another weird thing about getting old is that these ancient dudes that were in TV shows and movies when I was a kid now look... hot? like I get it now. They were stars for a reason.

twenty years across the sea
Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003)
wild thing about all those "why are people over 30 still in fandom" posts is that the idea of fandom (in the sense of writing fic etc) being a youth subculture or even a hobby that was particularly accepting of young people is insanely recent, like, last 20 years at most. prior to that not only was fandom overwhelmingly both driven and populated by people well into adulthood, but if you were a teen trying to write or discuss fic on livejournal or usenet you almost certainly avoided telling people your age, not only because that was general best practice for minors on the internet at the time but because you'd have felt very out of place if all those grownups had known you were a kid, and in fact there's a good chance they would have banned you from whatever community you were trying to participate in. the way that state of affairs managed to get memory-holed so completely we've transitioned to one where a lot of people think fanfiction is and has always been a hobby for teenagers that some unusually childish adults just never grow out of is genuinely bizarre

Jelly, buddy as someone who knows next to nothing about Star Trek, please tell me whatβs happening
ok so spock/kirk is like. the oldest ship ever, okay? they invented slash fiction. these guys pioneered fandom as we know it today
in the last movies they made with those original characters, they were separated into like. alternate universes. okay. these guys were never gonna see each other again and it was very sad and tragic and the fans were kinda sad about it but it is what it is.
then. they made a short film. right. like 8 minutes long. of kirk reuniting with spock. on spocks deathbed. and kirk holds his hand, and they look off into the sunset together.
they got to be reunited. they got to be together in the end. they got their romantic ending i swear to god im losing it.
if it helps. imagine if in 50 years time, they released an 8 minute video of old man dean winchester going to the empty and saving castiel and then they sat on the hood of the impala holding hands and watching the sun set. thats what its like. you see how insane that is??? do you get it???
Look at it from Spock's experience. He learns that Kirk had died twice; when the Nexus ribbon damaged the Enterprise B on it's shakedown cruise, and then learning about how Kirk returned to the 24th century, only to die again saving the galaxy from the machinations of Dr. Soran.
Also living with the knowledge that he wasn't present for either moments; he was absent from the launch of the 1701B, and, in the 24th century, he was on Romulus, working on reunification, missing two opportunities to see Jim Kirk for one last time.
You're now trying to save Romulus, when you've created a new dimension, where you run into a young Jim Kirk, but he's not your Jim Kirk, so you spend the rest of your days establishing a colony for the displaced Vulcans, and resigned to a life knowing you'll never see him again.
The days move past and you feel the clock getting closer to stopping, and in those final moments, he approaches your bed...
...Your t'hy'la, reaches out and takes your hand, to allow you experience this simple feeling, for one last time.
