reminder to worldbuilders: don't get caught up in things that aren't important to the story you're writing, like plot and characters! instead, try to focus on what readers actually care about: detailed plate tectonics
@dragonpyre any chance you could elaborate on this
I grew up learning about land formations. Seeing fictional maps that donât follow the logic and science of them makes me upset
What are the most common sins youâve seen relating to this? I wanna know
Mordor.
Why is the mountain range square. How did the mountain range form. Why is there one singular volcano in the center. Why does it act like a composite volcano but have magma that acts like itâs from a shield. If itâs hotspot based volcanic activity why is there only one volcano.
And then the misty mountains!!!! Why isnât there a rain shadow!! And why is there a FOREST where the rain shadow should be!!!!!!!!
So what is a rain shadow?
Wind blows clouds in from the sea, but mountains are so tall the clouds can't get past 'em, so you get deserts on the windward side of mountain ranges because clouds can't get there to water the land, or do so only very rarely.
Oh yeah nothing is more annoying than fantasy maps that can't get mountains, rivers and rain shadows right.
May I recommend my new favorite tool: Mapgen4. You start with a random seed and then add mountains, valleys, shallow water, or oceans as you like. You can adjust the wind direction to make wind shadows off the mountains fall where you want. You can adjust overall raininess to make the rivers larger or smaller, or have more or fewer tributaries. It works best for small, isolated landmasses (think islands more than continents) but as thereâs no scale bar and itâs all slightly abstracted anyway you can do whatever you want with it. Iâve only just started playing with it but itâs SO FUN.
One day I'll have my own library. Until then, I'll just have to draw it into reality.
A hero in more ways than one
I NEVER KNEW THAT

Some of you are severely missing the point of Stray.
Stray is a game about the human condition and what it means to be alive, and more specifically to be human. Especially in a world where there are no humans left.
Sure, the game could be about a robot becoming more and more sentient as time goes on, but that's exactly what all of the robots have been doing for thousands of years. Why would 5 hours make any difference?
No. This game was a commentary on humans as a species. All of us. And it had to be done with no humans around else they have Opinions.
Stray is about the hubris of man. Humanity was killed by disease that the rich did nothing about. Then, a select few rose into power and controlled everyone else. It's about what it means to be alive, as we watch these very non-human robots gain sentience and learn to be their own people.
Yes, they are very simplistic, but that's because they're in the very early states of becoming human themselves.
They don't have high intelligence yet since they're just living off of what humans left behind.
They are starting to develop their own culture based heavily on human's.
They made their own language composed of the broken fragments of human's languages!
They're "simplistic" because they're still learning. And you know what? That's what humans do. We learn, grow, and develop. And now without humans around, these robots can do that themselves.
And that's why you play as a cat.
Cats are very intelligent. Clearly, they managed to live FAR longer than humans did (which yeah, I fully believe that), and have learned to live just fine lives on their own. But, they're also alive. They've been alive and evolving far longer than any of the robots have been.
Our cat (Stray or Ginger, whichever) is the only one able to save them because they understand what it means to be alive and to be "human." Cats are social creatures. This cat made it by helping others and being friendly. That's a human trait.
It had to be a cat for how small and nimble they are, but also how smart they are. It couldn't be a dog since they're heavier and rely too much on people (at least now). Couldn't be a mouse because that's too small and underdeveloped of a mind. Can't be a bird since it would just fly out.
Stray/Ginger is uniquely fit to do this because they're a cat.
The robots are copying human behavior. They said that themselves. So, that means learning and evolving over time. They will rise from our ashes, in due time.
But our little furry companion has had millions of years on them. And so they are able to spread that message about love and freedom to them from experience.
When B-12 passed away, and Stray/Ginger curled up next to them? That's a sign of love. That's a sign of compassion and companionship. It's a sign of love.
It's a sign of this cat's humanity.
THAT is what Stray is about.
Stray is giving me a better understanding of cat behavior for sure.
I already found the clue I needed but Iâm going to proceed to knock the rest of the pictures off this wall anyway, you understand.Â
Knocking bottles off shelves is very satisfying but also? on general principle? they were in my way, and now theyâre not.
I will use the scratch option anywhere i can just to see what happens. Â
Is tripping people walking by an achievement? Iâm gonna do it anyway.
Sorry Momo Iâll be there in just a sec but I found a jingle ball and I have to play with it right now immediately. Itâs very important.Â
WHY will nobody PET me???? :(
Iâm a hyper-intelligent evolved cat who can understand speech and make complex plans, but Iâm going to fail to evolve any new behaviors and continue to meow and act exactly like a housecat anyway. Why improve on perfection!
My collection of clothing references for writing.Â
Ya know what , Iâm adding. Here are more useful references that I use;
character in a fight scene: *restrains their opponent by pinning them against the wall by their wrists*
me:
character in a fight scene: *pins their opponent down by straddling their waist and holding their wrists to the floor*

Every time this crosses my dash it gets better.
all of these, but in an unmistakably gay way, ya know?
Was there ever a way to mistake these as heterosexual
And it keeps going XDÂ
I never fucking get tired of this post.
Merry Christmas.

The Australian Ballet is doing Alice in Wonderland again and on one hand Iâve seen it before, and on the other, their Queen of Hearts has my favourite costume in anything every
Itâs just this and her court pushes her around the stage on wheels and every act it gets taller until she towers over everyone
Also in act 3 (I think) it swings open at the front and her husband is sitting inside reading a newspaper
I saw this again on Tuesday so here are some things Iâd forgotten about:
This is the only Alice adaptation Iâve ever seen that doesnât cut the caucus race
The mad hatter wears taps throughout and itâs so jarring and surprising itâs perfect
The executioner shadows almost everyone who dances with the Queen
Lewis Carroll is a character in the ballet and becomes the white rabbit who leads Alice into wonderland which is bad and wrong because Carroll is the dodo but does work very well
They started dropping rose petals from the ceiling onto the audience when Alice looked through the door to the garden and it was utterly magic
The Cheshire Cat is made of about 10 different puppets that dance around the stage
Which reminds me Alice is styled after Alice Liddell rather than the John Tenniel illustrations
I donât think the king of hearts actually dances he just wanders around looking confused
hereâs a video
more. (btw this is a parody/reference to the very famous ârose adagioâ from sleeping beauty)
the Caterpillar is pretty neat too
(all of these videos are from the Royal Balletâs productions in 2014 and 2017)
Yo I am HERE for this!Â

Poor Aizawa just wanted a nap and now he has to deal with his kittens⌠Many kittens.
Itâs based on that photoset of a dad-cat hiding from his babies and as they find him they all pile on top of him.Â
Idk it was supposed to be a quick sketch lol idk what happened.
So cute!

For future reference.
Thank you.

reblogging here because i can see this being relevant to anyone whoâs ever tried to get out of an abusive relationship
Reblogging because that last comment made me reread the whole thing in a new light and realize this could be vital information. So, putting it out there for everyone, and hoping no one ever really needs it.
Mulan: A City Girl
(this was done as a commission for @significantfoliage :D)
Her mother complains that theyâre country folk, that their families were born and died in farmland, and that they should do the same. She says this so often that her husband has stopped responding to her entirely.
Mulan doesnât know what growing up in the country would have been like. She remembers it vaguely, like a dream. When she was a little girl, her father was summoned to the capital to serve the emperor as his one of his advisers.
Her father couldnât have denied the emperor, so Mulan doesnât understand her motherâs anger.
But it doesnât matter, for she grows up in the city, grows up running through the palace, constantly trailing after her father and getting underfoot.
Sheâs a beautiful child, with large expressive eyes and a waterfall of shiny black hair. Her face is as pale as the moon, and her lips a ruddy red. Many people comment on it, saying that sheâll surely make a beautiful bride one day. Her father says nothing, reacting with stony silence until they change the subject.
Little girls grow up to be brides. She knows that.
But in the capital, she thinks there are so many things more interesting to do than becoming a bride. Like riding horses, and playing board games, and pestering her father into teaching her how to properly hold a sword.
Like archery.
She watches the men practice in the courtyard for hours, arrow after arrow hitting their targets. She wants to be able to do that, but her father says sheâs not strong enough yet, that she has to wait to learn.
Sheâs ten years old, and she feels plenty strong. If her father expects time to dissuade her, then heâs sorely mistaken. But she can wait. The other advisors wonât help her learn how to hold a sword, but they do play Go with her, and thatâs almost as good.
Mulan is awake even earlier than usual one morning, and she sees a boy a few years older than her on the practice field.
Heâs very bad.
Itâs no wonder heâs practicing when no one else can see him.
She walks up behind him, and heâs not very observant either, because sheâs nearly on top of him when she says, âYouâre holding it all wrong.â
He jumps nearly a foot in the air, and she covers her mouth with her sleeve to hide her giggles. His eyes narrow and he holds out an arrow threateningly, like heâs ready to stab her in the neck with it. âWho are you? What are you doing here?â
âI am Hua Mulan,â she says. âI was walking, and saw you. You are so pathetic, that I thought I might try and help you.â
He scowls, lowering the arrow. âWhat do you know? Youâre just a girl.â
For the first time, anger sparks inside her. Arrows held at her throat are fine, but insulting her skill is quite another matter.
The fact that she has no skill to speak of isnât the point.
âGive me your bow and arrow, and Iâll show you,â she says heatedly.
