Your average graduating veterinary class is about 80+% female. Male graduates still have average higher starting salaries than female graduates. That translates to higher salaries throughout their career.

Same thing for interpreters, like 90% of graduates are women but people prefer to hire men because the male voice is perceived as more authoritative and trustworthy. Plus most speakers are men, so it’s more pleasing to have male interpreters.

Same for art. My prepa class (first year) was mostly female (5 guys for 38 students), yet the prestigious programs we applied to afterwards had a perfect 50/50 ratio of males and females, except perhaps costume design simply because males wouldn’t apply to that at all. Which doesn’t prevent those who do from thriving in it. As for the other fields - like animation for instance - well, i don’t think i know a single female director. This issue was absolutely not talked about.

I’m bringing this back as a reminder that no matter how nicely you ask or what your intentions are it’s still racist and invasive.

No. There isn’t an exception. Don’t do it.

My mom is Russian and didn’t really understand that it’s racist and invasive and bad but once I told her “Mom you can’t DO that” she understood and stopped so you don’t have an excuse to keep asking if black people’s hair is real if you’ve seen this post. You know better now.

It’s almost as if white people say blatantly rude things to people of color that they wouldn’t say to a white person because of racism.

I’m… hesitant to undermine the point of this post, but I’m a person who’s mostly white (quarter Iroquois but I look very white) and I’ve been asked several times if my hair is real (it is). I don’t think it was rude, and they were fairly blunt about it. I think it’s natural human curiosity

You should have been more hesitant. I understand that this is something that people who don’t experience it may struggle to understand, but when we all collectively tell you something is racist, it might behoove you to believe us. 9/10 people ask me if my hair is real before even saying hello to me. It’s the need to authenticate my beauty. Conversely it’s often a need to other black people. We’re considered oddities and our features are unusual. It’s the same line of thinking that had us in zoos but on a smaller scale. Black women collectively are asked this question across the board, across hairstyles, and hairtypes. It happens for a reason. I’m not saying that a white person has never been asked if their hair is real, but it’s happening consistently to us across demographics for a reason. Trying to compare what may happen to you out of general curiosity to something that happens to us regularly and regardless of hairstyle due to racism is a false equivalency and I wish you all wouldn’t do it. Please allow us to be the authorities on our own experiences.

Ultimately I think it stems from a need to authenticate our beauty. White society says we’re not naturally beautiful and therefore before giving us a compliment, white people need to authenticate if we’re actually beautiful or if we bought it. No one ever asked me if my hair was real when my hair was damaged or when it was permed. But when I finally finished transitioning, I couldn’t (and still can’t) leave my house without someone asking if my hair is all mine or if I bought it. Black women with particularly beautiful hair, whether it’s straight, long, or natural, are subjected to these questions because white people find the idea that we could be beautiful to be incredulous. I’ve also noticed that these questions often come when I’m alone or if they’re in a group. People wait until my friends go to the bathroom or walk away to approach me.

Like, it’s not an amateur hobby; you can’t say it doesn’t count because you only march with the white nationalists on weekends to unwind.

Growing up, whenever I faced racism and open hostility for being black and even talented it was always a girl like crispy teigan. Always. Some nonblack/mixed with white girl that no one invested in because they thought her being mixed WAS her talent. And then they’d take it out on me or other black girls who had to DO more.
