How utterly dissonant it is from the reality of how Matthias Jesper and Wylan felt while she was away. Inej is so loved and admired by ALL the Crows is borderline insane; Kaz (for the readers) and Nina are obvious cases, but like-

As soon as Inej is kidnapped and Kaz mentions getting back at Van Eck without even saying her name, Wylan Jesper and Matthias immediately make it about her because that's the important thing, and that carries on for the entire following week- literally everyone is pissed Kaz refuses to openly make it about Inej when that's what they're all thinking about first and foremost including Kaz but that's not the point.

She assumes Matthias might come to save her to back up Nina, but he personally holds Inej in such high regard for her bravery and skills, he's among those who felt like she deserves better than Kaz and he was shocked when he found out she was beaten in combat despite days of starving herself and poor rest- and the guy has been a trained soldier for a good chunk of his life.

She doubts Jesper would prioritize her over the money he needs, but the guy sacrificed his guns, his most beloved item and one that brings him comfort other than his weapon of choice, so that he could successfully do his part in Kaz's plan to take Alys and do the trade.

She doesn't even register Wylan as an option, but he felt responsible for her situation simply because Jan is his father, he's the one who tries to respect Inej's moral code when they're holding Alys hostage and he's so confused by Kaz's insanely violent reaction because "Isn't this all about Inej?".

And yeah, of course everything going on with Kaz, and Nina thinking of Inej to push through addiction withdrawal, just...

In the US, there is no meaningful legal definition for educational/academic neglect in any of the 50 states or federally. What this means is that a child can be "homeschooled" and exclusively be taught how to cook and clean, reach the age of 18 being unable to read, write, or count, and this alone is not considered neglect. That 18yo, should they even have the knowledge that suing exists, has no legal grounds to sue their parents for denying them an education.

In over 40 US states, a convicted child abuser can homeschool their children. So someone who has done time for child abuse and somehow regains access to their child(ren) can decide upon returning home that they want to "homeschool" their kids. Those children are now locked in a home with their abuser where nobody can see them.

There are no welfare checks.

There are no routine assessments.

There aren't even databases — state or federal — keeping track of how many homeschooled kids there actually are.

Meaning a child can be locked in their home for their entire life with their convicted abuser, learn absolutely nothing, never go to the doctor, and so long as that child is fed, clothed, and the abuse isn't physical or sexual, that child has almost no chance of rescue and no legal ground to seek restitution if/when they escape.

The only way homeschooled children get rescued is if they're beaten, starved, or physically neglected and they're able to get the right person to see that. Otherwise? They have to wait until someone finds out they were murdered as a result of their parents "homeschooling".

And feral homeschool parents love to jump down my throat about this, and then get even more pissed when I tell them I'm a homeschool alumni.

Because I know it's not all homeschoolers. But even one is too many, and the lack of protections should scare everyone. If you're a good homeschool parent, nothing will change. If not, you deserve whatever comes your way as a result of adequate oversight.

• The audience being included in the film is very important to me. We are also parts of this story. All good tales have a listener. There is a witness for the wedding. The marrying of the tale and the story. It is a performance.

In the brief flashbacks of him and Jordie, there are mentions of them holding hands, laying a head on someone's chest and just being very comfortable with touch.

And then, if you look at the duology, despite Kaz's PTSD, there are actually several instances of him and Inej touching (carrying her to the boat, grabbing her wrist on the Ice Court roof, grabbing her hand on the boat, touching her shoulder, helping her with bandages, offering a hand to get up, holding her bare hand, his arm around her when she falls, etc.) Obviously, he struggles with some of these, but they still happen.

How many times does Kaz verbally acknowledge his feelings for Inej? About twice. And both those times are extreme circumstances where he feels he might lose her.
