Seems legit
we all hear about kudzu being introduced as "erosion control" in the South but I don't think contemporary people understand on a gut level what that means
these are images from a 1930s pamphlet that endorsed kudzu, entitled "stop gullies: save your farm"
It was Bad.
Invasive plants need to be understood as part of a much larger cycle of incredible violence against the land.
For context: erosion on that scale occurred as a result of our clear-cutting entire states. The land east of the Mississippi used to be covered in old-growth forest to an extent that we literally canât imagine anymore, because most of us have never seen a forest over 100 years old. It turns out if you remove all vegetation from a landscape, you end up with a bunch of loose soil ready to move downstream. A fast-growing plant that covers everything in dense vegetation sounds like salvation when youâre surrounded by 40-foot deep gullies that get wider with every rainstorm.
It must be emphasized that scientific agronomy began less than 200 years ago, with Justus von Liebigâs studies of plant nutrition, and went down many blind alleys in its first hundred years. Europeans had brought to the Americas crops and practices which were not suited to the land, and which they tried to make work by main force. They also brought ideas which did not suit the conditions, such as, that if land would not grow trees it would not grow crops.
Many people today would like to say, âthey should have taken guidance from indigenous practices!â But those practices succeeded in supporting perhaps four million people in the entire vast land area we now refer to as the USA and Canada, one per cent of the current figure. Worse still, the native peoples were constantly engaged in brutal and often genocidal warfare, which served to keep their populations down to the level that could be supported by their food supplies. Even people with no preâconceived notions of their own superiority would have questioned the value of such examples.
Today we live in a world of eight thousand million humans. In such a world, to protect biodiversity and leave any land at all untouched by human use requires intensive agriculture, interâregional trade in foodstuffs, refrigeration and other modes of food preservation, and the use of synthetic chemistry to substitute for nonâfood crops. The crucial question that we must face is this : is âsustainabilityâ, which means longâterm survival, only possible at a low level of material culture with small populations, or can we beat Parson Malthusâ game?
Dear white people with fucking braincells,
Do not be like the idiot above. They say that there were only 4 million people in the Americas before European colonization? Nope!
âthere is a general consensus that the Indigenous population in the Americas was nearly 100 million people at the time of Spanish contact.â
- Williams, Charlotte. 2023. 'Estimating Populations of the Americas pre-1492'. Dispossessions in the Americas. https://dia.upenn.edu/en/content/WilliamsC003/
Dispossessions in the Americas
And genocidal warfare? Iâm sorry?
The indigenous peopleâs of Turtle Island are people. Historically, our cultures have engaged in both warfare and peaceful diplomacy. In the tens of thousands of years that we have lived on that land has something that we may call genocide ever occurred?
Yeah, I mean, probably.
But there is no evidence of a pattern of constant warfare or genocidal behavior which is what the fuckwit above me claims. Perhaps they mixed up my culture and their own.
Next time you want to dismiss indigenous knowledge out of hand why donât you try getting your own fucking facts right? Before you call 100 million murdered natives and their descendants bloodthirsty savages?

With the 250th anniversary it's likely to be especially bad this year!
Human: Deal.
Fey: Very well. When you return home tonight, your mother will be in pristine health again. It will be like she never fell ill at all. Even the memory of her suffering will fadeâŚ
Human: Thank you so much. She means everything to me.
Fey: I know, I know. Letâs hope the price wasnât too much for you after all⌠Only time will tell.
Human: So, when do we start?
Fey: âŚIf I may ask you to elaborate?
Human: You said you wanted my firstborn.
Fey: Yes? And you agreed?
Human: Yeah, so, when do we start?
Fey:
Fey, blushing: Ah.
So good. It deserved some art. đ

The thing they don't tell you about dealing with ADHD is that sometimes when you really, really don't want to do something you absolutely need to do your brain will suddenly lift the barriers stopping you from cleaning or doing other chores you've been struggling to finish, and so you have to run around stopping yourself from doing all the dishes or laundry or deep cleaning the bathroom despite needing to because you do not have time for that right now, you absolutely have to do this other task, and the whole time it feels awful because you've needed to do all the rest of that too for a while and you couldn't, but you can nowâonly no, you can'tâand yeah you can come back to all that after you do your thing you don't wanna do, but then you'll be back in "I can't do this" mode because you don't have another task to avoid, so you just have to accept it and it sucks.
Brought to you by me not wanting to make phone calls so badly I had to actively stop myself from doing like seven other chores, which felt like being hunted for sport.

Delicious. We love to see it.

Ultimately, she spent 20 hours redoing the copy from scratch â and with her $100-per-hour rate, that meant her client was shelling out $2,000 for copy that likely would have ended up being far cheaper had a human just written it in the first place.
I love stories like this.

âThe Shonen Protagonist joins The Organizationâ is such a cheap and easy hack for framing a narrative because the author never has to come up with a reason why the protagonist gets involved in each arc. Itâs just that The Organization has a new Mission for the protagonist every time and the protagonist gets to say, âRighteo, thanks plot for telling me what to go do.â
Which makes Fullmetal Alchemist so much funnier because Edward Elric very very much does join The Organization. Heâs in fact quite famous for joining The Organization. Where The Organization is a hostile fascist dictatorship with immense military power which is good at both giving orders and punishing defectors.
And yet over the course of the series Edward is so allergic to ever being told what to do that he in fact never ever goes on an Organization-Ordered Mission. And the exactly one time The Organization DID try to tell him what to do Edward hated it so much he fucked off and impaled himself at the bottom of a mineshaft about it.
writing is so funny because i could write nonstop for 9hrs and then hit a block where im like "how do i transition between this moment and the next?" and then i just dont touch it for 6 months
Serious advice tho if this happens, it's likely because you already wrote past the end of the scene and wandered too far from the more logical transition point, and you should go back to the last time the writing felt "unforced" and cut everything after.
You can also just skip the transition. Really good writing can span years in a single sentence, like you can just authoritatively state fact and your reader will go with it.
This is GOLD! You just saved me like thousands of therapy costs lmao
When I was writing my fic last few months the strategy I used was "just skip all the scenes I don't want to write" and it worked great in my opinion
wow! your understanding of this character is so. . . Unique! just wondering by the way but when was the last time you directly interacted with the source media

this reads like it was submitted to a local newspaper in the early 1900s
Tip:
When it comes to stuff like racism, sexism, homophobia, etc, Iâve found itâs usually way better to think to yourself âI donât want to beâ than âIâm notâ.
I.e. if someone goes âthat thing you just did is ableistâ, instead of going âIâm not ableist, I donât hate disabled people!â itâs usually a lot better to go âI donât want to be ableist, I should rethink what Iâm doing/saying/etc in light of that factâ. Because that shifts your thinking so rather than jumping straight into denial and attempts to defend your character, youâre instead more inclined to look at how your actions could be misrepresenting your intentions. Or whether youâve overlooked something, been callous, or acted in ignorance.
