Yay!!!
(two small brown bipedal creatures escape from a dropped shoebox) "My druthers!"
So this is not a plea for money. This is something that surprised me, and chatting with people on discord, they were unaware of as well.
Discovered last year I couldnât look at my 2015 MacBook Air without it triggering nausea and migraines, and figured the screen died. Have been getting by on my phone, but concluded I really need a laptop again.
Saved up, realised I could afford a brand new MacBook Neo, and got one.
-And I couldnât spend more than five minutes looking at the screen without massive eye strain, nausea, vertigo, and if I pushed it, I-need-to-lie-down-in-a-dark-room-for-hours migraines.
Looking up MacBook and Eyestrain explained what is going on. The liquid retina displays that Apple currently has uses Pulse Width Modulation or PWM. In order to give the screens a deeper depth of colour and contrast, PWM flickers between several hundred to thousand times a second.
And there is currently no way to turn it off. There are settings and apps to reduce it, but there is no way to stop the screen from flickering. Checked Apple forums, called Apple Support, and the time I could look at the screen kept shrinking. Got the laptop Tuesday, returned it Friday, today is Sunday and Iâm still dealing with a vertigo migraine.
For MacBooks, it seems to vary on the computer model and the software it uses. In retrospect, the issue with my MacBook Air started after a major software update.
And itâs not just an Apple thing. Current Windows and Android screens do the same thing. Thereâs even a Reddit for people who are sensitive to PWM flickers to help find computers and screens that wonât trigger eyestrain and headaches.
So, yeah. This week has been a learning experience. But for those who are prone to headaches and migraines, this may be something to be aware of, cause I was not.

If you are going to an event this holiday season (or ever in the world in your life) and thereâs going to be Somebody there you donât want to talk to, hereâs my advice.
Talk to them first.
Reasoning:
âIf it's your job to eat a frog, it's best to do it first thing in the morning. And if it's your job to eat two frogs, it's best to eat the biggest one first.â Mark Twain. This person is your frog; get it over with!
You will fulfill any obligation to talk to this person and you will have taken the initiative. They cannot complain you ânever talk to themâ or that you are mean/rude if you cordially approach them first.
You have an easy excuse to leave the conversation. âNice to see you, but I still need to say hello to [more pleasant person].â It will be easy to stay in conversation with others for a while, if youâre lucky you wonât have to speak to this Somebody again.
This is the first time I see reasonable advice about this topic on Tumblr. By 'reasonable' I mean something, that doesn't involve acting straight up rude (ignoring the person you don't want to talk to completely, pretending they don't exist, or 'standing up to them' in a way, that will immediately start na argument and ruin everyone's mood) or avoiding family gatherings completely. It is possible to spend time together, even if there's a person you don't like there, without having to talk to them much, but also without openly showing your aversion or acting passive-aggresively.
I dunno what kind of lives other people live where they think âdonât like somebody? Cut them out of your life foreverâ is viable advice.
Maybe I hate Great-aunt Bertha but I really want to attend family Christmas to see my cousins. Maybe I have coworkers or clients or classmates I donât like, but am not interested in quitting my job or dropping a class for a couple of unpleasant people. Maybe I am in the same social circle as somebody I dislike, so thereâs a chance they make an appearance at a party or event.
I see and interact with people I dislike on a regular basis and I develop strategies (like this one) to minimize unpleasantness when ânever see them againâ isnât possible.

it doesnât have to be good it just has to be done
The phrase "They don't want it perfect, they want it Friday" does wonders for my productivity.
I tell this story all the time but I'll tell it again! When I taught kindergarten full time, we had a working bee one weekend where we did a bunch of gardening/landscaping in the outdoor area. One of the dads put up a bit of fencing, then stood back and had a look, kind of frowning like he wasn't sure. His wife then came along, and the following conversation ensued:
Wife: GETMO? Husband: (after a moment, with a sigh) Yeah, GETMO. Me: GETMO? Wife and husband, in perfect unison: Good Enough To Move On
Absolutely LIFE CHANGING acronym, friends and enemies.
A sick wizard castle with a nondescript van painted on the side. A gothy pin-up girl with the portrait of a random trucker tattooed on her thigh. A bathroom-themed beach vacation. A beautiful brightly coloured cupcake that tastes like soap.
Jesus with a portrait of my grandma on his wall. A scimitar-wielding fantasy protagonist reading about the adventures of sixth-grader Kelsey. A National Park with a framed print of somebodyâs living room.
There was a thunderstorm last and, of course, there is now an earthwurmm in the middle of my kitchen.
The crime scene investigation begins. Was it Malice, the Meatball Supreme? Or No Bones Jones, Mayhem Jane?
Or was it, perhaps, the Wyrmsinger himself???
who brought woims into my kitchen
Malice (dry paws, angelic expression)
Mayhem (madness in her eyes, three fully functional legs)
Vice (Wet beans, sang the Wyrmsong last night)
Your Honor, I move to dismiss the entire case on the grounds of a mistrial. The prosecutor has prejudiced the jury against my client with the presentation of circumstantial evidence and usage of an unsubstantiated epithet!
Your Honor, circumstantial evidence is admissible in our jurisdiction and can be the basis for a criminal conviction, so long as the circumstantial proof facilitates reasonable inferences of causation, not mere speculation. People v Wang, 505 Mich 239, 251 (2020). Furthermore, calling the defendant by his legal name and by his known alias is not per se prejudicial, and must be subject to the balancing test described in MRE 403. The probative value of this alias in a case of malicious woim depositing is substantially outweighed by any potential prejudice. Please see People v Thompson, 101 Mich App 609, 613; 300 NW2d 645 (1980). And to preempt a potential hearsay objection about the admissibility of the Wyrmsong itself, this statement is not hearsay, as it is the statement of an opposing party, admissible under MRE 801(d)(2).
Though the jury deliberated for a full twenty-four hours, the jurors--five thousand three hundred and twenty six peers selected to serve in this case-- were unable to render a unanimous verdict. Therefore, we have no choice but to declare a mistrial, and the defendants are returned to custody to await retrial.
Though I think we've narrowed down who the real masterminds are ...
but on the real though, here is your guide to assyrian rice preparation from your friendly neighborhood assyrian:
start wanting rice. (or, if you are traditional, simply recognize your constant desire for rice.)
measure out two cups of rice. then one more. then two more. then another. this seems fine. you love rice. there is no way that this will backfire on you.
remember that your great-great-uncleâs recipe says it should be soaked overnight.
become consumed with despair.
decide to soak it for half an hour instead, acknowledging that the final product will be inferior and anger your ancestors but will still satisfy your now almost-overwhelming need for rice to be inside your body much faster.
remember that you should have set the water to boil when you soaked the rice. goddammit.Â
once the water boils, put the rice in until it is half-cooked. the eyeballing or intuitive method is less effective than a timer but thatâs how your aunt does it so you feel compelled to meet her standards.
now that the rice has fluffed up, realize how much rice six dry cups really is. holy shit. youâve fucked up immeasurably.Â
take a minute to dwell upon your failings.
grease a baking dish with butter. this will never be as elegant as you want it to and your fingers will get greasy, but the slightly shameful, self-indulgent joy of licking your fingers afterwards will make up for it.
pour the rice into the dish. wonder immediately if you actually buttered the dish beforehand and if youâve just fucked up.Â
melt approximately one thousand pounds of butter in the microwave and pour it over the rice, pondering your imminent death from rapid-onset arterial clogging. put a small pat of butter on the top to properly gild the lily.
put your pan into the oven, which you have absolutely preheated after your previous lack of foresight. shake the rice once or twice while it bakes to make sure the butter is well distributed. resist the impulse to climb into the oven with the rice. for the last ten minutes, sit next to the oven and count the seconds until itâs done.
remove the dish from the oven. shed a tear or two at the perfection laid before you. if you are dining with others, this is the time to serve the rice while making passive-aggressive statements about how oh no, you donât need any help, you just made dinner all by yourself, you can serve everyone as well. (this is still fun if done alone, but optional.)
CONSUME THE RICE.
realize that you have eaten half of the dish in one sitting. no matter how much rice you made, this will always happen.Â
put the leftovers away, if there are any, and enjoy a cup of chai while marveling at the amount of food you have just eaten. if possible, fall asleep in an armchair, sitting up, head tilted slightly back, like a grandpa.
for the rest of the evening, think fondly of how much rice you have in the fridge now and how many meals it will supplement, refusing to acknowledge that you will almost certainly eat the rest of it in a few hours for a midnight meal.
i really played myself with this post huh. every time it gets a note i start wanting rice.
for anyone who wants it, here is my familyâs actual recipe for assyrian baked rice:
1lb / approx. 2 â cups basmati rice (any long-grain rice will do)
3 tbsp salt
8 tbsp / 1 stick butter (you can reduce this if you donât want to have a heart attack)
Put the rice in a pot and cover it in cold water and salt. Let it soak overnight. (If you donât have the time to soak it, rinse the rice with cold water until it runs clear.)
Edit: The reason you want to soak basmati and other aromatic rice before cooking is to preserve more acetylpyrroline, the compound that gives aromatic rice its characteristic scent and flavor. Soaking rice allows the grains to absorb water, which reduces the cooking time, which means less time for the acetylpyrroline to cook off. Itâll still taste pretty good if you canât do this, but you donât want âpretty goodâ, you want mind-blowing, so for that perfect flavor youâll want to soak your rice overnight. The soaking process also washes away the layer of starch on the outside of the rice, which allows the grains to separate rather than sticking together; this is why you want to rinse your rice thoroughly if you donât have time to soak it.
Preheat your oven to 325°.
Boil three quarts of water in a separate pot. Once itâs at a fast boil, drain the rice and add it to the water. Boil for 5-7min or until one grain tastes half-cooked, but not soft. Pour the rice into a colander and rinse with cold water.
Edit: This step also helps get rid of any remaining starch on your grains, for perfectly separated rice. If your colander or strainer has large holes, you can put a paper towel/cheesecloth/clean dishcloth on the inside in order to drain your rice. Pour carefully if youâre using a paper towel, though, and put a bowl underneath your colander; I once lost a heartbreaking amount of rice when my paper towel got oversaturated and tore open.
Liberally grease the bottom of your baking pan with some of your butter. Pour the rice on top. Melt the rest of the butter in the microwave and pour on top of the rice.
Bake for 45min. (If you like, cover the rice for part or all of the baking time, but I find it gets less crispy on top if you do this.) Shake the pan a couple times during baking to ensure that the butter distributes throughout the entire dish.
Eat.
Serves four. Can easily be scaled up if needed (or down, but why would you do that?). Best enjoyed with a nice cup of chai.

this is from a real diary by a 13-year-old girl in 1870. teenage girls are awesome and theyâve always been that way.
Read this - oh my goodness, this girl was wonderful.
Where can I read this in full?
Itâs from Real American Girls Tell Their Own Stories, and that particular section is by Martha Carey Thomas who grew up to be a suffragist, linguist and renowned educator, as well as a badass lesbian.
I really truly love historical sources like this, because they are absolutely invaluable in tackling the meninist argument that womens these days have gotten all uppity and forgotten their god-assigned role of being the good-lady-woman (bangmaid). that whole rhetoric lies on the (false) assertion that some magic, golden period of the past exists in which women enjoyed their oppression, or, better yet, were unaware that they were oppressed at all, and the ânatural stateâ of things (patriarchy) functioned harmoniously.
we need more accounts like this that show rhat women have always been People and have always been aware that how theyâre treated is unfair and wrong. women have always craved freedom, intellectual fulfillment, the right to self-determination; we have never been ok with just being mindless servants.
Daddy Long-Legs: unlike spiders, these arachnids can eat solid food, and they have an omnivorous diet that includes mushrooms, berries, and seeds, along with invertebrate prey
Harvestmen, otherwise known as daddy long-legs (not to be confused with the cellar spiders of family Pholcidae, which are also described as daddy long-legs) bear a striking resemblance to spiders, but they actually belong to a separate order of arachnids known as Opiliones. These strange-looking creatures have eight legs, but only two eyes, and their body segments are largely fused together, giving the body a noticeably rounded, pill-like appearance.
Above: Metagryne bicolumnata, commonly known as the bunny harvestman
There are roughly 6,700 known species of harvestman, but researchers estimate that a total of more than 10,000 species may currently exist. Their physical features vary greatly from one species to the next; some harvestmen have crab-like claws, spikes, thorny legs, elongated bodies, colorful features, or cryptic markings. Most of them are equipped with long, spindly legs, but there are some that have shorter, stockier limbs instead.
Above: Megabunus diadema and two unidentified species from family Sclerosomatidae
Unlike spiders, harvestmen have an omnivorous diet that includes fungi, fruit pulp, seeds, pollen, lichen, algae, and invertebrate prey, and they are capable of consuming solid food, whereas spiders are typically carnivorous and feed only on fluids.
Above: a harvestman from genus Chasenella munching on a mushroom-cap
As this article explains:
Harvestmen consume mushrooms, fruit pulp, seeds, and seed appendages more frequently than spiders probably because they are âsolid food feeders," which means they can ingest solid tissues by biting off small pieces. In turn, spiders are âfluid feedersâ and feed on vegetable matter most frequently in the form of fluids (e.g. nectar, stigmatic exudate, plant sap, and honey dew) rather than fungal or plant tissues.
Above: genus Marthana
When given a choice between fresh fruit or invertebrate prey, some harvestmen actually prefer the fruit:
Schaus et al. carried out a feeding trial in which the Neotropical harvestman Erginulus clavotibialis was given a choice between fresh pineapple and live invertebrate prey. This harvestman demonstrated a distinct preference for fruit over the invertebrate prey.
Above: Dentobunus quadridentatus
Harvestmen are also much more social than spiders, and the males of some species have been known to engage in paternal care, which is a trait that rarely occurs among arthropods:
Single fatherhood is the rarest form of parental care in nature. Still, males are often the sole caretakers of progeny among a number of species of daddy long-legs, also known as harvestmen. In these species, fathers are exclusively responsible for guarding eggs that females lay on the undersides of leaves; the males remain on the eggs nearly constantly for months.
Above: several harvestman eggs and a young hatchling
When threatened, harvestmen often bob up and down erratically in an effort to confuse their attackers. They also have several other defense mechanisms, including pungent, foul-tasting secretions, the ability to "play dead," and autotomy, which is the ability to discard one or more of their own limbs in order to escape from predators.
Above: the photo at the top shows an unidentified harvestman from family Cosmetidae, while the photo on the bottom shows a species from genus Gnomulus
Harvestmen are completely harmless to humans. Their mouthparts are far too small to penetrate human skin, and contrary to popular belief, they do not have the "world's deadliest venom" -- in fact, they don't produce any venom at all.
