Screw it, more heraldry - this time for Orpheus' family: the Devereuxs
Emblem: A dragon passant sinister surrounded by a laurel (or/gold) on a deep red field
Head: Lord Gedeon Devereux
From the writings of the Port Maddox chronicler, Gormen Glayne:
"The Devereux family are relatively new to Port Maddox, with records of their settlement starting with the current head of the household, Lord Gedeon Devereux some 50 years ago.
Be that as it may, the young lord settled in quickly, earning a marriage from the former richest lordship, the Corriedale family - wedding Lord Corriedale's only child, his daughter Celine.
From then, the legacy of Corriedale faded and was subsumed by Gedeon's own name. Even their ancestral home, Dolorous Manse, eventually became synonymous with Gedeon Devereux.
Upon his ascension, Lord Devereux's grip on the port city became tighter with all trade monitored through his channels and even began absorbing other business within the city under his control, much to the chagrin of other rich families within the city and beyond - who regarded Lord Devereux as an upstart mogul.
This came to a head upon the untimely death of his beloved, Celine, where Lord Gedeon became far more outwardly antagonistic to his business rivals, culminating in the Midsummer Massacre; where an all out riot on the streets claimed several lives and near brought royal sanctions upon the town but were smoothed over by Lord Gedeon's machinations.
As such, Port Maddox has become the de facto fiefdom of the Devereux family with many under their employ.
Currently, the late Lady Celine is survived by her two children; Erasmus and Eudora. Erasmus then continues the family line with his wife Lady Anya (of the Kettlespoon family) with three children:
Their eldest is their son, Actaeon. A gallant knight of the royal guard - who while popular with the local girls appears to spend a noticeable amount of time with his squires...
Then there is Orpheus, the thorn in Lord Gedeon's side. The boy was born a tiefling of red skin and glowing yellow eyes. The Lord Devereux has never made it a secret his disdain for his grandson, who in turn appears to revel in this disapproval as a philandering acolyte of the pleasure god, Seldrina.
And then there is their only daughter, Cassandra, whom appears to be a rather sharp young lady with rumours of a secret tryst with a known dragonborn ne'er-do-well that Lord Gedeon is quick to have silenced.
Try as the grim lord likes to remedy, speculation and potential scandal has hovered over his family since his very arrival. With some very dark rumours surrounding the mysterious patriarch as well.
Some claim him to be some kind of sorcerer, or even a fiend in disguise. Utter nonsense of course. Mostly brought on by a mixture of the lord's austere manner and the rather surprising circumstance with his grandson but tiefling births while uncommon can occur for a myriad of reasons.
No, the Devereuxs are merely a long line of rich eccentrics, trying so desperately to hide their all too human vices from an already knowing public.
