kinds of other adorable things. He made us, and He thinks weâre more beautiful than all of that. You stand in awe of the sunsets he paints, but when was the last time you looked in the mirror and appreciated His handiwork in you? Look in the mirror and get a glimpse of God, He looks just like you.
