zero stars for nolan because odysseus, on his journey home to ithaca, was NOT visited by a ghost that tells him that once he reaches his home, once he slays all his enemies and sets his house in order he must do one last thing before he can rest. the ghost does NOT tell him to pick up an oar, walk inland, keep walking, until somebody mistakes that oar for a shovel. for that would be the place that no man has ever been troubled by the sea. and that's where he'd find peace.

half considering cold emailing my professor from undergrad to get her take on nolanâs odyssey
looking at my tirade from yesterday like yeah maybe i could have phrased some of that better but i stand by what i said
Alright ive seen enough
Someone put a blanket over my cage.
ânolanâs odyssey is a take on the effects of war on a personâs psycheâ im glad we got another movie about how we need to feel bad for the (white) soldier that killed people because look how much killing those people affected him. i think that we were really lacking in movies that explored that perspective
i really did try to go into it with an open mind. like admittedly ive seen a lot over the past year that made me apprehensive at best but i tried really really hard to set aside preconceived notions and not just look for negatives. and i am glad i watched it because the criticisms i had walking in are not necessarily the ones i left with, but iâm able to articulate those criticisms far more clearly than i would be able to if i were trying to piece it together from what other people had to say. like i gave it a shot, i watched it myself, and now i can articulate my complaints with confidence and engage in informed dialogue and discussion about why i thought it was ass. <3

AND DONT GET ME FUCKING STARTED ON THE CYCLOPS
like on top of being a dogshit adaptation itâs also just. a bad movie
actually can't get over how terribly christopher nolan treated the black women in the odyssey
like. i don't think any of the women in the odyssey are treated well by nolan (penelope and circe in particular have their characters ruined to make odysseus seem smarter and more honourable) but there's something so nasty about casting a black woman as athena, goddess of wisdom, war, and handicraft, the character who arguably drives most of the post ogygia plot in the poem, and choosing to ignore all of that in favour of a mute hallucination of a girl who was raped and murdered whose only function in the film is to add to the guilt the white male lead feels over the atrocities he committed. or casting a dark skinned black woman as the most beautiful woman in the world, and then having her husband carve up her face to disfigure her as punishment for being so beautiful that she was kidnapped
those things don't happen in the poem either. it's all a choice by christopher nolan to do that
like ok we can let circe talk about how she turned odysseusâ men into pigs because she couldnât trust them! they would have harmed her! but only if we go out of our way to have those men reassure her that they have no intent to hurt her. because of course we canât have our âgood guysâ be the type of men who would brutalize and rape women simply because they could. so these men never would have hurt circe! but see weâre ACKNOWLEDGING that she feels that they might have. donât you see how we made her look irrational and vindictive and cruel but in an empowering way??
no see melantho WANTED to help antinous. she chose to betray penelope! and it was a betrayal of penelope and not a betrayal of odysseus so see look how empowering it is when penelope throws melantho out into the slaughter of the suitors! melantho the slave girl had agency and she chose to be with antinous so itâs okay that we allowed her to be slaughtered brutally! feminism!
we could NEVER include odysseusâ hanging of the enslaved women after the slaughter of the suitors. we canât have our hero odysseus do such a thing! weâll let penelope do it though :) just a little bit with melantho but she deserved it :3 feminism <3
see look we cast a black woman as helen of troy! famously one of the most beautiful women in all of greek mythology surely you canât have a problem with that! ignore the fact that we added a part where her husband deliberately mutilated her as punishment for being so beautiful. and look! we let her play her âtwinâ sister clytemnestra too â yes, the clytemnestra that brutally murdered her husband but we explained why it was justified! black women should be allowed to play violent characters! would you rather us cast NO black women? donât you know these are the only two options?
itâs okay though because we also cast zendaya as athena and utterly defanged her. sheâs in virginal white robes the whole time and she plays the divine manifestation of odysseusâ guilt over the sack of troy. sheâs no warrior goddess, she would never condone war or violence! good women donât do such things!
we gave all these women agency donât you see! we let them talk about and address these problems! and donât worry, all the main male âheroâ characters really are good guys who would never really do anything to hurt them. so really the women didnât really need to go into all of that but we want YOU to know that Theyâre Strong Women who would never let themselves be victimized by the patriarchal ideals that theyâre subjected to. in fact, we did our best to remove the evidence of these ideals at all! thatâs why we made sure the good guys would never treat women badly. look we absolved them AND we let the women call them out. sure now it looks like most of the women are overreacting and vindictive because we didnât want to make you think about our Heroes doing those things ever in the first place. but thatâs fine right because really we did BOTH things you wanted us to do so why are you complaining?
in case anyone was wondering. the odyssey was bad
not like âoh this was a poor adaptation theyâve bastardized the story homer would be horrifiedâ good news! homer didnât exist. the whole point of adaptation is to take a story and spin it and do something different with it. i wasnât expecting a verse by verse 1:1 reenactment. itâs a wholly different medium so that would make for a pretty shit movie. i would expect and honestly even hope for there to be creative choices made that make it different than the source material.
however IN MY OPINION those creative choices sucked lmfao. the story they chose to tell was trite and uninteresting and also pushed some pretty sinister narratives that seem likely to go largely unnoticed and/or unexamined. judging by the applause from everyone in the theater i was in tonight. which is pretty disheartening and also alarming icl
also i stand by my original take that matt damon was abysmal casting
