Scientist bakes sourdough bread with yeast derived from 4500 year old Egyptian pottery
i'm losing my mind @ this thread......historie......
also please note that this scientist is in fact the retired man who invented the xbox.
oh fuck i listened to a podcast that was interviewing him and the process he went through to make this bread, ologies with allie ward like he went through full on clean room levels of prep to ensure that this was 100% yeast from old egypt and had to bend over backwards to ensure everything involved was uncontaminated he then revealed that the original xbox logo...
is a sourdough boule
Everyoneâs posting their favorite vines, so I thought Iâd hop on this bandwagon.
this is absolutely the best compilation ive seen
I love how both corvids and parrots are in general highly intelligent, but where corvids generally have strict hierarchies, solve disagreements in the pecking order by fighting, and have a strong dislike for anything new or foreign until they figure out how to make use of it, parrots are just here to party.
The New Caledonian crow, who knows how to specifically build a tool in order to build another tool, never engages in play. These motherfuckers are smarter than some people with the right to vote, and they are Extremely Serious Birds. They don't have time to play, they got work to do and kids to raise.
And then there's the kea, straight-up titled "clown of the mountains", that has a specific vocalization for "playtime!". Scientists decided to try what happens if they play the Play Call for two fully-grown adult keas that are together in an area and can clearly see there is no other, third kea to make the call, and they just go "great idea, disembodied voice! it's TIME TO FUCKING PARTY!" and start wrestling.
Imagine working really hard in order to make it into a top university to study astrophysics, making it to your first Very Serious Class, sitting down full of serious determination, and the dude next to you is taking notes without using his hands, with a glitter pen he's shoved up his nose. And his notes are good.
It's your first day of Bird University and you already fucking hate this guy.
So there's this gene in humans called PLXNC1 or "Plexin", right? So Plexin is associated with increased neuron function and is generally thought to be correlated to human's increased cognitive ability for the use of language, i.e., "language learning". Super cool, right?
Humans aren't the only animals with advanced language learning that have Plexin in their genome. We can actually find homologous plexin between humans and PARROTS!
Using genomic alignment search tools, we can actually break down the sequence of human Plexin and directly compare it to the Plexin found in parrots. (This was actually a project I ran for an upper division genomics class, and running the program literally takes like... ten minutes.) I wanted to see how similar the plexin gene was between humans and parrots, so I queued up the human sequence against all of the available records from parrot genomes and sorted by greatest percent identity (i.e., which bird species had the closest plexin to ours?)
It was this funky dude right here:
THAT'S RIGHT BABY! The kea, notorious for being a straight up motherfucking prank god, carries Plexin with a 79.42% identity comapred to humans'.
THIS LITTLE ASSHOLE HAS A HOMOLOGOUS LANGUAGE LEARNING GENE WITH US!!!! A GENE THAT IS THOUGHT TO BE CORRELATED TO HIGHER LEVEL LEARNING AND INTELLIGENCE!!!!! AND THEY USE THEIR INTELLIGENCE TO WREAK HAVOC ON TOURISTS
Also these guys have been found to literally have predictive reasoning skills, which we consider REALLY FUCKING ADVANCED for a lot of animal species. They pass the Aesop's fable test with flying colors. They're so goddamn cool, I love them so much. The kea really said: "I will use my superior intelligence to have a good fucking time" and that's so powerful honestly
One time at the zoo, a kea chewed a hole in my pants because I ran out of treats to give him.
reblogging for the Plexin thing, which is fascinating, and also to join the chorus of calling OP on their bullshit because corvids are extremely playful animals. LikeâŠtheyâre kinda extremely famous for loving to get up to mischief. There is a reason why Raven is a Trickster archetype in quite a few cultures. As a matter of fact, they create and use tools FOR PLAY.
I'll never not reblog this. (Not least because something tells me that one kea has a whole nestful of sunglasses somewhere.)
I love that there appears to be a scientific reason why Untitled Goose Game has done so well.

That ball of shiny blue Houses everybody anybody ever knew -Chris Hadfield, âI.S.S. (Is Somebody Singing)â
i want you all to know that there is an artist (carmen papalia) who, after he started using a white cane, assembled a 12 foot long white cane and began using it in downtown vancouver. the length of the cane made it functionally useless as a device and the only purpose it served was making him an obstacle for sighted people. dare i say⊠2019 goals
therapist to sighted patient: long cane isnt real and it cant hurt you
carmen papalia:
[id: a dimly lit photo of carmen papalia using his 12 foot âlong caneâ piece. he walks casually behind it. the cane takes up the majority of both the photograph and the sidewalk.]
Okay I went to a conference where this guy was a keynote and heâs so fucking cool. Heâs done a ton of art around disability rights. The twelve-foot cane is really cool, but here are some of my other favourites:
From the series on replacing his cane, this is one where he replaced his cane with a megaphone and would stand at intersections repeating âI canât seeâ until somebody would stop and help him cross the street
Another cane replacement, this time replacing it with a high school marching band who would change the music depending on if there was something in the way or not.
A museum intervention where he got people at the MET to go through the museum with their eyes closed and experiencing touching things heâd gotten permission to touch (the floor in this image) and just exploring a visual art museum blind.
The Blind Field Shuffle, in which he has dozens of people form a conga line behind him with their eyes closed and leads them on a blind tour of the city - literally the blind leading the blind.
Wish I could find a better photo, but this is a museum gallery he curated where the works are almost at floor height, making them accessible to children, little people, and people in wheelchairs, but requiring abled people to bend down or sit on the floor in order to see them properly.
In short, this man is amazing and I love his work.
idâs in order
[begin id 1 of 5: a photo of carmen papalia from the upper torso up holding a megafone to his face while walking on a sidewalk. He is at the forefront of the image in the cameraâs left corner, and the megafone takes up a lot of the corner. behind his head stretches the sidewalk and road, with a fence and trees on the other side of the sidewalk on the cameraâs right. heâs speaking through the megafone with a neutral expression. it has captions that read: âI canât see youâ four times. end id 1 of 5]
[begin id 2 of 5: a photo taken across the street from where carmen papalia is standing at a crosswalk and facing the camera with a marching band behind him. the marching bandâs conductor has his back to the camera and is in the middle of conducting as some people watch from the cameraâs right. end id 2/5]
[begin id 3/5: a photo of two people who are kneeling on the floor of a museum, one has straight mid length dark hair, the other has long hair tied back. The one with their hair tied back is guiding the other personâs hands along the floor, both look happy. there are museum goers in the background and to the cameraâs right. end id 3/5]
[begin id 4/5: a photo taken of carmen papalia walking down a sidewalk towards the camera with his cane. he is leading a long group of people who have their eyes closed. half the line is approaching a turn in the sidewalk that the others have already taken. most of them look happy. Carmen and people close behind him have more neutral faces. there is an onlooker from the cameraâs right who looks like an officer of some type, his expression is neutral. end id 4/5]
[begin id 5/5: a photo taken from a low pov of a museum display where all the images are close to the ground. Someone is standing close to the camera but facing away, i think itâs carmen papalia. there are a few people sitting on the floor looking at the artwork. end id 5/5]

love wins actually
This works as an answer to the metaphorical problem because the key is for the hedgehogs and prcupines to be a bit flexible about how they position themselves and keep thier spines pointed in such a fashion to minimize poking, just like how in human relationships you have to be a bit flexible and concious of your position relative to others, and to manage your sharp bits to minimize the harm you do to others.
Fever is a hilarious immune response. Our bodies tell the disease âhey, wanna see which one of us dies of overheating first? No? Too bad.â and honestly theyâre not even the winners a decent chunk of the time but it works often enough that we never evolved it away or anything. Fantastic work.

in batman 2022 bruce wayne's parents were killed in 2001 he would have been like 10? i think. the black parade was released in 2006 when he would have been ambiguously high school aged and obviously very emo and unpopular. what i'm saying here is that i think battinson heard the lyrics "when i was a young boy my father took me into the city to see a marching band he said son when you grow up will you be the savior of the broken, the beaten, and the damned" and decided to become batman then and there.
I hurt my back pretty reasonably at work today and unfortunately I couldnât stop laughing because my first thought was âworkplace injury barbieâ
sorta like this
I had to do it

you know whoâs gay? paul the real estate novelist who never had time for a wife and davey whoâs still in the navy and probably will be for life
New headcannon: everyone in that song is gay except the Piano Man who has no idea heâs playing at a gay bar and the staff and regulars have a betting pool on how long heâll take to finally figure it out. So far John is ahead.
âThe manager gives me a smile âcause he knows that itâs me theyâve been coming to seeâ also implies that the Piano Man is possibly an incredibly attractive but oblivious himbo, and if you listen to the rest of it imagining that, this all fits a little too well.
this makes too much sense. Also, the full quote is âNow John at the bar is a friend of mine. He gets me my drinks for free. And heâs quick with a joke or to light up your smoke. But thereâs someplace that heâd rather beâ Yes, your bed, he wants to be on your bed honey, thatâs not a joke, he is flirting with you.
Lighting another manâs cigarette is some old-school gay cruising.
