When it comes to this election, what I am more than anything is deeply, deeply disturbed.
I honestly thought we were smarter than this. I thought we were improving, moving forward. At the very least, I thought the majority could see how dangerous this caricature of a man was.
And I am left profoundly perturbed. As if I’d been living with another person for twenty years, and one day they revealed something about them that was so antithetical to their nature, so shocking, so alarming, that it called the entire relationship into question.
For me, that something is the apparent willingness of the majority of Americans to elect a leader who is openly bigoted, xenophobic, racist, and misogynistic, a man who would at worst assault me and at best, rate me a four; over a woman. America has truly shown me what the vast majority thinks of me and how much it values people like me, and this sort of disrespect is not something I can tolerate in the place where I live.
As such, having voted in the election and been stymied, I am electing now to take a new option like the one I would take with a person who revealed such a shocking, deplorable thing. You will hear many people giving lip service to the idea of leaving the country due to the outcome of the election when they read about it in the papers tomorrow morning, but happily, I already have a concrete plan to leave which I will shortly begin to put in motion. There will be no lip service here.
America, the actions of your majority have left me seriously concerned about your sanity and future well-being. I don’t see it working out between us anymore. And in fact, I’ve already met a nice person from Canada, so...
I think it’s time for us to break up.
