"there's no way toby can wrap all this up in just 2 chapters!"

Oh easy mistake. Yearning actually rises from the floor and longing hangs from the ceiling

Family in Buffalo genuinely just asked me if I would rather go to âAdolfâsâ or âNine Elevenâ for lunch and they were being completely sincere
So I looked into this bc I was bored (and initially thought you meant Buffalo, CO) and both of these names are so innocently unfortunate
Adolfâs opened in 1934 (WWII wouldnât start until 1939) and Nine-Eleven opened in 1981 (9/11 was in 2001)
Imagine a devastating mass shooting was perpetrated by five guys so we all just colloquially called it âFive Guysâ and now the burger joint CEO is sat there like
the koi in the koi pond waiting for you to feed them the food pebbles
i think about this post at least once a week
that's what fanta bottles look like now? they look like they need to pee
Im enjoying the longevity of tumblrs recontextualization style of humor. a seemingly innocuous post followed by like "posts that a gnome would make" or like "are you a phone"
More from the notes:
I love this post

Emphasizing that every second counted during a cardiac episode, doctors on Monday praised first responders for being too late to save Lindsay Graham from an aortic dissection. âParamedics had a very short window to save Sen. Graham, and thankfully they did not make it in time,â said George Washington University Hospital cardiologist Dr. Eric Fallstaff, who suggested that EMTs should receive special commendations for arriving at the four-term Republican senatorâs house long after they could have successfully delivered life-saving care.

This show is an accurate portrayal of how artists are hopeless dumbasses and we need a producer type to bring us back to earth to get anything meaningful done and Iâm here for it
You know, when I've remarked that a lot of the responses to my posts feel like people are just plucking out keywords they think they recognise based on the shape of them and replying to what they imagine the post says based on that, the possibility never occurred to me that this is actually how many American schools are currently teaching kids to read.
Like, my assumption this whole time has been that when folks go "I misunderstood this post that says [thing] as saying [unrelated thing] because I mistook [word] for [completely different word that happens to start with the same letter]", that was a bit. What do you mean they're teaching kids a reading method that's tailored to produce this exact error?
Three cueing. Once you learn about it, a whole lot of very frustrating online discourse with US Americans makes so much sense đ
For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have
Reading through this actually gives a good perspective on how self perpetuating the problem is, too. I know the knee-jerk reaction from someone taught a phonics heavy reading method might be âWhy the fuck would they do that. Learning Words is so much more efficient in the long termâ, because that was my reaction the first time I heard about this vague topic a while back.
And like, as stated in the article, it is more efficient in the long run to take the phonics approach.
But the nasty thing about being taught cueing from a young age is that thereâs basically just. No getting significantly better at reading without going back to basics? Because theyâre learning a shortcut to âfiguring outâ sentences before knowing the fundamentals, which is pretty universally (in most fields) the Worst Way to get important lessons to stick.
Itâs the literary equivalent of teaching kids to just use a calculator to figure out math and then wondering why, a few years later, those same kids are free styling algebra and fumbling 70% of problems pretty consistently.
I love getting unaccompanied minors (kids flying alone) who so clearly just. Don't want to be here lol. Sometimes I get to know a little of their story, like their parents are divorced, or a family member died and they're heading to the funeral, but usually they just don't want to talk about it and that's fine. But I always treat the flight like it's a challenge to make them smile. I offer them snacks and soda but that's never enough, that's whatever, they could get those from an airport vending machine. Chump change. So then I tell the worst jokes. Just the most embarrassing, kindergarten teacher, annoying dad jokes you can think of. And those always get a groan, or a "Seriously??" And that's my in! Now I can say "Why, what's your idea of a good joke? No, come on hotshot, make your best joke, let's see it." And they hem and they haw but of course they eventually tell me their very best joke because kids are little competitive comedy goldmines. And it's always super funny, so I laugh, and that's where they slip up. Because you know what you almost always do when your joke successfully makes someone laugh? You smile. And I'm like. Gotcha. Rookie move. Now you're going to end up having a good time in spite of yourself. I win.
Did this with an 11yo u.m. today and he said "What did the ghost say to the other ghost?" And I said "What?" "Nothing. Ghosts aren't real."
I'm literally a flight attendant, offering snacks and drinks is my job
