Screaming, Crying

"The Writer is liable to feel like a little, tiny person all alone in a desert where the sand is words. Giant figures of Best-Sellers and Great Authors loom over her like statues—Look on my works, ye puny, and despair!—This lonely, sitting-there person may find that in a work-centered workshop she can draw on the kind of group support and collaborative rivalry, the pooled energy, that actors, dancers, and musicians, all performing artists, draw on all the time.

And so long as ego-tripping is discouraged, the process of the workshop, depending on mutual aid, stimulation, emulation, honesty, and trust, can produce an unusually pure and clear form of that energy.

The participant may be able to carry some of that energy home, not having learned “how to write,” but having learned what it is to write.

Anyway, the next night we watched a thing about some pig man who is supposed to live in Vermont. People said it had claws and a pig nose but walked upright like a man. Now, I happen to know that sideshows used to shave bears and present them as pig men. So every piece of evidence they gave of this monster sounds to me like a bear with mange.

So now the running joke in our house is that everything is bears. Aliens? Bears. Loch Ness monster? Bear. Every cryptozoological mystery is just a very crafty bear.

VI - The Lovers

There is literally no way to pick a couple for this card without launching a million ship wars, so have Marnie and Marlon. (If you want me to draw you a Lovers card with your ship of choice, I might open commissions when I'm done with this project. Maybe. We'll see.)

Setting that aside, I do actually think Marnie and Marlon are a good take on this card, even if they are just platonic partners in your head cannon. For one thing, they both represent two aspects of living in the valley - the life on the land, and the hard work it takes to keep that land safe; ranching and monster-fighting; peace and battle. Both of them have hard and grueling jobs, and both of them deal with life and death in their many forms. When the two are at balance, there is harmony and alignment.

When the two are at odds, the balance is off, values are misaligned, and things can quickly veer off into the wrong direction. Can you imagine the Valley if everyone only thought of fighting the shadow folk? Or a Pelican Town that completely ignored the dangers of the mines? Yeah, me neither.

Figured I do a quick quilt top, you know, just throw something together.

And then I made two blocks of the forty eight needed for this Harvest quilt and boy howdy.

And the quilt! She be gorgeous!

Love that fuck-off bright yellow I picked for the cornerstones, they’re perfect for this.

I decided that since the quilt top was so colourful, I’d put plain flat black cotton the back and use up some of these bobbins, making the quilting on the back really stand out.

Holy shit did it work or what! I love it, of course LOL

I used a medium purple on the top so it would fade into the patchwork and not show up too much on the background. The quilting pattern is called Pink Lemonade and it is one of my favourite quilting patterns.

I didn’t have any left over border fabric, so I found a nice blue that matched with that print and made it my binding. I debated using purple, but couldn’t convince myself to do it.

The blue looks good though, from the front and the back.
