If the Gormenghast books had come out ten years ago Steerpike would be an instant tumblr sexyman with 100 gallons of discourse to pour into our feeds. There'd also be a sub fandom for the chorus of professors in the second book. Fuchsia would be villainized for no reason whatsoever. The point of the books would fly so far over the American reader's heads that there'd be an outright public ourcry demanding the return of feudalism.
