As he drove at a sedate pace towards his destination, Obi-Wan huffed, trying to get comfortable. After so many years of exclusive use, every time he didn’t wear his Jedi robes left him unbalanced, the familiar feeling of ease gone in the face of the plain civilian clothes he was wearing now. A necessity, since he didn’t want anyone to associate a Jedi to where he was going, not keen of having his unauthorised vacation reaching the Council’s ears. Even so, Obi-Wan thought with vague amusement and a touch self-deprecation at the deception he was weaving, they should have realised by now that his so called meditation retreats were not what he presented them as. - or, Obi-Wan returns to his dear one. It’s almost funny how he thought a hiking trip could fix everything in him that had broken so exquisitely. How he imagined a few months in the woods would turn him into a new person, separate him from his need to cling to everything he knows like it might slip out of his grasp if he isn’t holding on as tightly as humanly possible.

19 year old Anakin has just lost his mother and his place at university for the time being. Forced into a semester off to save his tanking grades, he decided to make meaning out of his life in the only way imaginable: escape into the mountains on the other side of the country and hike the Appalachian Trail.

Obi-Wan fights his own grief by going on a planned through-hike of the Appalachian Trail which was supposed to be a last hurrah with his dying father. After an accident takes him earlier than expected, Obi-Wan hits the trail alone, and he has no plans to change that.

Obi-Wan doesn’t expect to attract the lost boy who comes as unprepared for a through hike as possible; after begrudgingly taking in an inexperienced Anakin, the hike feels like something completely new. Together, they face their grief, figure out what it means to live instead of just survive, and make major decisions about what comes after a seven month through hike.

After a fight with 40 miles left to hike, everything comes to a head when Anakin doesn’t show up to the shelter they agreed to meet at. Obi-Wan must admit how much he cares about this boy as he takes to the trail alone to find him before anything worse than getting lost and possibly injured can happen.

But when their relationship gets more complicated after a drunken rendezvous at a ball, Anakin is at a loss what to do. His love for his Master nearly made him join Sidious — how could it help either of them recover after the war?

Seriously, when I commissioned @nickytess a couple of months ago, I knew she was talented, but holy !@#$%!@#$% shite, this artwork went beyond my expectations. When I presented my idea to Nicky, I did emphasise that this would be a background heavy request. And when I presented my entire idea, I was stoked that Van Gogh is one of her favourite artists! What a happy coincidence!

I had envisioned this scene of Anakin pointing out Tatooine's three moons to Obi-Wan during their visit to Shmi and the Lars family. The AU of them being a happy couple visiting Anakin's childhood home with "The Starry Night" scheme wouldn't leave me alone, so that was when I reached out to Nicky . . .

And she delivered beautifully. This is such a breathtaking art. I'm so blown away by this piece. I'd planned on making a photo tile of this finished work, and I will definitely move forward with that idea.
