This is actually such a crucial part of healing from neglect and abuse and I have to add to this.
Because indeed, people who like you will not roll their eyes and sigh at the idea of accommodating your needs, they will value your voice and be upset with you about injustice done to you, not at you for "being difficult". They will be happy when you find a way to live a better life, and help you to get there. If you are struggling, someone who loves you wants to see you smile, not tell you to smile because "you have it so good".

the hayden/ilya beef is NOT reciprocal. it's not that they're catty with each other. ilya is like you won't eat mushrooms what are you four? and hayden straight up replies with like i don't think you're deserving of love.
This is going to be long. I find this take reductive, and I say this with Ilya as my favourite character. Ilya is deliberately antagonistic to Hayden during the dinner in a way that he knows will push Hayden over the edge because Ilya is sad he has to justify his love for Shane. The feelings are absolutely valid and fair, but his behaviour is not.
Hayden is reeling because literally one week earlier he found out that his best friend had kept this awful painful secret. Or felt that he needed to. This is crushing for Hayden, who wants to take care of Shane and be there for him. He's not only dealing with the news of Shane being gay, he's rewriting their entire friendship and the narrative of 'we hate Ilya Rozanov.' Emphasis on 'we.'
['Fun' fact: Hayden actually finds out that Ilya and Shane have been together in some way for almost a decade during the dinner! Shane hadn't told him that and so he is processing that hurt in real time and still manages to apologise.]
As for Shane. Shane tries multiple times to ask Ilya to cool it and stop "intentionally bothering Hayden." He also mentions at the door that Hayden "promised [he] wasn't going to be an asshole tonight" which indicates they had spoken about the goal of the dinner (to have them clear the air).
Comments Ilya makes before Hayden says anything:
"We should give you a tour. The master bathroom has a very good shower." He looked directly at Hayden and winked. "Big enough for two."
Ilya considered his options for where to sit. Shane and Jackie were occupying the two armchairs closest to the fireplace. Hayden was sitting at one end of the sofa that faced them. Ilya could sit at the other end of the sofa, but he chose the more obnoxious option of perching on the arm of Shane's chair. Instead of handing Shane his wine, Ilya draped his arm around Shane's shoulders and hovered the glass in front of his lips.
When Hayden asks what they were serving for dinner, Shane responds with "Coq au vin." Ilya then says, "That's French."
When the conversation turns to hockey, Ilya decides to "step up and be the hero" and change the subject. After a moment of silence, Shane says, "Well, we need to talk about something." This is where Ilya says, "We could talk about how Hayden is eating around the mushrooms like a five-year-old."
Then Hayden says: "We could talk about what the fuck Shane sees in you." Which I mean, after the above, is snarky but not completely baseless.
Next jab:
"We should cook together some time, Hayden."
"I suck at cooking."
"You suck at hockey," Ilya pointed out. "But you still play it."
Hayden looked pleadingly at Shane. "Seriously? This guy? I've got no problem with you being gay---"
"What a hero," Ilya said flatly.
Next:
"How are you liking Ottawa?"
"Fine," Ilya said. "Team sucks, but the city is not bad."
"I don't understand why you'd leave a contender like Boston to play for Ottawa," Hayden said.
"I am sure you don't understand a lot of things."
"Ilya," Shane said wearily.
'This dinner was important to Shane, and Ilya knew the purpose of this evening was to make Jackie, and especially Hayden, understand what Shane saw in him.'
The crux of the issue for Hayden:
"Do you have any idea of what it will do to him if this secret gets out?"
Ilya huffed. "Yes. I have thought about it a bit."
"I won't let you hurt him."
[Note: Hayden knows the Voyageurs/Metros. His and Shane's fears are confirmed as correct in TLG.]
Shane's frustration:
"I have been so fucking scared and alone for so goddamned long and tonight was supposed to be end some of that and you guys are acting like children. Fuck both of you."
Hayden communicates what's wrong and Ilya jabs him again:
"You could've told me, Shane."
"What?"
This time, Hayden's voice was stronger. "You could've told me. I hate that you kept it from me all this time. That you thought you needed to."
... "It hurts, y'know?"
... "I couldn't," Shane said finally. "We hadn't even told each other. It took us years to figure out how we felt about each other. For me to figure out that I'm gay. But once we sorted it all out, I wanted to tell you. And I did. Eventually."
"And," Ilya added, because he couldn't help himself, "you've taken it super well."
"I thought you hated him," Hayden said. "We talked about how much we hated him all the time. For years! And then I find out not only that you don't hate him, but you... I mean, you must love him so fucking much, right? Like, you'd have to, to go through all of this."
Hayden apologises to Shane and offers an olive branch to Ilya, Ilya does neither:
"I'm sorry," Hayden sounded like all the fight had left him. "I'm making this about me, and it's not. This dinner was a big deal for you, and I fucked it up."
"And," Hayden turned to Ilya, "if Shane loves you or whatever, then I guess you can't be such a bad guy."
"There are good things about me, I think."
-----
Again, Ilya is my favourite character. But he's not perfect. He is acting from a place of insecurity, here. And so is Hayden. They're all very uncomfortable but that's what Shane was trying to air so that they could communicate and move on as important people in his lives.
I think more people need to think about how it would feel to not know any of the internal POVs of these characters and then re-read this scene again. Because Ilya is given an extremely generous reading (unsurprisingly, it's an Ilya POV chapter...) and a lot of grace for his actions that is not extended in the same way to Shane or Hayden.
I am not an apologist for any character but it's so tiring to see such cherry-picking and reductive takes. People are human they have feelings, they have imperfect reactions, they act childishly, they make mistakes. I don't get the points system that's applied to Ilya over everyone else. Yes, we love him, yes, he's had a lot of trauma, but those are explanations not excuses. Shane did deserve better in this scene, or Ilya and/or Hayden should have said let's not do this just yet. Let's give it time to settle.
we need to bring back public hatred for paparazzi. Iâm so tired of actors defending themselves against assholes with cameras and being smeared as egotistical divas. theyâre glorified stalkers who get paid to harass people. end of. the things these freaks get away with would send normal people to prison but weâre supposed to think itâs okay just bc theyâre paparazzi. they SHOULD get shut down for being openly misogynistic. they SHOULD get told off and reported for following someone to their private residence to doxx them. they SHOULD face charges for just about running people over in their pursuit of the next hot celeb. this is not normal. and, actually, these people DO deserve to get punched sometimes.
I saw a post saying that Heated Rivalry is to blame for fandom breaking containment and I vehemently disagree. While certainly HR has a more vocal reach - thanks to TikTok - i think that the true erosion of social boundaries as a norm and not a taboo goes back to AT LEAST 2007ish.
Graham Norton showing actors fanart and fanfic to the actors involved - and these actors, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy, were LOVELY about it (despite GN trying to make it an "ewwww!!!" Thing). It even goes back further - it was shunned, but certainly Sherlock actors were shown fanfic and fanart about their characters AND the actors.
And this has been a widespread thing - but i would argue that the true erosion of boundaries in fandom is really to do with the easy access to celebrities that the aughts brought in. You had Pete Wentz blogging and making jokes about fanfic. You had Twitter giving you near 24/7 access to celebrities, and celebrity culture being what it is, people wanting to be noticed by these celebrities.
But certainly with the advent of TikTok AND Covid causing a variety of breakdowns in societal norms (sometimes for the benefit of folks and sometimes to the detriment), there has been an increase in the vocal minority being absolutely batshit. Unfortunately, they're very loud.
But just like in real life, there are a lack of "third spaces" online. You dont have easy little ways to explore being a weird little freak online that isnt just cracking your chest open on live.
Idk. Fandom evolves and sometimes it sucks. I don't know where I was going here, whoops.
Also, it cannot be stated enough that a big reason why the social consciousness changed, regard fanfic and other fandom, is because the very same fans started writing articles of their own.
For every article all "this is weird and wrong", there were at least one or two more going "fandom had existed for longer than many of us have been alive."
And i think that the general normalization from fans has entered social awareness in conjunction with social media giving unparalleled access into a celebrity's life, the 24-hour news cycle, and the general sense of entitlement to all point to fandom being how it is.

As someone who isn't a furry but has very much grown up around furry art I kinda forget that it's shocking to some people. It's kinda just what a bunch of queer art looks like. That anthro dragon girl might as well be my coworker, what's your fucking problem?
genuinely i think everyone would be so much happier if we simply accepted that fanfiction isnât supposed to be realistic at all, itâs just supposed to make you happy. âthese freaks are currently 20k words into pining for each other while living under the same roof and working the same job, fuck realism tbh
man sometimes friendship really is just "I saw this and knew it would give you psychic damage. please respond with agony" and then they do. and it's great

Anthropology major answer: âThere absolutely was such a time! Modern humans and our ancestors shared territory numerous times over prehistory with cousin species like homo neanderthalensis, homo floresiensis, and many, many others!âÂ
Folklore student answer: âAlso, almost all cultures have something like djinn, faeries, hulder, fox spirits, and other similar creatures who can appear at least human and are very, very dangerous to humans!âÂ
Both of these things are true, and may be connected both to the above and to each other. :D
Listen I hate this take on the uncanny valley so fucking much because many subpsecies of homonids lived in the same areas but some of them got along well enough to coexist and neandertals had enough desirable genetic traits to the point where human women (see here for a blanket on female vs male choosiness) would often pass up incel homosepian for the chad neandertal.
Genetics aside, various hominid species didnât start visually looking all that different until 50,000 years ago, while under the skin changes began as early as 89,000 years ago (ie the development of the Y chromosome but I might be oversimplifying at this point) Point being, even our non-human cousins didnât. look. that. different. from. us. Especially comparing the diversifying of humans themselves crossing trans continental as it was. And even then neandertals still had advantagious traits for living in the Eurasian hemisphere.
Also I digress, regardless of it being intentional, and with few perserved records from that chapter in our speciesâ history, I donât like the implication that the uncanny valley effect stems from humans being inherently racist (for lack of a word for hatred of non-human intelligences). I know that sounds off the wall but prejudice and sense of superiority by birthright is vastly different than othering by means of the sucess of social groups and the need to compete for territory or resources. Racism is entirely a Eurpean fabrication and itâs been proven time and time again to be a cultural outlier and purposfully designed to further the agenda of corroded theocratical religious divinity (here, here, here) and the financial benifits of the exploitation of colonism that otherwise has not been replicated by other cultures to the same degree. (this is the only example off the top of my head but Iâm know thereâs more.)
You know whatâs older than racism?
You know whatâs more flesh crawling than neandertals?
fucking rabies
You know what LOOKS like a human but doesnât ACT human ENOUGH? Do you know what might bite you and get you sick or turn you into something that also moves about in a non human way? Brain parasites that give you painful headaches and intensifies agression and confusion.
Say youâre a monkey and one member of your troop gets bitten by something. Later he starts twitching and swaying about. He keeps stumbling out of trees but barely feels anything when he hits the ground. He wonât eat sleep or drink. He makes guttural noises that keep alerting predators and heâs in obvious writhing agony. Suddenly heâs not your friend anymore. He doesnât recognize you and he attempts to bite and claw at anything that moves.
Up until preventitive oral medications and vaccines were developed in the 1970s there was NOTHING stopping rabies and it still prevails today and kills hundreds of thousands of people in third world countries with limited medical resources a year. Thereâs no cure for rabies once youve got it and the only reliable diagnostic is a brain autopsy.
Rabies. TB. Leoprosy. Syphilis. Meningitis. Toxoplasmosis. Anthrax. Mercury Poisoning. Prion disease. These are all bad and in different varying degrees can cause limps, sores, agression, confusion or dazed trances, ambled pacing, convulsions or uncharacteristic behavior in humans.
Basically everything that people are terrified of when it comes to zombies. Vampires bite. Werewolves rip people apart. Demonic possesion? Easy. Changlings take the place of your loved ones.
Also I donât think that itâs a conicidence that the things we find uncomfortable with the uncanny valley also just happen to line up with predatory behavior, smiling too wide or staring you down, blinking too slowly or moving towards you with a slow steady speed. Itâs just a danger signal to keep other monkeys in a troop from getting bitten by an infected monkey. Simple as that.
After all whatâs scarier? A dead body, or moving body that will MAKE you dead?
Iâm not going to be a hypocrite by pointing out racism being excused as a stemmed human behavior without claiming that the deep seated primal fear of disease doesnât make a good excuse for ableism as well. I mean we use othering to discern friend from foe, and then at some point decided that was a good enough excuse for racism. Theres legitimate proof that ancient homonids could and would be hospitible to the disabled out of compassion. The point of having these initial fears is to guage saftey measures first, but once someone or something is proven to be harmless that normally should be the end of it. I mean if an adult wild silverback gorrilla can look at a spycam and decide itâs chill after a moment of inspection then thereâs really no excuse for any of us.
Healthy othering =/= newly invented racism.
healthy fear of infectious diseases =/= excuse to hate disabled people.
But yeah rabies is more likely the reason for the uncanny valley effect thanks for coming to my goddamn ted talk.
Reblogging this version bc of sources and I personally think this makes for much more interesting (and terrifying) lore than any other post in this thread.
Mr. Collins would be such a fan of ai. He would love it. He would have it write scripts for him to use for complimenting people. He'd ask it what to do in social situations and then when someone would tell him "I think that's a bad idea" he'd be like "my dear madam it's so good of you to be concerned but I think the highly esteemed Grok knows a little more about this than a lady like yourself" and then he'd go humiliate himself publicly.
Sorry we really went from free the nipple, take back the night, slut walks, and ending gender/sex segregation in sports being fucking milquetoast feminism 101 concepts to fucking girl dinner and "I just worry about fairness if we let trans girls play against cis ones" and "it was right of that woman to call the cops on a black man for existing near here in public during the day time because men are all violent monsters" and "radical feminism isn't transphobic we just need to kill all men including trans ones those oppressive traitors" and I will legit never be able to be normal about it. What the FUCK happened. I'd say I wonder what the feminists of my youth would say about this but I'm one and lemme tell ya I want to throw up. Go fucking read bell hooks or do something else useful please because all of this learned helplessness, gender essentialism, and transphobia dressed up as feminism is actively holding us back.

Shane's head is resting on Ilya's pillowy chest in the king-sized bed at the cottage. She maintains that Ilya's boobs are ridiculously huge for an athlete who works out for hours every day. They feel like heaven in Shane's hands, plush and big compared to her own A cups.
Shane can't get hung up on Ilya's tits. They just had sex after all, and now that they've said they love each other two nights ago, they haven't been able to keep their hands off each other. They'll probably have sex in another hour or two, once Shane's clit stops tingling.
But right now, Shane has a question that has been nagging at her for monthsâyears, really.
"Why do you go by 'Ilya'?" Shane asks, her voice partly muffled by soft breast tissue.
Ilya laughs, and Shane feels the rumble. "It is my name, Shane."
Shane rolls her eyes, sitting up. She doesn't want to leave the warmth of Ilya's chest, but she can't focus in these conditions.
"I know it's your name, asshole. But it's also not, like, your given name."
"Ah, you remember it, huh? I've tried to make the world forget."
"Tseâ"
"Tsetsilya," Ilya finishes.
Shane nods and settles against the headboard. Ilya shuffles up and their shoulders press together.
After a long beat of silence, Ilya sighs. "I do not like my name."
"Like, it just doesn't feel like you?"
Ilya runs her hand through her short curls. "It is too feminine. Girly. My father always insisted on calling me my full name. Very unusual in Russia, but I think he wanted to remind me every time we spoke that I am a woman, not the son he wanted."
Shane finds Ilya's hand and interlaces their fingers. "That's awful."
"My Mama called me 'Tsilya' when I was little, and then just 'Ilya' when I got older. Even 'Ilyusha', sometimes. 'Ilya' is usually name for boys, but Mama didn't care."
Ilya told her about her Mama's suicide last night, and Shane's heart is still aching. "Ilyusha," Shane tries. "That's beautiful."
"Ah, that is," Ilya shakes her head and actually blushes, "almost too much. Wow." After a moment, she switches the focus to Shane. "Your name is also usually for boys, yes?"
"Yeah, usually. I got teased for it a bit in school by the girls, but in hockey, when I had to play on the boy's teams, I think it made them take me more seriously. Like once I had my uniform on they could pretend I wasn't a girl at all. It certainly made it easier to avoid having to have a boyfriend," Shane jokes. "And anyway, I've always liked my name."
Ilya squeezes her hand, catching Shane's eye. "I like it, too. And no more boyfriends. Just me and you, Hollander."
"Me and you, Rozanova" Shane confirms grin spreading across her face
With all that cleared up, Shane is free to turn her attention back to Ilya's magnificent tits.
