funniest yet most enlightening conversation on this whole social media ban topic, by two girls sat across from me on the bus the other day:
"what do they mean by social media? does Roblox count? what about all the stuff I've built?"
"you'll be fine, doesn't your icloud say you're 34?"
"oh my god they're even banning Facebook. who the fuck is on Facebook"
i hate it when people ask me to "explain my thought process" like hell if i know
"what's going on in that head of yours?" nothing i want to be a part of
“people shouldn’t have to accept the bare minimum-” I agree with that too but we’re at a point where we have to cling to the bare minimum or that will be taken away too
reminds me of when I was on a date with a girl and the police were breaking up a homeless encampment. She said "They found people who had nothing... then they took that too"
all oppression is basically the same.
not she berry or he berry but no berry
and that is berry good

‘bread is bad for you’ ‘rice is bad for you’ sorry im not subscribing to the idea that staple grains that have been integral to cultures for centuries are evil. i love you carbs
I’ll never forget when I was arguing with a person in favor of total prison abolition and I asked them “what about violent offenders?” And they said “Well, in a world where prisons have been abolished, we’ll have leveled the playing field and everyone will have their basic needs met, and crime won’t be as much of an issue.” And then I was like “okay. But…no. Because rich people also rape and murder, so it isn’t just a poor person thing. So what will we do about that?” And I don’t think they answered me after that. I’m ashamed to say I continued to think that the problem was that I simply didn’t understand prison abolitionists enough and that their point was right in front of me, and it would click once I finally let myself understand it. It took me a long time to realize that if something is going to make sense, it needs to make sense. If you want to turn theory into Praxis (I’m using that word right don’t correct me I’ll vomit) everyone needs to be on board, which mean it all needs to click and it needs to click fast and fucking clear. You need to turn a complex idea into something both digestible and flexible enough to be expanded upon. Every time I ask a prison abolitionist what they actually intend to do about violent crime, I get directed to a summer reading list and a BreadTuber. It’s like a sleight-of-hand trick. Where’s the answer to my question. There it is. No wait, there it is. It’s under this cup. No it isn’t. “There’s theory that can explain this better than I can.” As if most theory isn’t just a collection of essays meant to be absorbed and discussed by academics, not the average skeptic. “Read this book.” And the book won’t even answer the question. The book tells you to go ask someone else. “Oh, watch this so-and-so, she totally explains it better than me.” Why can’t you explain it at all? Why did you even bring it up if you were going to point me to someone else to give me the basics that you should probably already know? Maybe I’m just one of those crazy people who thinks that some people need to be kept away from the public for everyone’s good. Maybe that just makes me insane. Maybe not believing that pervasive systemic misogyny could be solved with a UBI and a prayer circle makes me a bad guy. But it’s not like women’s safety is a priority anyway. It’s not like there is an objective claim to be made that re-releasing violent offenders or simply not locking them up is deadly.
Tbh if you believe there are ontologically bad people there's never going to be an answer to prison abolition that satisfies you.
Prison abolition is not an answer the question "what do we do with the perpetrators of harm", its solutions are for "how do we heal the harmed."
Prisons perpetrate harm, so they must be abolished.
"What about violent offenders?"...we heal the people who were harmed.
That's it. That's the answer.
Prisons abolitionists really are like "prisons causes harm that's why we should do my solution : mob lynching" and expect to be taken seriously
Prison abolitionists really say "we piss on the poor!" and expect to be taken seriously
I was trying to figure out if I believed in ontological evil or not. My first thought was what is the alternative to prison? Well Star Trek used penal colonies, a separate place where people received counseling and rehabilitation and it’s like oh this is like Norway’s prisons. But then I remembered in voyager that Tom Paris didn’t rehabilitate in the penal colony and talked derisively about his experiences there. But then while serving on Voyager he gains a sense of duty and belonging that he always lacked and the penal colony didn’t fix. He got a promotion, got a wife, and then got a kid. Well he wasn’t violent.
But then what is violence really? Rape and murder and assault are physically violent. But is it not also violence when an asthmatic takes their last breaths because their insurance company rejected their prescription for a rescue inhaler? An old woman dies alone from dementia because they couldn’t afford an attendant in old age? Is economics not violence? Are policy choices that kill millions not also violence? Is it not true after all that those who burn crosses are the same that work forces?
One would argue then that the incentive system is the problem. What’s the incentive system for corporate murder? Capitalism. So if we abolished capitalism that would ideologically but not practically solve the root of the vast majority of the violent crime we deal with. Almost all of which is the result of structures of power inherent to capitalism and feudalism.
That leaves what I imagine one thinks of when they think of ontological evil, shit like Ted Bundy in real life or Hannibal Lecter in fiction. Well, banner it or not, under the current scientific standards used in most court systems, forensic odontology is no longer allowed. So if his trial occurred today, he would’ve walked. But he did confess to them, so we can use Bundy as an example. For one, he only got as far as he did thanks to the utter lack of care shown by local and state law in enforcement of crimes against women. Only sgywr many had died did police begin to act seriously. This is the case with many of these serial murderers. Second, when one reads interviews and case files into many of these murderers, one notifies disturbing trends of childhood victimization by parents or loved ones, generally dealing with economic or drug issues that were taboo to discuss or get help for. Another large percentage were dhuldren and teens who demonstrated antisocial characteristics and never received assistance in learning to deal with those feelings.
This suggests that economic violence plays a large part in physical violence, even when the link isn’t immediately evident. Political hierarchies create perverse structures of power that create cyclical violence where a percentage of victims become abusers who then commit violence on others ad infinitum. This is partially correlated by data demonstrating a statistically significant increase in reports of abuse and violent crime during economic recessions.
Abolition of power structures inherent and necessary to capitalism and its predecessors is an inherent pre requisite to prison abolition because once that occurs and is maintained, society can implement new systems of justice and mediation free of systemic signals.
As one can imagine, such an abolition may not occur in our lifetimes but may occur thanks to changes in our society we push for today. The largest of which is to provide alternatives to incarceration and increase support provided to incarcerated people to help them live on the outside and inside. To push for strong scientific standards of evidence in courts so that rates of incarceration can be reduced. To push for better social services that actual support people instead of denying welfare and ripping families apart. To defund cops and push that money into school and libraries and better public transit. Ensure that there enough third spaces for people to socialize without spending money. To make today more equitable and to reduce economic damage and transition to a better future so we can prove that prisons aren’t needed.
You are aware that Star Trek is fiction, correct?
a funny thing about having conversations with people within institutions (academic in this case but also others) about gatekeeping, is that you end up having a conversation over and over in which you're like, "hey this alligator spike pit moat you have erected around your institution is keeping a lot of people out," and they're like, "well *I* navigated the alligator spike pit moat just fine," and you're like, "right. by dint of us having this conversation, you within the institution and me without, it is understood that you navigated the alligator spike pit moat. due to that being an inherent requirement of entering the institution," and they're like, "I don't think you understand the prestigious history of our alligator spike pit moat," and you're like, "is there a reason why there needs to be an alligator spike pit moat encircling the concept of higher education?" and they're like, "look, the alligator spike pit moat isn't for everyone. some people just aren't cut out for the alligator spike pit moat :)" and you're like, "right, yeah, like disabled people and people coming from poverty or unstable home environments or underserved communities or people dealing with difficult to navigate life events like pregnancy or abuse or prison or addiction or the death of a loved one, for example" and they're like, "how dare you imply that we are keeping those people out on purpose. it's their own problem if they can't wrestle the alligators and avoid the spikes while also disabled and/or poor and/or pregnant etc" and you're like, "well that seems evil," and they're like, "it sounds like maybe you're just bitter about the alligator spike pit moat because of your totally random individual experience with ONE bad alligator spike pit moat. have you considered therapy?" and you're like, "did you know that there's some patterns here in terms of how y'all are handling this stuff?" and they're like, "actually yes. we even have a department of alligator spike pit studies :)" and you're like, "that's great, how do I get access to and participate in those conversations?" and they're like, "well firstly you must cross the alligator spike pit moat"
if you can document that you have a medical condition that might make it challenging for you to navigate the alligator spike pit moat, they'll give you an extra 20 minutes to complete your navigation of the alligator spike pit moat
IMPORTANT: any injuries incurred as a result of navigating the alligator spike pit moat will be the sole responsibility of the injured parties. once you leave, the people who made you navigate the alligator spike pit moat and the institution that installed the alligator spike pit moat will never contact you again. except sometimes to ask you for more money.

Funny you say that.
Here, have this warehouse fire tracker. 120 as of posting this:

context: this website tracks industrial fires for any reason, not just class-based arson
context: warehouses also burn down regularly on account of having a lot of flammable materials and electronics. There was no measurable spike in the number of warehouse fires in April/May when the toilet paper story went viral and a very modest very recent increase is entirely consistent with a heat wave.
Even if one were to take the warehouse fire stories at face value, ndividual acts of anger and frustration do not a class consciousness create.

the problem millennials + older have with trying to understand the 67 meme is that they keep trying to compare it to past funny numbers.
listen. 67 is not 69. it's not 420, or 21, or 42.
it's E.
you remember this shit?
it's this. 67 is E.
