Hi! I've decided I'm actually going to do OC Dynamics Month, or at least try to, so we're catching up today. This is a quick snippet about two of my OCs, Maddie and Angela, which won't actually appear in the story.
Maddie meets Angela outside Liv's house, just like she said she would.
Liv is still inside, talking to Rumi. Rumi had been in a pretty bad state when she saw her: just about ready to run straight out the door and kill Hester already. Maddie had tried to calm her down, but she would only listen to Liv. Whatever. She has her own business.
Angela is standing against the wall, her arms crossed. When she hears the door close behind Maddie, she flinches, her whole body going rigid as her curls bounce like someone had snapped them. Maddie takes a tentative step towards her.
"You asked me to come out here?"
"Yeah. Uh... yeah. I did. I just... I guess I had a question."
Maddie takes a few deep breaths, five seconds in, five seconds out. This is a good thing. If she has a question, she cares about the answer.
"Go on."
"I just..." Angela uncrosses her arms, gripping one hand tightly in the other. Maddie wants to reach out and take the younger girl's hand, hold her tightly like she might have done all those years ago. But she stays right where she is. "You said something in there. Was it... did you mean it?"
The fight in Liv's dining room flashes through Maddie's thoughts. She hadn't been able to take her eyes off Angela the entire time. She'd told them all that she'd talked to Isaiah before he died, warned him not to antagonize Hester or he'd end up like the others, or worse. And then Angela had said it:
“What was it any of your business what Isaiah did? You weren’t friends.”
“It was my business because of you. Because I knew it would break your heart if something happened to him. I didn’t want to see you go through that.”
“And yet you couldn’t do the bare minimum of not providing Hester with an alibi?”
“What would you have done if you were me?”
“I don’t know! Not that! I wouldn’t have been you!”
“I know. I’m really sorry. I don’t even have the words for how sorry I am. If I could go back and do things differently, help Isaiah somehow, I would.”
“Would you, though? Are you really that different now?”
"Did I mean what? Which part?"
"The... I don't know. That you would do things differently now? That you didn't want me to get hurt? All of it? I don't know. Forget it. I'm sorry." Angela looks out towards the street, but she doesn't leave.
"Don't apologize to me. You're never allowed to apologize to me ever again."
"You really feel sorry for what you did?"
"Of course I do. Every minute of every day."
Angela squints. "I wish there were a way to prove that."
Maddie sighs. She takes a step towards the wall, leans against it, so that she's only a foot or two away from Angela now. Angela doesn't stop her.
"I mean, that's what I've been doing with Liv, I guess. She's trying to expose Hester for what she did. And I guess that's the closest thing..."
"It's not the same, though," Angela snaps. "No matter what she does -- what you do -- Isaiah will still be gone, and you will always be the person who helped Hester cover it up."
"I know. And besides, Liv's been doing most of the work. I've barely done anything but help with her spreadsheets and accompany her to a couple of interviews."
"I guess what you need to prove," says Angela, "is that you're not a coward anymore. That if Hester asks you for something again, you'll say no."
"It's not that easy -- "
"It would be for me!"
"Well, you're not the same as me, Angela!" Maddie shouts. Shit. Too loud. Too much. But Angela doesn't move. She looks Maddie in the eye, her eyes sparkling with something Maddie almost recognizes. "You're rich, and you're not always playing fucking keep-up with your social status, and it doesn't matter what anyone thinks of you, and if I had said no to Hester, she would have ruined me forever! She doesn't care about you!"
She regrets it the instant she says it. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, Angela. I didn't mean to imply --"
"No, that's good. Keep doing that," says Angela. "But next time do it to Hester."
"That's not... it's not the same."
"Look," says Angela. "I don't know if I can ever forgive you. My brother is gone and you made it easier for them to kill him. That's not the kind of thing we can come back from. But... but I know what I need from you. Can you do that for me?"
Angela, in front of her, isn't fifteen anymore. She's eleven, standing unsure with her gangly doe legs in the doorway to the cafeteria, not sure where to sit. And Maddie is thirteen, watching her from the table at the front, something warm and familiar washing over her. I'd do anything for you.
Maddie didn't say anything, but something in her face must have changed, because Angela continues. "Whatever Liv needs from you so she can do this... do it. If she needs you to make a spreadsheet, obviously keep doing that. But if she needs you to distract Hester, or stand in front of her and protect her from people throwing shit from the back rows of the auditorium, or get up in front of the whole school and say 'I believe every single thing she just said and Hester and her friends can go fuck themselves', you're going to do that too. Because... because you already let me down. But you haven't let her down yet. And if you can be brave for her, if you can stand up for her, then..."
Angela doesn't say it. Maddie knows.
"I can do that."
Angela moves slightly towards Maddie, her arms rising slightly above her waist like she's about to throw her arms around her. But she doesn't. She shoves her hands in her pockets.
"You love her, do you?"
"Liv? Yeah. She's... she's..." The words get stuck in Maddie's throat. "She's a good person. Best I've ever known."
"I like her, too. She's a lot like Isaiah."
Angela is daring Maddie to say something. And Maddie is sick of not taking dares.
"Yeah. She is. But she's not gonna end up the same way. She's gonna get whatever the hell she wants. Because she's got a friend named Maddie, and she's going to lay down her life before she lets anything happen to her."
Maddie wonders, for a second, if it's raining. Angela's cheeks are gleaming.
"Wonder what she's doing in there with Rumi," Angela murmurs. "I think she likes her."
"I think so too," says Maddie. "I haven't been able to get rid of her for god knows how long. Ever since she rescued Liv back in January."
"Think she's got a chance?"
"Maybe. I know Liv thinks she's cute, but I don't know anything more than that." Pause. "Rumi liked Isaiah too?"
"Yeah. A lot. That thing you said about not being able to get rid of her? Imagine what that was like for *me*. She was over at our house so often we almost bought an extra mattress for her."
"Oh my *god*. I'll have to ask Liv tomorrow how that went."
"When you do, tell me," says Angela, and she hasn't forgiven her, and nothing has changed, but the sun is setting, and they're gossiping, and they're going to talk again, and the hard part isn't over, it's only just begun, but Maddie Stone isn't quite as scared anymore.
