Hello! Iβd like 9, 17, 25 for the choose violence ask game if youβd like to answer one or all of them!
Thank you so much for sending the ask! Oh I love ask games, I will answer any and all of them that are sent anytime. So I will absolutely be answering all of them, thank you!
This one gives an interesting excuse to talk about things.
Since I know you through Oz / Wicked I am making the Oz books and Wicked the theme for these answers.
Well the true answer is Baum putting in his racism, colonizer mentality, sexism among other very problematic things in his books. But I believe this ask is supposed to be geared more towards personal distaste so I'll answer it from there.
For Wicked ~ The love triangle and emotional cheating between Elphaba, Fiyero, and Glinda. I don't care about the ships in this or what their sexualities actually are I hate the plot. I get love triangles were popular at the time but I hate it. It wasn't in the Wicked book this was just added in this for drama.
I feel like it hurts a lot of Elphaba and Glinda's friendship which this is supposed to be about. We show them getting so close aside from everything and how strong their bond is then, oop, there's this guy Elphaba wants that Glinda has.
And honestly I don't like it for Elphaba and Fiyero. While yes they technically weren't cheating there was emotional cheating involved and they got right to it after. They're supposed to be this strong relationship of the movies/musical and that's how it starts?
And I don't care if he was trying to keep Glinda happy or whatever he was going through in his head, that ain't an excuse, he should have been an adult and broken up with her.
For the Oz books, I thought of it for a bit because there's a lot of stuff I can nitpick, but what I decided to go with is a mix of the canon and how the fandom treats it.
And that is how, Nimmie Amee is handled both in the books and fandom wise. (You may want to skip this for book spoilers but I tried to be vague).
I genuinely feel like Baum must have forgotten her. Because after the first book he doesn't mention her until much later Nick is reminded of her and the book's plot is about finding her.
It's not that, I do find the storyline interesting because Nick, and Nimmie are flawed and as is the story, and I do love he got back to her but it is so clear he forgot her and this book is partly just to tie it up. I just wish, even if it was the same story and dealing with the same character flaws, it was handled better.
And maybe I'd feel different about this if the fandom wasn't so often like "Hehe look he screwed her over but he did this whole trip with Scarecrow."
...............Well, the one thing he did for certain was screw over the women he promised to marry, left her to as far as he knew to slavery when he got to become king. That's what we know for certain, maybe let's focuse on that and the woman involved rather then your ship. Also, Scarecrow was judging him btw for abandoning Nimmie, he says he'd often wondered why Nick never went back for her. Just a reminder.
(Nothing wrong if you ship it but with Nimmie and Scraps by God I am so fucking sick of this fandom enjoying women being screwed over or presented as evil or acting like the men gave no interest just for their ship. Just because you have a gay ship ain't your excuse to be horrible to women. ~ A lesbian).
Addition for famous 40: All of Ruth.
17. there should be more of this type of fic/art
I live in a constant state of "If you want it, you should make it." So, I've written and made stories about a lot of what I'm going to say. I am also putting this for generalized Oz media, as really, that's just published fan fiction.
I mean, I'd love to see more of Scraps in general. Of her actual character getting some love. She is an amazing character, she is complicated and smart and confident and has a story and so much to her that I'd love to see more of.
Also, can we please have some media actually depict her as the plumb and round confident athletic women she is within canon described to be? Thank you.
I, of course would love to see more of Scraps x Scarecrow, I feel it is a very cute and very underrated ship and I love how they are starting out as good friends who adore each other so much. I would like more of, just them and their stories and exploration of just their friendship turned romantic relationship, together.
Which, you know, you see me determined to make this often on my Oz account @Autisticbeanofoz.
I am genuinely surprised there isn't more stuff exploring the fact Jack is technically the prince of Oz. Considering how much Oz media wants to make a dark royal politics drama it's surprising that is rarely acknowledged.
We need more Dorzma. That's it that's the statement.
I also am forever in waiting for Oz media to let Ozma be am actual trans woman.
I could go on for awhile on this, but going to leave it here for now.
25. common fandom complaint that you're sick of hearing
I am actually going to do a rare thing and start with MGM. Because there is one complaint about that movie I am so fucking sick of hearing.
(And I am going to word what the complaint is nicely)
"She said she missed Scarecrow the most, how horrible of her!"
1. He was her first friend. Of course she's closest to him. He also has the most genuine relationship with her outside of what he had a goal for. They spend the most time together one on one. It absolutely makes sense she is closest to him.
2. And I can not say this enough. SHE WHISPERED IT TO HIM. Y'ALL ACTING LIKE SHE JUST SAID IT IN FRONT OF THE GROUP REWATCH THE MOVIE SHE WHISPERS IT TO HIM PRIVATELY.
3. And if you (not you generalized statement) mention that damn cringy stupid family guy parody one more time, I want you to look me straight in the damn eyeball and explain to me why, you think, this lost teenage girl, owes these grown ass men tagging along with her who are also getting things from this trip absolutely anything. She was polite about it, she whispered it to him as a secret, but hell even if she didn't I do not give a fuck she does not owe them shit.
I am very sick of that complaint.
There is a lot of things fandom wise I can go on. I don't agree with a lot of fandom. I feel like there is a lot of misogyny around Scraps in particular in this fandom that goes widely unacknowledged, a lot more, but, what I landed on.
"You can't make the Oz books dark that ruins the fun magical land of the books!"
The fun magical land of the books. Let's do a rundown of what those books, within canon include, shall we?
Cutting people up rather brutally
To name a few. There is much more. Go ahead, try me, ask about any of them and I will tell you the boon and chapter.
Oz is pretty dark on it's own.
I also feel, as someone who loves Oz, why do we care so much about preserving the world of this sexist, racist colonizer again?
To put on a disclaimer, I am not talking about just not liking dark Oz. That's fine, absolutely, talking about it is perfectly fine too. I am referring to the people who whine so much about every dark Oz thing they see, that no one told them to read, that whine just because the dark Oz media that presents itself as Dark Oz...is indeed, dark Oz media. Or even those who get aggressive or all high and mighty because they don't read it.
I like exploring Dark Oz media quite a bit. I do think it is a fun way to explore Oz as well, the books certainly give plenty of potential for it.
Also, I'll add on to this: "You can't age the kids up!!"
Funny, Baum had that done in his own movies. Dorothy literally has a canon love interest in one, Ozma sings a song about a love interest as well. Again, not that I feel we should care about his opinion but pretty sure he doesn't mind them being explored older.
Even if he would, I don't care. But it's happened in a form of canon so maybe find something else to whine about.
I am just finishing this. I know I am incredibly late I've had this in my notes to be working on for awhile, and I did love answering these. Thank you so much for sending them!
