to me, correctly using 5+ commas in a single sentence is like perfectly executing a combo in a fighting game. to me.
if you think a sentence needs 5+ commas it should be two sentences
it’s not about what the sentence needs, i’m afraid, nor is it about economy, clarity, or style. it’s about winning, little-theatre-fairy.
Comment on my MA thesis:
1$ flea market score. Tiny glass 1960s perfume bottles. I love them.
Can you swap their heads ?
omg you can
Their meeting was foretold in the ancient texts
Seeing a lot of posts like "umm why does everyone love bees and hate wasps, bees are bastards and they sting you why are they the only insect anyone actually cares about, why does everyone hate wasps when they're the same as bees"
Well you see, everyone ALSO used to hate bees. Like. You guys are just too young to remember when everyone who wasn't an apiarist or a gardener or an ecologist was militantly aggressive towards bees Because They Sting You. People would burn their hives and kill them all when they were found, not call a bee guy to relocate them, they'd stomp bees in the clover if they saw them. They actively hunted down and destroyed hives.
The reason "everyone loves bees" isnt an arbitrary whimsical choice because they're cuter than wasps. It's because bee lovers made a HUGE effort to encourage people to see bees as valuable pollinators and friendly little guys that just want to defend their hive. They taught people to see bees as cute and fluffy! There were awareness campaigns about the value of bees, there were advertisements, there were little documentaries and articles teaching people how to readjust their views on bees so that the hatred of them didn't cause complete ecological and agricultural collapse.
Bee lovers used to be in the exact same position that everyone who loves other insects is - you say that you like this creature and everyone in a 10km radius comes crawling over to tell you all the ways they personally would kill them.
The fact that it's so common now for people to think bees are cute fun little guys doing an important job is a fucking monumental victory and it was hard won, and it's as recent as in the last 20 years. When I was a kid in the 90s, everyone hated bees except ecologists and bug guys.
If you want this for wasps too (which i also want) you gotta put the work in to change people's perceptions.

I feel like some people need to relearn Genre Expectations... "Man, this tragedy sucks!!! Why didn't they just do XYZ, then everything could have ended happily!!" well, then it wouldn't be a tragedy, would it. "Man, this lighthearted teen romcom is terrible, it's so sappy and unrealistic!!" Well, yeah. If it had been gritty and dark, it wouldn't have been a lighthearted romcom, would it. Is the writing actually bad or are you just trying to order a milkshake from a Home Depot
Reblogging for
“Is the writing bad or are you just trying to order a milkshake from a Home Depot”
I feel like that should be the canned response to anyone who complains in your fic’s AO3 comments about the [thing] when the [thing] is clearly tagged.
Very curious doggo
Reminder that puffins are extremely social and like to fit in with their friends, so they will adopt mannerisms and interests of the group. So there is a good chance this little guy is trying to be friends with the photographer by showing his interest in the camera.
TIL photographers are a lot like puffins, cuz we also make friends by showing interest in your camera XD
Reminds me of the time researchers were trying to get puffins to land in a specific area so the put decoys up to draw them in but the decoys only had 1 leg and
this is so fucking cute
One of the most important things to unpack and unlearn when you’re part of a white supremacy saturated society (i.e. the global north) and especially if you were raised in an intensified form of it (evangelicism, right wing politics, explicit racism) is the urge to punish and take revenge.
It manifests in our lives all the time and it is inherently destructive. It makes relationships and interactions adversarial for no good reason. It undermines cooperation and good civic order. It worsens some types of crime. It creates trauma, especially in children.
Imagine approaching unexpected or unacceptable behavior from a perspective of "how can this be stopped, and prevented" instead of "you’re going to regret this!”
Imagine dealing with a problem or conflict from the perspective of “how can this be solved in a way that is just and restorative” instead of “the people who caused this are going to pay.”
How much would that change you? How much would that have changed for you?
Please.
hi!!!!! i’m an actual librarian who has encountered this very situation before!!!!! and while i commend & admire op’s willingness to help another patron, this is why you really really should have a library worker, not another patron whom you don’t know, assist you with tech & information related issues in the library!!! because we are trained in how to handle this exact sort of thing
tl;dr: use proton mail. i’m not gonna gatekeep this info. it does not require a cell phone number, so it’s my go to for patrons in this situation!!! while i am acutely aware of the harm done by the digital divide & how many people are getting left behind as our world gets increasingly tech dependent, the situation is not hopeless. there ARE provisions in place to help the people most affected, and those provisions are usually wearing glasses & cardigans & sitting behind the circulation desk
librarians are not glorified bookworms!!!! we are information professionals who are highly trained in how to handle these sorts of seemingly impossible binds!!!! ask us for help!!!!!! as i always tell my patrons, that’s what i get paid the big bucks for

Broke: Imma kick your ass
Woke: You are invited to join me on the
I didn't go all the way to Yorkshire for 72 notes
[ID: A trail sigh for the "Public Footpath to Butt Lane" /End ID]
don't infantilise yourself. you are not a child who needs an adult to make your decisions for you. you are a splendid and magnificent autocrat and you are consulting your trusted advisors. you are exercising great wisdom by inviting an expert to give their opinion before making your ruling. often the path of wisdom is to say "good morning, I'm trying to [perform task] and I have a question about [aspect], can you tell me who I should speak to for advice?" before you do it. sometimes the path of wisdom is to hire a plumber. there are times when you cannot do things for yourself but that doesn't mean you are not an adult. you don't need a grown-up. you need a specialist.
this has come up a couple of times so let me be really really clear:
the path of wisdom is sometimes to hire a plumber.
the path of wisdom is always to hire an electrician.
"It doesn't help your credibility to exaggerate, most employers wouldn't literally work you to death" like, I used to work in distribution. If booking a truck driver for back to back shifts until they fall asleep at the wheel, crash, and die counts as being worked to death, I have personally met employers who've worked employees to death and gotten away with a slap on the wrist. It may not be universal, but it's a hell of a lot more common than a lot of us would prefer to think.
Heart disease is the most common cause of death across all adults worldwide.
Stress is the most common cause of heart disease.
Occupational stress is the most common cause of chronic stress.
MOST EMPLOYERS WILL IN FACT WORK YOU TO DEATH ON A LONG ENOUGH TIMESCALE.
We need to dismantle capitalism for this reason, among many others.
And before the heart disease gets you, there's the possibility of:
Ulcers
Other non-ulcer stomach problems
Literally just falling apart? Crying, losing skills, losing control of emotions and reactions, those people you hear of who are found frozen or passed out
Breakdowns
Lashing out (used to call it going postal, it happened so much to mailrooms)
Random physical illnesses, both bc stress lowers the immune system and leaves you open to germs, and bc stress builds up until your body starts doing weird things trying to get your attention
Hair loss!
I literally ground my teeth so hard, I broke two of them
Worsening of whatever else you have going on
Car crashes from driving home exhausted or from loss of concentration due to being burned out
Everyone's all "ohhh 2026 bring back physical media" until I start talking illuminated manuscripts and then suddenly we're not on the same page anymore
I made an illuminated manuscript skin for AO3? So im doing my part!
This skin makes my pope corpse-fucking fic look so legit!!!!
Truly, memorizingthedigitsofpi is a saint!
the ticks that talk of time to waste all suck the blood of life in haste each tok the clock sounds mocking, makes you mind the pain of brain’s mistakes; a string of seconds, rope of minutes, web of hours catch you caught- and rot you there you’d swear your sin it’s: staying statued, sling un-shot. But not for lack of trying, trying, every Never ever, spent attempting sweating bleeding crying- denying being broken/bent.
uh, this is about executive dysfunction btw

imagine if i didnt have shame. i would be unstoppable
i gave my shame a proper name, so i could cuss it properly, because the losing in the game is all my shame can offer me - and zuko's uncle iroh told me pride is not the antidote: humility will set me free (i've paraphrased his wiser quote) but if i'm feeling humble? i may stumble in my grander plans to be the better busy bumble bee in flower planted lands; so i'm aiming for a balance of demure and knowing that i'm great! to meet my faults with gentle love, and still maintain ambitious traits
