On places like Discord, for example, a child can't access adult channels. An adult can still access channels minors are in. It would take one. /1/. Predatory moderator or admin to sift out which people are minors. And suddenly every single minor in that server is at risk. And that's just Discord.

More than that. We've just had it exposed that a great many people in positions of power are pedophiles/sex criminals.

Those same people are in charge of bigger things than a singular app, and have friends in charge of more things than they personally are. They have access to your personal data, as they are in government. They are in position to and can access even your metadata without you ever knowing.

Trafficking starts with location and opportunity. Every photo, every video a hapless minor uploads gives metadata. Often times they contain landmarks to find where the minor is anyway.

On things like Facebook/META, minors post pictures of themselves on /special teen-specific accounts/!

Hell, even here on Tumblr minors happily go into groups full of strangers and go "Hi! Minor here 🤪".

The intent is that enforcement will have an easier time catching predators grooming and luring kids online, but that would also be a huge boon to cyberstalkers.

One of the root problems of our society is a refusal or inability by media to articulate that all those “it’s gonna be an apocalypse” disasters were not disasters because we collectively did something about them.

The good news is this is actually quite correctable. I maintain my firm belief that we as humans are capable of solving almost all of our problems, when we decide to do so.

And I still think that’s going to happen. I don’t know when or how, but I do know that abandoning hope won’t help bring it about.
