Imagine you are Adrian, you are childhood sweet hearts turned loving married couple with the smartest most handsome silliest eridian you know, the love of your life, tune to your melody, Rocky.
But Erid is dying, eridani is slowly dimming, thankfully your planet is insulated and you have time and heat to make enough astrophage to use as fuel to create your worlds first foray into the intergalactic (and space in GENERAL). Your beautiful silly smart mate is a renound engineer, so he volunteers to go into the unknown, where you can't even see because eco location renders you blind in deep space. He leaves but thankfully has company with the other 30~ eridians including his best friend whom you also cherish.
Years go by. Then more years go by. And more. Almost 50 years past and the entire planet hasn't heard back from the crew of the blip-a. Your partner has died in deep space, or at least that's what everyone tells you. They tell you to move on but you can't. You spend your days looking up into the deep space that took your Rocky from you. You mourn.
THEN BAM!!! ALIEN SPACE SHIP IN ORBIT???? HELLO??????? The incredulity of it almost stuns you, but then they tell you. They tell you Rocky is here, he came home. He was the only one to survive. Everyone else died beside him, and he was stuck for 47 years, alone, orbiting a foreign star, with nothing but psychological tormenting silence and the corpses of his crew.
But he came back to you, with an alien. An alien who is dying.
So much is happening and when you finally reunite with Rocky, he is changed. Different, burned broken carapace, strange grammatical structure, alien body language, traumatized, and completely unequivocally co dependent and attached to this tall lanky squishy dying alien.
So you do what you do best, you throw yourself into helping create a massive bio dome for the alien and find a solution for its starvation and slow death, and throughout it all slowly get to know Ryland Grace the alien, and see how much Rocky loves him, how he can't sleep without him, how Rocky always listens to his heart beat.
Maybe at first, if you admit it, you're even jealous.
But time passes, and you learn Grace is silly, and smart, and maybe a bit too leaky to be handsome but he sure can be cute.
And then you all fall in love and everything is great and they literally saved the universe and the alien lives with you now, also you might be a cradle robber but Grace says he's well withing maturity for his species so honestly you're just not really gonna think about that rn.
Happened to my friend Adrian the Eridian once.

Morally grey Rocky who edits Grace's genes without permission. Maybe he read about CRISPR-Cas on the portable earth thinking machine, and realised that he could possibly, feasibly, extend his human's life span beyond the expected range. Making sure the cells' telomeres are replenished, filtering out free radicals, keeping his human on a healthy diet, he wants to try it all. Maybe he figures out how to make it work- after all, they've got Grace's DNA right here for production of those me-burgers. Grace has expressed before that he doesn't want to experiment with himself like that, it's too risky, too much of a change to scramble up his fundamental building parts and kill him right there, and even though he isn't religious anymore, it feels wrong to play god like that. Rocky doesn't like that. Can't accept that. Grace is the best thing that happened to him, and he can't allow his human to die before they get to spend proper time together. Getting the new genome into Grace is a massive undertaking, and unfortunately cannot be executed while keeping the human ignorant. But what needs to be done has to be done. So he harvests stem cells, Grace under anaesthetic with the excuse of some other, non-invasive, low-risk exploration. He edits them. But then he has to put them back in to Grace, needs them to override the original cells. And there's no easy way to do that. He develops chemotherapy specifically to eradicate Grace's cells so he can replace them. It leaves the human horribly ill, nearly iller than he was on their last leg of the journey to Erid, and miserable. But it has to be done. Grace isn't stupid, but he doesn't exactly know what's going on. He just knows that he's getting ill and that he needs treatment, but he doesn't know that the 'treatment' is the cause, that it's on purpose. When the chemotherapy is sufficient, the new and improved stem cells get introduced, and then it's a waiting game. Grace is closely monitored, so Rocky knows that the cells are successfully transplanted and doing their work, but up until this point it has all been theoretical. This could kill Grace. But Rocky knows that it won't, because his intelligence and craftsmanship and the team of Eridians he's manipulated into working on this with him will not fail him. Grace will live. He just has to wait and see. And wait for Grace to realise that he's not the same human he once was, realise that he was used as a very precious lab rat. Grace may not want to talk to Rocky anymore once he figures it out. But that'll be okay, because Rocky will have until that point to be around Grace, and, Grace will still be on Erid, so he will never truly be out of Rocky's hearing. In every scenario, Rocky wins.

Fuck ever news outlet for naming the murderer and blasting his face all over the internet, but the trans woman he murdered is never shown and only referred to as "transgender woman."
Her name was Juniper Blessing, and she was just doing her laundry.
Hello,
I am Jaafar from Gaza. I am currently in northern Gaza, and we have not yet been displaced to the south. Things are very difficult here â the cost of moving to the south is $1,000, and a single tent also costs $1,000, if we can even find a place in southern Gaza. The south is overcrowded, and renting a plot of land costs $1,000 per month, or even more depending on the area. đđą
I started a donation campaign in the middle of the war and received good support, but due to personal circumstances, I recently created a new link, and unfortunately, I have only received a small amount of donations so far. đđ I appeal to you to help me with my new campaign and donate whatever you can đ„șđ. Every amount you give will save the lives of my family and me and may help us cover the cost of moving to southern Gaza! đ Thank you, and I pray that God blesses you and provides for you đ§Ąđ«
Here is the donation link âŹïž**

Ideally I'd make a post like "It is pride month! Yay! :D" ...But it is getting increasingly hard to exist as a trans person, let alone celebrate it.
We should still celebrate it. That celebration doesn't need to be loud. It doesn't need to be noticed by anyone except yourself.
They want us to feel shame at who we are. They want others to fear what we are. Pride in yourself is the antithesis of shame. So please, now more than ever, make sure you celebrate pride. Celebrate you.
You are worth celebrating. Happy pride.

Imagine if you met someone who can't eat watermelon. Not that they're allergic or unable somehow, but they just haven't figured out how to do that. So you're like "what the hell do you mean? it works just like eating anything else, you open your mouth, sink your teeth in, take a bite and chew. If you can bite, chew and swallow, you should be able to eat a watermelon."
And they agree that yes, they do know how to eat, in theory. The problem is the watermelon. Surely, if they figured out where to start, they'd figure out how to do it, but they have no clue how to get started with it.
This goes back and forth. No, it's not an emotional issue, they're not afraid of the watermelon. They can eat any other fruit, other sweet things, and other watery things ("it's watery?" they ask you). Is it the colour? Do they have a problem eating things that are green on the outside and red on the inside?
"It's red on the inside?"
Wait, they've never seen the inside? At this point you have to ask them how, exactly, they eat the watermelon. So to demonstrate, they take a whole, round, uncut watermelon, and try to bite straight into it. Even if they could bite through the crust, there's no way to get human jaws around it.
"Oh, you're supposed to cut it first. You cut the crust open and only chew through the insides."
And they had no idea. All their life this person has had no idea how to eat a watermelon, despite of being told again and again and again that it's easy, it's ridiculous to struggle with something so simple, there's no way that someone just can't eat a watermelon, how can you even mange to be bad at something as fucking simple as eating watermelon.
If someone can't do something after being repeatedly told to "just do it", there might be some key component missing that one side has no idea about, and the other side assumed was so obvious it goes without mention.
Yep.
https://drmaciver.substack.com/p/how-to-do-everything had a nice list of additional examples like this, with (non-)obvious major insights with regard to opening stitched bags, cleaning your bathroom floor, using a search engine, catching a ball, pinging somebody, proving a theorem, playing sudoku, passing as ânormalâ, improving your writing, generating novel ideas, and solving your problem.
If youâd asked me six months ago how to get better at something, Iâd probably have pointed you to how to do hard things. I still think this is a good approach and you should do it, but I now think itâs the wrong starting point and Iâve been undervaluing small insights. [...]
I think my revised belief is that if you are stuck at how to get better at something, spend a little while assuming thereâs just some trick to it youâve missed. You can try to generate the trick yourself, but itâs probably easier to learn it by observing someone else being good at the thing, asking them some questions, and seeing if you have any lightbulb moment.
My fiance played the clarinet when he was in school. When he was first learning to play, he rented an instrument from the school to learn on. He was the last chair clarinet, had been for years, because he could not make notes that required the register key. For years, they kept making him do embrature exercises and he started to get a few notes, with lots of effort. Eventually he had to get private lessons to stay in band.
Every time he tells me this story, his frustration by this point in the story, years later, is evident. He still sounds frustrated by it, despite all the time that passed. Teachers had been giving him crap for years because he hadn't been making much progress with the instrument.
When he got to the private instructor, she acknowledged his frustration, and asked him to try to play for her. He did, and she saw all he was doing. She then did something no one else had done before. She asked him to put his mouthpiece on a different clarinet and try to play the same notes. Like magic, it worked. She looked at the clarinet he had been using and found that the school's clarinet needed it's pads replaced.
He went from last chair to first chair nearly overnight, having been taught far more techniques than typically taught at that age just to overcome the broken instrument preventing him from making noise.
Sometimes you don't need to brute force a problem. Sometimes your clarinet is just broken.
Not quite sure why the clarinet addition got me crying, but here you go people: just in case, let's get you some new pads.
maybe this is not my place to say because I am monolingual, and I'm sure it's part of a larger, more nuanced discussion about visibility and accessibility on the internet, but I think it'd be cool if people posted in their native languages more instead of in english. I see people do it way more on other platforms than on tumblr which is almost exclusively in english

An elephant casually stealing and then returning a wildlife photographerâs hatÂ
(Source)
He doesnât just steal it though. He puts it on his own head. He takes it, tries it on, looks around (I swear like heâs going âLook look Iâm a Human! Donât I look good in my Human head-thing?â) then gives it back. There is so much playful and good-natured intelligence in this one gesture Iâm losing my mind here. Elephants are too freaking good for us.Â
This is a very small thing but that means, to an elephant, the top of their head is where they put the hat. That is not what Iâd consider the top of their head lol.
Theyâre placing the hat right over their eyes, like how we wear them
