I’ll never understand why anthropomorphic animal cartoons like Robin Hood and Zootopia will go to the trouble of creating character designs that are meant to be understood as “attractive” or even “sexy” to the human audience but explicitly avoid showing interspecies romances between anthropomorphic animals. Why is THAT weird but, like, trying to make rabbits recognizably sexy-coded to humans isn’t?

Sometimes, sure, but why was Maid Marian a fox in Robin Hood? There wasn’t anything particularly “foxlike” about her personality, and it would make more sense for her to be a lion. They made her a fox only because Robin was a fox and making her something else would be “weird”, but I don’t think the wolf cop or the chicken maid or the lion prince were actually meant to represent race.

My favorite conversation to have with people is when they ask me what Mega Man game to pick up first if they’re just starting out because they always get so shocked when I tell them DO NOT start with Mega Man 1.

“…But isn’t that the first game?”

Buddy I don’t dislike MM1 but it will leave you decimated unless you are the bravest solidier and can fight through the storm.

Pick up 2 or 11 and go from there, please.

Wanna elaborate on my stance on this and why the game is like that™ because the entire thing fascinates me.

To put it simply, the game’s mechanics suffers from first game syndrome, where it’s trying to find its place, but it’s not there yet until people came back with their opinions, making MM2 more refined.

To put it in more detail, due to the fact this was the first game of its time, MM1 borrowed some of its functions from other platformers at the time, mainly Mario.

The problem? Mario does not make a full stop when you cease his movement.

Now, this isn’t an issue for Mario games because the platforming allows some room for movement and encourages running starts, but for Mega Man, a meticulous platformer, where you need to time everything perfectly, it is in fact, not fun, when you mean to stop at the edge of a platform just to fall off the cliff.

Add that to other unnecessary mechanics like a timer and score system and it just had a lot of mechanics that clashed with some of the more appealing, unique elements of the game.

And look, as overblown as MM2 is now, it took a lot of those issues and gave the series much needed tweaking to make Mega Man it’s own platformer rather than just ripping off of Mario.

it's very frustrating seeing otherwise well-structured posts about media literacy and critical thinking bookended with statements about "nowadays", "nobody has literacy anymore", "this generation is so anti-intellectual", and the like, unquestioningly falling into better past fallacies.

Do we really think the 80s and its Satanic Panic were better at critical thinking? what about the 40s? the Victorian era? societies have always had problems with critical thinking and literacy, because most societies have dealt with propaganda, corrupt leadership, difficulty providing education (due to poverty or discrimination or other issues), and/or people who resist critical thinking (due to privilege or circumstance or what have you). we can criticize media trends without pulling a "well back in the GOOD OLD DAYS" about it.

But also because when I was 11 i read a short story about a girl who went to a museum and stole a bandage flake off a mummy on display with the mentality of "im just one person one piece won't be missed" then at night she was visited by the mummy and it plucked a single hair from her head and then the next night a different mummy took another hair and she realized that there were only so many pieces to her before there would be nothing left and that story was forever wedged in my brain. This is leaving out the most crucial piece of why that was a normal reality: UNIONS. Union participation percentage is a measly 10% across all industries for the latest statistics in 2025. Unions are the ones who could fight against the requirement for everyone and their mother to need a minimum of a bachelor's degree. they could fight for working hours to be properly compensated so that the work week was actually 40 hours or less and everything over was actually paid for. The reality of the work place and why we work so much more for so much less is because we are not unionized. the reason europeans seem to have it so much better is because of their strong union culture. there are solutions to these problems and we need to stop obscuring the why.
