"It's like there's a rope attached to my chest and it keeps pulling me towards you. And it feels so right."
Red, White & Royal Blue has consumed my entire life since I watched the movie and read the book last year. It's such a beautiful story and I fell in love with Alex and Henry and their love.
There are so many kind and talented people in this fandom and I just wanted to say thank you and share some of the joy that you all bring to me.

They move in together full time and Ilya notices that Anya acts differently with Shane than she does with him, more quiet and less playful, and he worries that means she doesnβt like Shane or is jealous, so he hires a dog trainer to come over and see if thereβs anything they need to do to help
After a while of talking about how Anya acts the trainer says thereβs nothing to worry about, Anya likes Shane just fine, itβs just that she sees him as the boss and is acting accordingly
And Ilya is like. But. Iβm the one who adopted her? And raised her before Shane got here?? And the trainer is just like yeah well she sees you more like an equal. And Ilya is like WAIT she thinks Shane is in charge of both of us?? And the trainer is just like well do you interact in a way that would make her think that?
Ilyaβs life flashes before his eyes as he thinks of all the times Shane has come over with a snack for Ilya and a treat for Anya, or all the times Shane has announced theyβre all going for an after dinner walk, or pets Ilyaβs hair and tells him he did a good job at practice, or the fact that he uses the same warning tone with Anya when she misbehaves as he does with Ilya when heβs causing problems on purpose
Shane comes home to Ilya with his face in his hands going oh god Iβm not Anyaβs dad Iβm her brother and she thinks weβre both your pets. And Shane just goes. What.
The Queering the Map project launched in May 2017 so I'm thinking about Shane reading an article on it that summer at the cottage, still warm from an afternoon with Ilya in the sun, then pulling up a little rink in Saskatchewan on it and in a moment of daring posting a pin with "December 2008. Fell in love with him here β€οΈ". A little shiver runs through him, and after some minor anxiety about IP tracking he moves on with his day and eventually forgets.
Years later, one of the rookie Centaurs brings up the map in conversation at a team party and mentions his favorite pin, an odd one at the Saskatchewan rink. Shane goes a little pale but lingers to hear, just in case. The rookie pulls it up on his phone and reads it out:
"December 2008. A shy smile, two handshakes, and a million freckles like stars. I have chased him ever since."

Shane has always been a big napper. When he was young, school really tired him out. So many different people around him for such an extended period of time, expectations of certain behaviour, having to socialise, having to pay attention, having to answer questions, the constant hum of fluorescent lights overhead. He came home exhausted and in need of a nap more often than not. There were also the panics. Sometimes they were big, sometimes they were small, but they usually left him feeling wrung out and he didn't really function well until he'd had a nap after one. Becoming a professional hockey player hasn't changed this, if anything it's made it a useful skill. A little post-practice nap is sometimes just the thing he needs and a pre-game nap can make all the difference to his play. With the constant travelling and endless timezone changes, napping becomes a necessity.
Ilya, however, never quite got the hang of it. He knows a lot of his teammates nap whenever and wherever, falling asleep before games in hotel rooms or resting up on the road, snores filling the team bus or plane, but Ilya can't quite get there. It's probably a remnant from childhood, from not feeling safe enough to let his guard down like that. He can't even imagine what the reaction would have been if his father had come home to find him asleep on the couch. He was certainly quick enough to accuse him of laziness without Ilya handing over additional ammunition for free.
But Ilya loves holding Shane when he naps. He loves how quickly his body grows lax, loves the gradual shift in the depth of his breaths, loves the warmth of his body pressed against him, loves his sleepy little sounds and scrunched little face when he wakes up, loves that Shane trusts him enough to be that vulnerable around him. Shane doesn't really know that Ilya doesn't nap, not with how often Ilya's the one to suggest one, not with the way Ilya makes sure to feign coming out of sleep as soon as he feels Shane shift in his arms in that particular way that suggests he's waking up. He doesn't want to risk Shane feeling like Ilya's doing him a favour with holding him through his naps, doesn't know whether he can admit how much he loves their naps even though they never include Ilya falling asleep. He likes the way things are. He doesn't want to risk it changing.
Eventually it does change though. Not because Shane discovers Ilya's secret of never actually falling asleep but because, a few years into their marriage, Ilya start... actually falling asleep. He never plans to. He loves getting to spend that time resting with Shane while staying alert enough to catalogue his every sleep-muddled sigh, his every shift. He just feels so warm, so full of love, so incredibly safe that one day he just... drifts off. After that it keeps happening. He has Shane in his arms, he's enjoying his breathing, he's loving this moment, he doesn't want to lose consciousness, he wants to stay in it, but his eyelids are drooping. He lets them shut, just for a minute, but then he wakes up to Shane's smiling face, his eyes soft and sleep-warm, his hands gentle as they cradle Ilya's face and run through his curls, and he can't be mad at himself for having missed out on those precious moments if this is what he gets to wake up to. Time is no longer a limited resource. Safety is no longer conditional on remaining alert. He has the rest of his life to enjoy this, to let himself be lulled to sleep by Shane's breathing and waking up to his soft touches. He can let his eyes drift shut and trust that Shane will still be there when he wakes.

SPOILERS FOR TLG. JUST FKN STOP READING HERE TO REMAIN UNSPOILED
I feel the need, as mixed race queer, to explain why it shouldn't be Shane's job to make Montreal better.
There is a lot of discourse that a better ending to TLG is Shane staying on the Metros and somehow browbeating an entire organization into the 21st Century.
This is purported to be taking up space.
I want to be clear. I support queers taking up space. I support racialized people taking up space.
But I also support people doing what they want to make themselves HAPPY as long as no one else is harmed.
First of all, and we see this more in the show than in the book, Shane has always been forced to "take up space." His "Asianess" is something that people have exploited without his express permission his entire career and probably before that.
I would point once more to the great Paul Kariya, whose Japanese identity was used to make hockey interesting in Japan, despite his oft stated desire to not have his racial background constantly highlighted.
Kariya took up space he didn't want to. He wanted people to talk about his hockey. Not his ethnicity. Not his injuries. His skills.
He was incredibly skilled. But always, always, the stories led with "Japanese Canadian Paul Kariya," not "tapped as the next Gretzky Paul Kariya" or "Playmaker Extraordinaire Paul Kariya."
You can bet Shane has put up with the same treatment his entire life.
When Shane is outed, he gets to add another marginalized identity to his list. Which is something Shane has never wanted.
Shane doesn't want to be the poster boy for anything but good hockey. He doesn't want to be good "despite" being mixed, but he's never had the option. He doesn't want to be good "despite" being gay, but now that option has also been taken away from him.
If Shane stays in Montreal, he's just going to continue being the poster boy, because Montreal's team culture is garbage and it goes all the way to the top.
RR alludes to this in the books when she talks about how great the owners are in Ottawa. They hire and promote Harris, they support Troy, they fight the suspension imposed by the league when Ilya is outed, and when Shane signs with Ottawa, they book Ilya and Shane a fancy dinner just for the two of them as a signing gift.
Once again, RR assumes her readers have puck knowledge and will be able to extrapolate based on that. And I refuse to get mad at her for this assumption because WHY ELSE WOULD YOU READ HOCKEY ROMANCE? She couldn't predict the show would bring an influx of fans who love the queerness and have no idea about hockey.
If you know hockey, especially pro hockey, you know the team culture is not set by the team captains, or the coaches. It is set by the General Manager (GM), and the owners.
The owners hire the GM. The GM decides everything about operations: coaches. Admin. And team members.
I know that hockey players are rich. But they are cattle for the NHL. Yes, there are superstars (well paid but powerless). However, most hockey players make NHL base which is about 800k, and have absolutely no choice in what happens to them. They can be traded at any time, sent to the AHL with very little warning, and are basically fodder for the machine.
Let's play a little game:
Without looking at a list, please name all 23 players on any hockey team's roster.
A casual fan probably knows one or two. A more involved fan? Probably 6-8.
Very few will know all 23, and the names change every. Single. year.
The players can do very little to control the team culture. They have no say in trades. They have no say in coaches. They have no say in management.
Hockey players are the servers of the NHL; all the abuse, none of the power.
At least they're paid better.
The discourse posits that a better ending for Shane is to stay in Montreal and overhaul the whole damn place rather than be shuffled off to a lesser team.
Once again I must point out that OTTAWA IS NOT A BAD TEAM AT THE END OF TLG.
Ottawa beat the top ranked team in the fucking league in the playoffs. It doesn't matter if Shane tripped in OT or not; Ottawa going to game 7 against Montreal is a fucking miracle in itself, and a sign of how toxic the Montreal locker room has become.
MOVING ALONG.
A Montreal rebuild from the ground up, ousting the entire coaching staff, the bulk of the players, and the entire management, not to mention the owners, is not feasible at all. That is not how pro hockey works. RR is writing a story about the NHL. She has to play within the NHL's basic rules.
Ottawa has progressive owners, a queer friendly admin, an excellent fucking team, AND the cap space for Shane if they commit to contract flexes that are legal and not even frowned upon.
Montreal was a shit team when Shane was drafted, that's why they had the second overall draft pick.
Shane made them better and got them three cups
Ottawa is already a team that knocked the number one team in the league out of the playoffs.
Shane shouldn't have to drag Montreal kicking and screaming into the future. He deserves the space to be the greatest hockey player of all time. He deserves to enjoy hockey again.
He deserves to make and break records before he retires triumphant as the greatest hockey player of all time with a (modern) record breaking number of cups.
He deserves to play on the same team as his generational talent husband and rule the NHL until he chooses to stop.
He deserves to have his number retired across the entire League for all time.
Queer joy shouldn't HAVE to involve a fuckton of labour to make a space better. Queer joy can be Shane getting exactly what he's always wanted:
This is Shane's queer joy. This is Shane's deepest desire. He doesn't want to lead the charge to make the League better, he wants to play hockey and love Ilya.
Shane is not a human rights trailblazer. Shane is not Gay Hockey Jesus Scott Hunter, openly defying the NHL's preconceived notions of masculinity. He's not Ilya Rozanov, the Pied Piper of Queerlandia, gently guiding people to their true selves. He is a gay man who wants to do the right thing.
Shane has already had to be one poster boy, it's completely unfair to expect him to be another one.
Shane openly defies Crowell, and may be the only player smart enough to use the place he meets Crowell (a single party consent province) to get information that could take Crowell down.
Taking Crowell down might actually start the cycle to clean up the NHL. Why isn't this enough queer crusading? Why can't Shane just be happy?
If we are constantly going to talk about the amount of suffering Shane had had to do in hockey as a racialized player, why can't he just have a fucking break?
Let him go to a really good hockey team where he can sleep next to his husband every fucking night for the rest of their lives if he wants.
The NHL has kept Shane and Ilya apart since they were 17. Why is it specifically Shane's responsibility to make the League better? Why should Shane have to stay and fix Montreal, when he can go to Ottawa, bang his husband, make a ton of money and win a bunch of cups?
And I'll admit, being told I'm letting down the queers earlier has made me extra sensitive. But expecting Shane to do EVEN MORE emotional labour to make a place where he doesn't feel welcome better so he can take up space is unfair.
No one owes anyone emotional labour.
Besides. The NHL, like all pro sports leagues, runs on money. If the Centaurs win a bunch of cups, they will get higher revenues from ticket sales and merch. Maybe the highest in the league.
If the asshole money men who run the League see that an openly liberal, accepting, queer AF team is the highest revenue generator in the league, that will actually go a long fucking way to making the NHL a more open, accepting, queer AF place. So Shane going to Ottawa and securing his legacy via Cup wins will eventually make Montreal, and every other team, better.
Let Shane do what he's the best at (hockey) and enjoy his goddamn life, and you get the same outcome:
A CULTURE SHIFT IN THE NHL.
Once again, no idea how to end this, except maybe its a good idea to learn a little about the NHL, and we should let Shane be fucking happy.
And also, i will clearly do anything to avoid discussing enforcers and the 2011 off season, even revisit this conversation once again from yet another angle.
Here's Ilya kissing Shane's helmet because yay high note endings.
fucking CACKLING after thinking about how seeing ilya made shane's heartrate go down in the hospital because i'm imagining shane being out of it and mildly combative/confused/upset after something like getting his wisdom teeth taken out or something and really ONLY calming down with ilya right next to him, which is very sweet
except for the fact that it's now ilya's turn to be VERY nervous about what shane is going to say in front of his parents in a reversal of shane having about three heart attacks concurrently thinking he was going to have to hear ilya explain the concept of fuckbuddies during the dinner scene
because yes very sweet that shane wasn't listening to ANYONE about rinsing his mouth out until ilya said to do it, but shane's obedience is not limited to heeding medical instructions, and ilya is SWEATING about shane's drugged mind playing connect the dots with how much he likes ilya telling him to do things and deciding to start talking about it
(tags absolutely NECESSARY via @penandinkprincess) #ilya being a very sweet partner and holding a cup up for shane because there's some blood in his mouth after changing the gauze out#and telling him to spit#and shane who is in OUTER SPACE just half-smirking and ilya knows what's coming even before shane slurs out a#'that's not what you usually-' 'SHANE. THE BLOOD. SPIT THE BLOOD OUT OF YOUR MOUTH.'#and there is no way for ilya to tell yuna and david to leave because their son is not audience aware rn#and really likes being bossed around in bed and is thus playing apples to apples in his head with instructions rn#ilya as shane's emotional support in this setting except man is fucking STRESSED#shane's straight chilling and feeling very pampered and safe with ilya#meanwhile ilya has the resting heartrate of someone being hunted for sport#yuna and david both <3 :) enjoying watching their son's partner prove he's a loving and supportive and gentle life partner#and meanwhile ilya is just fucking PRAYING that helping shane put gauze back in his mouth isn't making him think#about things he LIKES having in his mouth#(it is)#shane keeps spitting it back out because Texture Bad#and ilya (not thinking) is just 'stop doing this. i am going to get a bandana or something and you will look like a kidnapping victim.#is this what you want?'#and shane is just *big happy sparkly eyes* 'i mean i liked when you tied a belt ar-'#and ilya just 'NO'#thank GOD yuna and david were talking to the doctor at that moment#but now he can SEE shane thinking about it and being so happy in his memory#and ilya is sitting here listening to discharge instructions just thinking 'don't speak don't speak don't speak don't speak'#as hard as he can at shane
ilya uses the like 0.5 seconds he's got when david is going to get coffee and yuna is stepping into the hall to SO gently take shane's face in his hands and get his attention like "hey, hey, shane, can you focus, please? ye-no, sweetheart, don't touch the gauze again. okay, do you want to be good for me?"
*muffled because there's cotton in his mouth* "yesh :)"
"good, you are always so good for me" *head kiss* "now, i need you to be VERY good and NOT talk until i say so, okay?"
"but you like when i'm loud, don't you?" *big, teary eyes* "you don't want me to tell you when i feel good?" *wobbly lip that would break a FAR harder heart than ilya's, especially when shane also currently has some very cute chipmunk cheeks happening*
"no, no, dorogoy, you know i love all of your pretty words and sounds." *smooch smooch* "but this is a new game, okay? we are trying something new together."
*still slightly sniffly but nod nod* "my shafeword is fashe-off"
*clinging to composure with the tips of his fingers* "yes, very good. but right now you are not going to say ANY words, okay?"
*nod nod and pleased little smile because he remembers The Rules under these circumstances* "then i tap you three timesh"
*SO close to fully having a breakdown* "yes, very good. and now time to be quiet, yes?"
*shane almost hits himself in the face miming zipping his lips shut*
and this works GREAT
...until the nurse asks shane what his pain level is on a scale of 1-10, and shane remains SILENT. and the nurse is, "shane? we can adjust your pain medication if you need. it's not a trick question." and shane just lolls his head over to the side and BEAMS at ilya because Look How Good I Am Being. :)
and ilya is about to just start beating his head against a wall.
in fucking TEARS imagining shane whining through his nose (because not speaking! he remembers The Rules!!) as ilya is now trying to pull his hands away, and the nurse is just "oh, honey, don't worry. no one's going to be selling photos of the two of you holding hands here. we don't let cameras in past the door."
and thank you, ma'am, that's very kind
but it's NOT the fucking issue here
adding @nightquills
because i am truly CACKLING about the idea of shane just inventing his own rules as they go and now ilya has to try and keep him quiet while ALSO solving riddles from HELL trying to figure out what new rules shane is introducing from his own beautiful (drugged) mind
GOD yuna and david are only both there in the first place because ilya has never actually dealt with coming-out-of-sedation shane and while he's very good at handling him normally, shane has a tendency to be a flight risk because he's confused and Not Happy About All Of The Everything, so they wanted to be there just in case
and now they're here still just as backup in case it's needed but also aw :) how sweet :) shane is so calm :) how nice :)
meanwhile ilya is just planning the vacation he's going to reward himself with after this is over
yuna and david are in the front and ilya is in the backseat trying to keep shane from climbing into his lap. shane is like oh he strapped me down. kinky :D meanwhile ilya voice THAT IS YOUR SEATBELT
can ilya even get them to leave once they get home? probably not! david is very helpfully making dinner (soup, so that shane can eat it). ilya is like "okei i'm going to take shane to lay down for a bit until dinner is ready" just trying to get him out of the room that his parents are in. shane takes this to mean it's finally sexytime. ilya is despairing that these meds may never wear off

no but seriously "gimme kiss" plus those big fat pursed lips is one of the sweetest parts of the whole show because their relationship has been characterised by lust from the beginning, it's what they started with and it's what they padded their feelings in before they were ready to let those feelings stand on their own, but in this moment there's not even a hint of lust, there's no ulterior motive to seduce, ilya just wants a moment of connection with shane β physically and emotionally β and he knows now that he doesn't have to do anything to get it. he can be relaxed and silly and he can just ask to receive it. gimme kiss! said in the most mischievous manner ever. and shane gives him kiss!!!!!!!!
The thing is that Shane just fully does not think that he is allowed to break down. He doesn't even think of it in those terms, it's so far from his mind. This is reinforced by the fact that there definitely ARE moments of this fucking...incandescent happiness in the aftermath of the outing. He marries the love of his life and it is genuinely, actually the happiest day of his life. He is fully present, he remembers every moment of that day with the utmost fondness. And the next day he wakes up naked under the sheets with his husband and it's the safest he's ever felt.
But last week they had to install new security cameras on their house because their outing made them Actual Famous instead of just Hockey Famous and there have already been threats, at least one of them credible. And two weeks ago SNL aired a skit about them the punchline of which was basically just the worst moment of Shane's life played over and over again for laughs. He is so afraid that Ilya is going to start wanting to die again that it keeps him up at night. He's trying to Amy Dunne Cool Girl it through so many different things. Food, social events, sometimes even sex although this is in the context of sex being one of the only times he feels fully normal and he is trying to frame this as the natural result of being a newlywed instead of as physically needing his body reset, sometimes several times a day. So he's coaxing Ilya into the bedroom and he's smiling and saying, "I just can't keep my hands off you," and what he really means is please put your hands on me and hold me together for a little bit longer but even he doesn't really know that's what he's asking for.
He is actually, genuinely happy to get to play hockey with his husband. Just as happy as he used to be when they played against each other all those years--which are such fond memories now tarnished by the constant fucking cheating allegations.
He's happy that he gets to walk down the street with his husband now--of course he fucking is. Butz again: they are Actual Famous now and the media cycle is obsessed with the idea that their marriage is essentially one of convenience and hurdling towards disaster. The prevailing theory is that they were caught essentially hooking up and had to marry each other as a PR move. Nevermind the multiple times that they have alluded to the timeline of their relationship.
And there are stressors that have nothing to do with fame, really. The owner of a local Russian restaurant recognizes Ilya just as a customer one day while he and Shane are sitting on the patio of coffee shop having lunch and the restaurant owner approaches Ilya and just launches into a conversation in Russian and Shane is halfway out of his seat before he realizes that Ilya is smiling and doesn't seem threatened. He has to walk around the block to calm himself down.
It gets to the point where he is just constantly low-level buzzing and he only feels absolutely normal when he is alone with his husband, usually when he's literally under him, and when he's on the ice.
But he's fine. He'll be fine. He's so fucking happy.
