Hi, I'm writing an AU of Deltarune; Inspired by both Princess Tutu and Revolutionary Girl Utena, I then remembered your drawings of the group in the roles you thought would best suit them. For example; Kris is a Utena flavored Anthy with Noelle being a Anthy flavored Utena. With Susie and Rasiel being Pure Utena and Pure Anthy respectively.
Could you elaborate what it means when they are a character flavored character? I find that intriguing does that mean it's like Anthy doing actions to Utena but in a way she does it?
Also are you a fan of RGU if so its nice to meet a fan
hi!! im glad to have an excuse to explain this, actually, because i like explaining things. for the reference of everyone else, the mentioned drawing is this
when i used the word "flavored" here what i more specifically meant was "they're similar to one character on an aesthetic and surface level, but if you look at their overall arc and role in the story they're more similar to this other character".
kris, on a surface level, seems like they have more in common with utena. they're both androgynous sword-wielding heroes clad in blue who take (one of) the most active role(s) in the story. as we've learned, however, kris is WAY more involved with the factors of the plot we cant see, is actually doing some shady shit behind the scenes, and might even be complicit in all the terrible things that have happened/are happening and feels trapped by guilt from all sides (but they are still just a child being manipulated+abused by adults who have convinced them it's all their fault and they deserve this), and the only way theyre able to find any sense of agency is through fucking with people. just like anthy.
on the other side, noelle appears to be a classic damsel in possession of an innate power that's being exploited, and the most obvious and undeniable victim in the cast. not only that, but a victim of misogynistic violence perpetuated by The System. and she gets drawn in anthy's red rose bride dress all the dang time, even i've done it. but noelle is flailing in the dark, she's being pulled into a trap that she can't see the full scope of, and even when given clear signals that she's in danger she keeps going deeper anyway out of a desperate desire to finally understand the world. she's the dreamer who finds comfort in familiar stories and fairy tales, and that's used against her so she can be a cog in the machine of the narrative (a very important cog, but still a cog). she looks like anthy, but she shares her deeper character elements with utena.
aaaaand then susie is more like utena than anthy, and ralsei more like anthy than utena, on both a surface and character/narrative level for reasons that i hope are obvious.
this is of course only applicable when comparing deltarune to rgu, but that happens a lot, especially wrt the weird route. the iconic "sword pull" pose has been drawn with kris and noelle countless times, in a way that fits them superficially (the active vs the passive, the hero vs the princess, and, if you want to go there, the "masculine" vs the feminine) and im not saying thats bad. the pose is instantly recognizable even to a lot of people who haven't watched rgu and on an aesthetic level it seems obvious who should be who. but if you want to look further in, maybe not!
tldr the flavor thing is my extremely simplified way of alluding to All That. (and omg of course im an rgu fan, otherwise i wouldnt have lovingly studied and redrawn all those screenshots or typed any of this)
