i know what this situation needs…explicit fanfiction
it is so dang funny to me that there is this cultural pressure for artists to be modest about their art. 'you cant say your own book is five stars' WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO RATE IT FOUR? buckaroo if you create ANYTHING from your heart it has all the grand cosmic uniqueness you do. CELEBRATE YOURSELF
you guys know about the hobby lobby smuggling scandal right
hobby lobby’s hammurabi robbing hobby
i demonstrated great social competence at the bar recently when the bartended mentioned shopping at hobby lobby and i said i never did this because of the trafficking in looted antiquities.
They are extremely homophobic and transphobic - each year they give millions of dollars to the National Christian Foundation. The NCA then uses that money to fund 23 different non-proffits which have been identified by the Southern Poverty Law Center as hate groups, they also make huge campaign donations to conservative Christian political candidates, and that is just the tip of the iceberg.
They have funded successful campaigns in other countries to make homosexuality illegal and punishable by death. They strongly support conversion therapy.
They went to court and won the right to only offer employee insurance that does not pay for birth control or abortion, and because of this lawsuit any business can also deny women the right to control their own bodies because "religious beliefs".
so I saw someone just today, re: the Joann Fabrics closings, saying "you're not a bad person if you shop at hobby lobby because you don't have anywhere else nearby to buy craft goods in person"
and like. I don't think shopping at shitty stores makes you a bad person. but consider that in order to live according to our principles sometimes it may be necessary to accept inconveniences. whether that means shopping online or driving a further distance than we'd like, or saving up to buy more expensive supplies, or whatever.
I'm the first to say hobbies are important to our well-being but also we will not shrivel up and die if we have to wait an extra couple weeks for more yarn. I'm also the first to say there's no ethical consumption in late capitalism but there is also definitely a difference between standard shitty corporations and these weird imperialist fucks.
Some alternatives:
Shop Michaels arts and crafts store for art supplies, crafts, framing, floral, home décor & seasonal products. Michaels is your go-to for cr

Art supplies:
Blick offers the best selection of art supplies online. Shop paint, drawing supplies, crafts, framing, and more. Find all your art supply ne
Also, you can find supplies on places like Facebook Marketplace & craigslist! Also search Mercari! Plenty of gently used or brand new stuff out there if you know what you're looking for!!
And at I've noticed a few local shops outside main citys. Check your suburbs!
@i-add-sources ? I think these are true but I don't think I've actually seen a source
^"controversies" section has sourced info about the contraceptives and more about the smuggling, and endangerment of employees as well as the "he gets us" superbowl ad campaign.
Hobby lobby 2023 tax returns. The biggest donations ($6+ million , twice) are to Vanguard charitable endownment program, possibly to hide controversial donations. There are also donations to many different universities and fraternities/sororities, and a few churches, as well as a single, comparatively small, donation to a planned parenthood location in Houston, TX.
In 2012, Hobby Lobby donated the Northfield campus to the National Christian foundation. The building was estimated to be worth $20.000.000 at the time.
This is true.
something that I feel like is missing from fandom nowadays is the idea that you dont have to have a unified, chronologically/tonally consistent interpretation of your favorite work. your fics dont have to fit within the same version of canon, even if theyre all canon-compliant on their own. your headcanons can contradict each other. be a multishipper. write metas that take two totally different interpretations of the same plot point. write a character as a villain and then write them as the hero next time. write a character as a lesbian and then write them as straight next time! engage in hypotheticals and drop them when you get bored! make up the rules as you go!! have fun with it!!!

truly from the bottom of my heart i hate the level of enshittification etsy has reached because it's still the best place to buy patterns for my hobby and every time i go scrolling through endless ai-generated bullshit to finally dig up a human-designed pattern i like, i'm hit with a deluge of 'popular!! 563 people are looking at this right now!! it's in 134632 baskets!! you must buy immediately!!!' it's a pdf file. it's a fucking pdf file. do you get off on trying to give people fomo over a fucking pdf file. fuck off. get diarrhea forever.
and that's not even touching the ai-generated patterns with hundreds of 5-star bot reviews that are stupidly easy to spot if you know what to look for. but most beginners don't know what to look for, so they're straight-up scammed into buying based on a nice picture. then their 'hey, i made this and it looks nothing like advertised' comments get buried under hundreds of 5-star bot reviews, and this is how someone who might have otherwise discovered an interesting and fulfilling hobby drops it, thinking the pattern's fine, everyone else likes it, so it's on them for not being good enough. it pisses me off so much, you have no idea.
anyway, here's some shops selling amigurumi (crochet soft toys) patterns fully created by crafters. i've either bought and made patterns from them or saved them for later, meaning i already checked that they aren't ai-generated. i might make a post later on how to spot ai-generated amigurumi patterns, but i wanted to give these a shout-out. go buy from them if you can, it's cool stuff and an interesting skill to learn.
straw animals design (etsy store) plushies and accessories, including some knitted patterns. beginner friendly!
green frog crochet (website store). mostly doll patterns, very pretty and totally worth the time and effort. they also sell full kits for some of the patterns, that include all supplies except for crochet hooks and fiberfill. also, youtube channel with tutorials.
moonlight crochet (etsy store). mostly doll patterns, lots of clothes you can adapt to dolls of similar sizes
yan schenkel (website store for individual patterns) has several books out that i really love. it took a bit of digging to figure out if this online store selling the pdf versions is legit and i found that the publisher sells directly through them. there are three pattern books (1, 2, 3) with animal plushies.
natura crochet (website store) has colorful animal and holiday themed patterns, plus two books of aquatic themed patterns. same publisher/seller as above.
hanichan (website store) has a distinct and minimalist style that i think is very beginner friendly. there are also useful general tutorials for amigurumi.
aquariwool crochet (etsy store). a lot of colorful and fun animal patterns. i haven't bought anything from them yet but i have a few saved and honestly just looking through the patterns makes me happy.
make me roar (website store). one of the more unique styles i've seen out there, especially these.
jo handmade design (etsy store). both plushies and more realistic toys, the patterns are very well written and illustrated.
whenever possible i linked to a store outside etsy, but not all pattern creators have one, so it's 100% worth checking them out and supporting them despite the absolute tar pit they operate in. also whatever creative hobby you're curious about, don't let an ai-generated picture discourage you from trying it. you are a god capable of summoning something out of nothing and generative ai is a pathetic little string of mathematical operations with ideas above its station.
I AM GOING TO SCREAM AND SCREAM AND SCREAM to the heavens until everyone knows about the Etsy competitor goimagine!!!
Shop Handmade | Shop Local | Shop with Purpose
The founder of GoImagine refuses to go public or sell the platform: NO SHARE HOLDERS TO APPEASE!!
They have a STRICT vetting process for sellers: NO BOTS, NO AI, NO DROP SHIPPING, HAND MADE CRAFTS ONLY!!
You can narrow down stores you're shopping from by STATE! EASILY SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL BUSINESSES!!
2% of every sale transaction is donated to charity!!!
This is baked into the platform. Right now they're partnered with four different charities to fight childhood hunger, provide relief childcare for families dealing with domestic violence, end childhood homelessness, and fund art accessablity. HELPING KIDS!!!!
I have a shop there that I will be stocking soon! If you're a creator, their basic ship front is FREE and you get 12 listing slots! The next size up is only $5 a month and you get 200 listings, and the topn you're at $15 gives you 1,000 product listings and a whole ass customizable store front website. That's cheaper than anything else on the market rn.
Current downsides that will not remain downsides: they're only available in the USA but they're planning on expanding into Canada soon. And they've been mostly focused on growing their seller side, so not a lot of buyers know about them yet. But!!! That why I tell everyone I can! Shop with them! List your products with them! Use a platform that has a dedicated mission for community good and is there to support sustainable creator markets, not create endless bloated corporate growth!!!!
And dump Etsy yesterday.
Since I was talking about this post earlier this week, here it is again!
Some Ways to Keep a Short Story Short: a very long blog post
Thirty-five approaches to keeping a story a short story
i'm sorry but a lot of you guys need to be writing short stories.
"[x story type] but what if-" short story. come on man you should know that if your story is easily blurbed down to "interesting thing happens" that is not going to sustain a reader for 400-600 pages. a book is where you write an actual narrative, not a cool idea that came to you in the shower last night.
there's nothing wrong with writing a short story! there are lots of good short stories that revolve around Interesting Ideas. What if I was my own mother. What if fish people were real and also (evil) living in massachusetts. What if you were your own worst enemy, literally. lots of good short stories there, all at just the right length for a cool idea. no one is going to go see the feature-length adaptation of William Wilson though, because that's it. unless you add in a tragic backstory and a love interest and so on and unfortunately there are a lot of novels and movies running around out there that clearly were meant to be a short story before someone took them and stretched them to a silly length.
your short story doesn't even have to be short! herman melville wrote over 100 pages of a guy who hated his job so much he died of being a hater the end. good show, herman. thank you
novellas exist. you can write one. please. it's necessary for the land to survive
@justaflyintooka "The Shadow Over Innsmouth", by H.P. Lovecraft
You guys should also be reading short stories, they're like a lovely cool bottle of mineral water if mineral water was concentrated fucked-uppedness.

SO weird to me that the default assumption in modern fandom is that you must be attracted to your favorite characters. nah man those are just my funky little guys and gals i want to study them under a microscope. i want to put them in a mason jar and shake it and see what happens

This is a reminder for those who handmake Christmas presents that now is not too early to start. It may in fact be a good time to start if you have a lot to make/your craft takes a long time. You should maybe start it now, whether that's brainstorming or actually doing the crafts!
Translating this into tumblr's preferred public service announcement format for this kind of alert:

do i have to read everything on ao1 and ao2 in order to understand ao3
Shop is back open! Here are two tapestry designs I’ll have available for my drop come Friday
PDF:
Back from my birthday hiatus, and um, wow... was not expecting this kind of overwhelmingly positive reaction to a simple QRT about how we used Dissolve Mode in our BG paintings on Carol and the End of the World (see last image) - since people seemed to have enjoyed that so much, I thought I'd put all the pages of the Carol and the End of the World BG Paint style guide I drafted in one post! TBH I'd been meaning to do this for awhile but kept forgetting since I have it in a different folder than the BG paintings themselves... I believe all the paintings are mine and all the designs are by Alex Myung unless otherwise noted. I wrote this pretty early on pre-vis, so some of these guidelines got a little massaged during production, but the broad strokes are definitely still there! This wasn't the only style guide on the show BTW! A couple of our other leads Alex Myung and Kal Athannassov also put together a BG and Character Design style guide that are super cool - unfortunately I don't have the files myself (nor would I feel comfortable posting work that's not mine) nor do I think they've posted them yet, so if you two were looking for a sign to do so, this is it!! Now you have everything you need to paint like a Caroler - thanks for looking!! Showrunner: @dan-guterman Art direction: @ellemichalka

making a fanfic book like I Must Preserve This Smut For Future Generations
i say this jokingly of course, but the sentiment IS genuine, nothing but love and respect for our smut writers
and also, the way fanfic does smut is so interesting to me
it's pretty much the only medium where you will get deep, nuanced examinations of themes like life and death, religion and societal structures, where people drawn complex psychological profiles, lay bare all of their characters' neuroses, insecurities, and unspoken needs through the medium of pornography
and there's something so serious about it. I think humans have always loved smut and sex, and there's something unique about fanfiction's unashamed approach to it, about fanfic authors taking smut completely seriously as a tool in the storytelling toolbox just like anything else, sex as not something that is superfluous or forbidden or shameful, but something that is part of the vast array of human experience and deserves to be treated with the same seriousness and care as any other aspect of it
& idk how this will develop in the future with the rise of puritan sentiments in the wider culture, as more and more places on the internet ban or restrict explicit materials, if we stand at the precipice of a massive backslide
but I think that in 200 years, some literary scholar would be delighted to read today's smutty fanfic precisely because it is amateur and unpolished, a pure, raw expression of the writer's humanity unconcerned with marketability or mass appeal
so yeah. I'll print this smut on acid-free paper and build the book as solidly as I know how because I think there is inherent value to horny art, and it is worthy of archiving & I Must Preserve This Smut For Future Generations
More than "here in the Southern Hemisphere we have inverted seasons :)" thing, which is TECHNICALLY true, I would go a step further and encourage to think about that "much of the world does not exactly has a spring-summer-fall-winter season sequence as they show in cartoons"
so i live in boorloo (perth) which is on noongar country and 1. i fucking love the noongar seasons it’s so much more accurate to here 2. should be noted that other season stereotypes are completely different! there’s ONE native deciduous tree here (common coral tree) and it blooms in the middle of july, which to a greater point! different native plants are always blooming all year round! the traditional “spring” period doesn’t really that many more (native) flowers than any other time of the year!
anyways i fucking hate how northern hemisphere coded the western holidays are girl why are you putting up snowflakes and reindeer it’s 40°c outside i am going to melt into a puddle
While colonial genocide means that the weather calendar for my region is no longer known for south-east Queensland (if I am wrong and there's one out there please tell me!), I have found the Banbai calendar pretty accurate for Brisbane (less the snow. We don't snow).
It has 6 "seasons", mostly determined by wildfire risk. One of those seasons: Wildfire Time is 5 months, from November to March.
The 4 seasons model really really doesn't work here.
