There are a lot of names that would prompt a Lya-lya or Lyu-lya nickname though (it wouldn't be Lily,, but I can see her getting to it as an english-efied version of a common nickname)

Olga, Ala, Larisa, Yelena, Svetlana (funnily enough)... basically any name that has an "L" in it

Also what's with the Rozanova? I don't think it's a thing to add an "ah" sound at the end of surnames for women? Maybe it's like to differentiate the fem version? Idk

Canada's Jane Hollander, three-time figure skating World Champion, is starting the season as the Sochi Olympics champion hopeful.

Russia's Liliya Rozanova, the once record-breaking young phenom, is re-entering the fray after a short-lived retirement.

They were bitter rivals in their debut year in senior competitions, but Jane has not seen Rozanova in years. She hasn't touched Liliya in years.

And now Liliya Rozanova is in her living room.

Jane's phone buzzes as she leaves her waxing appointment. It's not her favorite thing, but she goes to the salon during the season and before awards shows, because she has to dress up. People are weird online and the photos are so high-res these days. Besides, she kind of enjoys the pain, in a weird way. It's like a challenge. And it's less annoying than shaving.

Luke: what are you wearing to the thing

Jane snorts. The awards show is a week away. Her mom probably has five different outfits picked for her to choose from, but this kind of thing has never been interesting to Jane. She'll wear her favorite thing from the options she's given, which will probably all be brands she has partnerships with. She's grateful that she has these options, thanks to her mom, but most of the brands Jane works with aren't really her style. She's never had the nerve to tell her mom she'd rather work with someone who does women's suits instead of dresses. And she shouldn't be texting Luke at all, given that "Luke" is really Liliya Rozanova, her rival since their international matches back in Juniors, but she's never had the nerve to say that either.

She texts back I don't know. One of these days she's going to delete the whole thread. She swears. Maybe tomorrow. Although it would probably be more convincing if she hadn't been saying this to herself for years.

Luke: how far up are you shaving Jane: I'm not

Liliya sends a question mark. Jane smirks to herself. They both know the league has certain expectations when it comes to personal grooming, even if no one would ever say them out loud. Players have to be feminine and pretty off the ice and out of uniform to prove that sports hasn't ruined them as women. The league is still young enough that players' attractiveness is an important part of how they market, trying to attract a wider audience, which Jane understands means "men who like to spend money on sports". So here Jane is, getting waxed, because she's not brave enough to be the only one wearing pants to an award show, especially since she's already one of the only Asians in the room. Jane sends back a photo of the salon sign.

Luke: please tell me you didn't wax everything ;) Jane: I'm not sending pics of that

Liliya sends a single-tear emoji. Jane hesitates, then she types Guess you'll have to wait and see and sends it before she can think better of it. Liliya sends back a grinning devil emoji.
