Today is World Bipolar Day. March 30th was chosen because it is Vincent Van Gogh's birthday and he was diagnosed after death with this illness. Bipolar Disorder affects 5.7 million adult Americans and 1 in 5 patients commit suicide. Most people aren't diagnosed until their 20s or 30s because symptoms are often dismissed in teenagers as "typical teenage mood swings". I was diagnosed 5 years ago (age 16) and when the psychologist told my parents, they realized looking back at my childhood that the symptoms were always there. I'm very fortunate to have friends and family who love and support me, and also that I've never gotten to the point where I'd consider harming myself or others. Others are much less fortunate. Because of the stigma surrounding mental illness, many patients deal with unsupportive friends and family. The stigma of bipolar being a dangerous disease is perpetuated by the media and society by only talking about bipolar when there's some sort of crime involved (ie Criminal Minds criminals and mental illness only being brought up after mass shootings). Just like with any illness, the patients need treatment and support. We all need to work to end the stigma. Don't let people suffer and go untreated like Van Gogh did, reach out and help the ones around you. Thanks to @acupof_katie for letting me know!
