It's your turn, artists! Sign-ups for The 2026 Dragon Age Big Bang are open NOW through EOD August 10th.
From light-hearted backstories, to daring adventures across Thedas, to epic, spicy smut, our writers have been hard at work on over eighty different fanfics - there is a story to suit every taste!
๐กNew This Year: The sign-up will ask for your top six (6) pitches!
Check out the Artist Participation Guide and review the info under the cut if you're interested in collaborating with a writer to create an illustration for a Dragon Age fanfic, then:
โจClick Here to View Pitches & Sign Upโจ
Artist Participation Guidelines:
This is an abbreviated list. The full requirements are on the Artist Guide page.
You will produce a polished illustration tangibly inspired by the fanfiction youโre paired with.
What does tangibly inspired mean? You can choose to depict:
๐ the featured characters
๐ a specific scene from the fic
๐ a broader, more symbolic illustration, like might be used for a book cover
What route you take is up to you! Youโre encouraged to talk to your writer for inspiration, but this is not a commission, so follow your imagination and inspiration.
Do I need to be a professional or experienced artist to join? What if I only like certain Dragon Age games or content?
We accept artists of all skill and experience levels! You do not need to be professional or experienced, and there is no application/jurying period for this type of event. Once you sign up, youโre in!
Our writersโ fics cover all four Dragon Age games, with themes ranging from modern AUs to canon retellings to NSFW & darkfic. Whatever part of Dragon Age is your favorite, we have a fic that will interest you!
About Claims & Matching:
Anonymous pitches will be available from August 3rd - 10th. Artists will submit a sign up form ranking the six (6) fics they most want to work with. Then, the mods will match up writers and artists based on those rankings.
The fics on offer range from Teen to Explicit and have a variety of relationship types, including platonic and crossover ships. Some of our writers are focusing on canon characters, while others are including OCs.
You can find an example of the information provided in the pitches here.
If youโre an artist interested in creating an illustration based on a Dragon Age fanfic, visit our pitch website at the link above, submit your sign up, and follow us here on tumblr to stay in the loop!
You can also (optionally) join our Discord server to get on in the hype and stay on top of announcements.

"But AI can't do your job. It canย helpย you do your job, but that doesn't mean it's going to save anyone money. Take radiology: there's some evidence that AIs can sometimes identify solid-mass tumors that some radiologists miss, and look, I've got cancer. Thankfully, it's very treatable, but I've got an interest in radiology being as reliable and accurate as possible.
If my Kaiser hospital bought some AI radiology tools and told its radiologists: "Hey folks, here's the deal. Today, you're processing about 100 x-rays per day. From now on, we're going to get an instantaneous second opinion from the AI, and if the AI thinks you've missed a tumor, we want you to go back and have another look, even if that means you're only processing 98 x-rays per day. That's fine, we just care about finding all those tumors."
If that's what they said, I'd be delighted. But no one is investing hundreds of billions in AI companies because they think AI will make radiology more expensive, not even if that also makes radiology more accurate. The market's bet on AI is that an AI salesman will visit the CEO of Kaiser and make this pitch: "Look, you fire 9/10s of your radiologists, saving $20m/year, you give us $10m/year, and you net $10m/year, and the remaining radiologists' job will be to oversee the diagnoses the AI makes at superhuman speed, and somehow remain vigilant as they do so, despite the fact that the AI is usually right, except when it's catastrophically wrong.
"And if the AI misses a tumor, this will be the humanย radiologist'sย fault, because they are the 'human in the loop.' It's their signature on the diagnosis."
This is a reverse centaur, and it's a specific kind of reverse-centaur: it's what Dan Davies calls an "accountability sink." The radiologist's job isn't really to oversee the AI's work, it's to take the blame for the AI's mistakes.
This is another key to understanding โ and thus deflating โ the AI bubble. The AI can't do your job, but an AI salesman can convince your boss to fire you and replace you with an AI thatย can'tย do your job. This is key because it helps us build the kinds of coalitions that will be successful in the fight against the AI bubble."
- Cory Doctorow, The Reverse Centaurโs Guide to Criticizing AI
What the fuck? How do you get up there? What's the point of a big ass bridge if you can't even get to it?
It's not even a lack of accessibility, that's negative accessibility atp
There isn't even a road visible and even if there was, the gate is too high up. How did they get all the animals and equipment to Skyhold??? Sorcery, istg
And then they say "ally with the Templars" GIRL you won't even survive Skyhold if you join up with templars, you legit need some proper magic to just access Skyhold ๐
I mean, none of this is wrong, but I do know a cool thing about doors/gates being halfway up a wall which everyone now has to sit through (or scroll past, I guess, but please grab some tea and stay - I think it's cool!)
Anyway, on that note, welcome to Castle Fraser. It's in the North East bit of Scotland. Image from here
I did the below diagram in the mighty graphics program of MS Paint, so you might want to brace yourselves for its awesomeness...
You braced?
So that very precise big blue square? That's the original tower. Loads of Scottish castles start out this way - a big square lump in the landscape with other bits added on over the centuries.
That red square, though? That's the interesting bit.
It's the original doorway. It would have been accessible via a wooden staircase. If the old tower (or 'auld tour', if you're being Scots about it) had come under attack, residents would have just burned the wooden stairs and waited out the siege.*
I'm not saying that's why Skyhold has going on - goodness knows what that's about - but there is precedence IRL for high-up doors in buildings likely to see combat.
Other cool things you might be able to see from this picture: there are no low windows on the auld tour - that's to stop folk from trying to climb in that way. There are some arrow slits (I think - it's been an age since I was in that neck of the woods... a Dragon Age if you will ๐) but the lower floors would have been used for storage. When you get high up enough for accommodation, the windows get bigger to let in light. They're still not big though, for actual windows that might be useful, you have to look at the newer parts of the castle.
Anyways, I just think it's cool to see tower-defense strategies that aren't just moat or motte & bailey related - that tends to be most of what we see in fantasy. And like, the Scottish tower houses are still from the same neck-of-the-woods as these other structures - it'd be nice to see what the rest of the world outside of Europe was doing for defense at this time.
Anyways... yay castles? Maybe knowing this can help suspend disbelief a little at the stupid Skyold gate?
__
*Because archaeology, a lot of people argue over this, stating that residents wouldn't have had any water, given that wells are generally outside of buildings at this point, but I would say that... have you ever been in Scotland? Shove some barrels on the roof and you could drink for months because R A I N. Sooooo much rain omg.
I'm not sure if wooden stairs would make sense at the gate to the bridge (cause carts and stuff) but something like a wooden ramp that they could also burn down in case of siege is an amazing concept!
Thank you for the history lesson! I fucking love Scottish castles and now thanks to you Skyhold is a Scottish castle in my mind fkjgdkkg
(also as a side note: I did rummage through my art book and didn't find a mention of a lift or other mechanism BUT early concepts of Skyhold DID have a road to the gate. IDK what went wrong lmao)
Also, if we consider the elven history of Skyhold, it is very likely that when it was first in use they didn't need roads, because of eluvian transport.
