So it’s not quite snowing on Churyumov–Gerasimenko, unfortunately; the white specks are artifacts of cosmic rays impinging on the CCDs in the camera, as well as a rotating starfield in the background (since the comet is spinning). A few specks could be dust. But, holy shit, that’s the surface of a comet. That’s a spot you could in theory cling to for dear life sit down on. The Cliffs of Comet 76p are a place.

If that isn’t the neatest shit I don’t know what is.

On the one hand, a lot of the talk abt the power and menace of AI-driven facial recognition software is overblown because, to be perfectly frank, none of the software is very good. A lot of the people reporting on it are just repeating the ad copy published by the companies selling the software.

On the other hand, it isn't overblown at all because so-called forensic science has always been pretty shit but that hasn't stopped prosecutors from being able to convince jurors that cops have magic powers

#what worries me more is how much people seem to THINK it's reliable #just like stuff like lie detector tests which are also unreliable #it doesn't matter because if a bunch of people think it magically works #it's going to be used to unfairly prosecute a bunch of people

Waves will not bow to your physical prowess no matter how impressive.

Shock does not care that you used to be on your school swim team.

If you hit your head, being good at swimming isn't going to turn you face-up while you're unconscious.

You may be unable to return to shore. Rescue may be unable to find you quickly.
