my dad's been saying stuff like "bet" and "no cap" recently and honestly I thought he was doing a bit, but it turns out a few months ago his job moved him next to some of the young people in the office, so now my almost-retirement-age father just actually talks like this I guess
he was telling me today about how one of these Young People™ used to be a hockey player, and coincidentally one of the 30-somethings in the office used to be a referee. and the ex-ref likes to tell stories about how many times he had to break up fights the younger guy started, and they hang out all the time, and haha it's so funny they ended up at the same boring office job, and man...some romance writer or AU fic author out there must be feeling their eye twitching from the sheer BL plot nonsense vibes emanating from this building
THANK YOU DON’T MIND IF I DO
Dragons are fireless until they undergo the Hroom, the traditional draconic ceremony where a fledgling dragon will go out into the world and make a bargain with a spirit of elemental fire to live in their soul in a state of mutual symbiosis. The spirit receives shelter and nourishment, while the dragon receives a source of elemental fire, which it can only now use to defend itself.
In many draconic cultures, the Hroom marks a dragon’s coming of age, a time to recognize that a dragon is now of a proper age to hold a weapon and defend itself. Some dragons believe that it is only by bonding with an elemental spirit that a dragon has a soul, and that a dragon is only a whole dragon when it has both the mortal shell and the inner spark.
There has been a backlash to this in recent centuries, of course. Fledglings these days are going out and making bargains with all kinds of things. This is usually spirits of elemental lightning and ice, but more than one dragon has come back to their clutch with a fairly bewildered witch.
#Does the witch live inside the dragon's soul after...?
Metaphorically, yes. One dragon had married the witch she brought back to her clutch, and she said that meant their two souls had become one, which was basically the same thing.
The other dragons in her brood said it didn’t work that way, but she was able to breathe pure magic afterwards, so it at least worked that way for her.

one thing I really love about Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die is that it understands that AI is fucking stupid. I've seen some criticism that the film is trivializing the issue, and I'm like no, that's the point. its being treated with exactly the amount of respect it deserves. The horse cock cumming glitter is good, actually.
this heatwave fucking sucks how am I going to serve my liege like this

A cautionary tale about the growing literacy crisis
I feel like Apothecary Diaries is exemplary proof that writing quality depends not on which tropes are used, but on how they're used. The yeast of that story ferments on one of the most maligned and frustrating tropes in existence, and yet it's executed so well that the bread is delicious with a nice firm crust.
MaoMao and Jinshi are both intelligent in a lot of ways, including deductive reasoning. So one might expect their repeated misunderstandings or continued blindness toward certain revelations to feel contrived. But they never do, in part because of how brilliantly their characterization was established.
From the first installment, Maomao ponders how "knowing too much" could get her into trouble.
At first her main concern is her own literacy. The ability to read is not a skill most young women of her station possess, and would doubtlessly draw attention. Attention threatens her ability to lay low and wait out her service contract. So she keeps this skill hidden.
And indeed, her concerns are validated by the narrative, because she catches the attention of Jinshi and Gyokuyou—two of the highest authority figures of the rear palace—immediately upon employing her literacy in her effort to warn the concubines of the poisonous effects of the makeup.
This instantly alters the course of her life, a consequence that at first seems positive; after all, personal attendant to a concubine is certainly several steps above the average palace launderess. But these elevated steps bring more attention onto her, and it isn't long at all before the emperor himself is ordering her to perform medical miracles.
Knowledge is power. And as Maomao explains to Jinshi: it's not always about what someone will do with power; it's about what they can do.
So Maomao uses the powerlessness of her station as a shield, and hides behind it by pretending not to know things.
And the way she does this is interesting, in part because she is so good at deduction. Often it comes down to her simply choosing not to pursue a line of thinking, forcefully redirecting her attention elsewhere the moment she realizes that certain lines may connect to form a bigger picture than someone of her station should see.
Maomao is an apothecary. Effectively, throughout the story, she's an herbalist, pharmacist, chemist, physician, dietician, and forensic detective.
At the same time, her primary survival mechanism is avoidance. And this is established very early in her characterization, even before her actual titular passion.
When Maomao, solver of mysterious deaths, worker of medical miracles, foiler of assassination plots, repeatedly fails to connect the increasingly-obvious dots pointing to Jinshi's true identity, it doesn't feel contrived at all; because by the time those dots begin to come to light, the story has already established that it's firmly in-character for Maomao to simply refuse to pick up the pencil if she already knows what picture those dots will form. As long as she doesn't draw those connections herself, she can remain safe in denial.
And that's how Apothecary Diaries turned one of my least-favorite tropes into one of the most compelling parts of its story.
I think a huge part of this is that her biological father Lakan goes completely off vibes alone, but her adopted father Loumen drilled into her that she shouldn't go off of vibes. Don't voice conjecture.
I think for what her role was, an apothecary connected to Verigris where a bunch of very powerful people frequent, it would be so important to avoid stepping on the wrong toes. You're there to heal the sick, not cast blame or judgement that will ruin people. Leave it to someone else to connect dots.
So, when she sees someone being treated higher than they technically should be, she just kind of shuffles it off to the side. I'm here for one thing, and one thing only. Doesn't matter that Jinshi is young for being in such a powerful position which is very unfavorable for most nepotism hires. Doesn't matter that he's doing ceremonies of great importance. Doesn't matter to me! He's asked me to look into this one task and this is the only thing I'll speak on.
I think the part that I love is how she might be assuming his practiced smiles are as much a weapon as any of the courtesans utilize. Touching is not a sign of affection, but a means to an end. At the end of the day, her hope is that if she's a good little detective she gets what she wants and he gets what he wants. And if she starts considering that he wants anything beyond a good detective, well that would leave her scheming in a way that left her mother in a sick room, cutting infant fingers off.
I've been watching Apothecary Diaries lately.... I think Jinshi should be more pathetic!!
