Every time I see a take thatโs like โdurge is the correct way to play bg3 story wise if you want a custom characterโ or similar takes that are all like โlarian should have stuck to their original plan and made durge the only available custom character tav is pointlessโ it makes me wanna continue my durge playthrough less as someone who leans towards preferring tav for the freedom. I like durge donโt get me wrong but itโs a set backstory and story just like all the other origins.
Like I think part of why bg3 is so good is that you have both options!! As someone who plays Skyrim and avoids the dragonborn stuff as much as possible Iโm so happy I have a choice where I can truly just fuck around and do what I want! Sure you donโt get as much/any unique scenes to your character but i donโt mind. It just means I can play origins (including durge) for extra content!
Like durge is great but itโs a set backstory and character. Like even the evil path as durge you are evil in a specific way. If you are evil youโre mostly evil in the way Baal tells you to be. Maybe you wanna be evil but not a murder hobo! Having the options for tav and origins just, makes it a lot bigger.
Especially when all the companions have these big deal backstories itโs kinda fun to play as truly just Some Guy who got wrapped up in all of this.
anyone who claims Larian's intent regarding that is objectively incorrect. Tav was the original custom character, the Dark Urge was added later in development. Larian added species-specific dialogue that has to be a Tav (Halfling, Drow) before the Dark Urge was developed.
evil Tavs exist, no reason Tav can't be a fresh lich or have Vecna's eye or be a devout Cyricist. i've read and/or played all of these and they're fantastic.
also really funny that folk who glaze Durge playthroughs like to minimize the horrors but that's another post...
In the Dropped Frames appearance on July 23, 2023, Sven Vincke was explicit that the custom character (Tav) was the intended to be played as canon (or primary if thatโs more specifically correct.).
The exact quote was โWe add these origin characters for replay value. That said, thereโs nothing wrong with picking an origin. Itโs just that the entire origin system is about where do you put the camera? In whose head do you put the camera?โ
I think everyone should love what they love. I think for people who are more used to video games as opposed to the freedom of RPGโs, I think the origins, including Durge, are great.
What gets confusing is that early scripts had ALL the companions have something like the โurgeโ. There are voice files of Gale digging through โsweet meatsโ.. aka guts, in a very โDurge-yโ voice,
